The years 1945–1953 in Wrocław were a time of reconstruction of the city and creating an entirely new community, its cultural, educational and scientific life. One of the many problems of everyday life for new residents was a lack of printed texts in Polish. Beside creation of libraries and lending libraries, a startup of publishing movement was very important. It was started by about 50 institutions – professional publishing houses, bookshops, but also societies, educational institutions, offices, political parties, and finally the authors themselves or their families. The most important role among them was played by private institutions.Lata 1945–1953 we Wrocławiu to czas odbudowy miasta i tworzenia zupełnie nowej społeczności, jej życia kulturalnego, oświatowego i naukowego.

    Soft ranking in clustering

Due to the diffusion of large-dimensional data sets (e.g., in DNA microarray or document organization and retrieval applications), there is a growing interest in clustering methods based on a proximity matrix. These have the advantage of being based on a data structure whose size only depends on cardinality, not dimensionality. In this paper, we propose a clustering technique based on fuzzy ranks. The use of ranks helps to overcome several issues of large-dimensional data sets, whereas the fuzzy formulation is useful in encoding the information contained in the smallest entries of the proximity matrix. Comparative experiments are presented, using several standard hierarchical clustering techniques as a reference

Supervised Classification: Quite a Brief Overview

The original problem of supervised classification considers the task of automatically assigning objects to their respective classes on the basis of numerical measurements derived from these objects. Classifiers are the tools that implement the actual functional mapping from these measurements---also called features or inputs---to the so-called class label---or output. The fields of pattern recognition and machine learning study ways of constructing such classifiers. The main idea behind supervised methods is that of learning from examples: given a number of example input-output relations, to what extent can the general mapping be learned that takes any new and unseen feature vector to its correct class? This chapter provides a basic introduction to the underlying ideas of how to come to a supervised classification problem. In addition, it provides an overview of some specific classification techniques, delves into the issues of object representation and classifier evaluation, and (very) briefly covers some variations on the basic supervised classification task that may also be of interest to the practitioner

Instance selection of linear complexity for big data

Over recent decades, database sizes have grown considerably. Larger sizes present new challenges, because machine learning algorithms are not prepared to process such large volumes of information. Instance selection methods can alleviate this problem when the size of the data set is medium to large. However, even these methods face similar problems with very large-to-massive data sets. In this paper, two new algorithms with linear complexity for instance selection purposes are presented. Both algorithms use locality-sensitive hashing to find similarities between instances. While the complexity of conventional methods (usually quadratic, O(n2), or log-linear, O(nlogn)) means that they are unable to process large-sized data sets, the new proposal shows competitive results in terms of accuracy. Even more remarkably, it shortens execution time, as the proposal manages to reduce complexity and make it linear with respect to the data set size. The new proposal has been compared with some of the best known instance selection methods for testing and has also been evaluated on large data sets (up to a million instances).Supported by the Research Projects TIN 2011-24046 and TIN 2015-67534-P from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness

Julius Zeyer’s “Rokoko” in Maryla Wolska’s Translation: The Strategies of Writer’s Artistic Self-creation in the Light of a Text Selected for Translation

    No full text
This article investigates the Polish translation of Julius Zeyer’s Rokoko (“Rococo”) published in 1910 by MarylaWolska in Lamus (“Lamus”) (Lviv 1908−1913), a journal she co-edited. This is the attempt to indicate the relationship between the writer’s translation choices and her artistic self-creation on the Lviv literary map, and to this end the author briefly describes Wolska’s contacts with the city’s cultural milieu in the wake of the disintegration of her artistic group “Płanetnicy” (The Rainmakers). Also, the author examines the transformations of Wolska’s literary craftsmanship and her approach to her role as a translator. Considering these themes will allow to inquire into the rationale behind Wolska’s choice to translate this particular literary work: Zeyer’s Rokoko

The impact of retinal size on mental transformations in imagery: Rotation, synthesis, combination

    No full text
The following paper is an answer to a research question regarding the impact of retinal size (understood as the tangent of the object’s physical size and its distance from the subject) on mental transformations. A total of 182 people took part in three designed experiments, which included three types of operations: 1) synthesis as an operation changing the structure of the object; 2) rotation as an operation preserving the structure of the object; and 3) a combination of the two. The impact of retinal size on the course of rotation was confirmed. Furthermore, it turned out that this impact significantly influenced the effectiveness of all three mental operations. A tendency regarding the impact of physical size on synthesis was demonstrated (participants performed mental transformations in the most optimal way on 15 cm (5.9 in) objects – such that can be held in a hand in the real world). It was noticeable that the optimal distance to the object, preferred by participants, was 30 cm (11.8 in). In the real world, such a distance enables them to transform objects freely within arm’s reach. The obtained results support the analogousness of the mental world to the world in which we live

THE OBITUARIES OF KORNEL UJEJSKI CONSIDERED IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CHANGING FORM OF POLISH JOURNAL OBITUARY AT THE TURN OF THE 19TH AND 20TH CENTURIES. A CONTRIBUTION TO STUDIES

    No full text
This article discusses ways of constructing the 19th century Polish journal obituary through a selection of obituaries of Kornel Ujejski from the years 1897-1898. One of the most important aspects of this analysis is the relationship between the conventional and the particular in the sections of these obituaries which consider the reception of Ujejski’s works. The author also considers the problem of the connections between the socially determined poetics of the obituary, the history of literature and literary criticism, which acquires particular importance in the context of obituaries of writers and also in the spe-cific form of 19th century obituary known as “literary obituary”. This paper shows how the obituary is a particularly useful genre in the research of literary reception
