The aim of this paper is to explain Aristotle’s views on education with specific reference to Intellectual and Character education. Aristotle asserts that the theory and practice of education in general must undoubtedly be build upon a solid foundation of a philosophy of life especially in the fields of ethics and politics. His original works of Nicomachean Ethics, Politics and Metaphysics were also consulted in this regard. The educational implications of his teachings on actuality, potentiality, causality and character formation are also discussed. Though Aristotle had the background of Athenian education in mind, yet his philosophical thoughts is of universal significance and are not restricted to any time or place.Criminology and Security Scienc

Articulated Clinician Detection Using 3D Pictorial Structures on RGB-D Data

Reliable human pose estimation (HPE) is essential to many clinical applications, such as surgical workflow analysis, radiation safety monitoring and human-robot cooperation. Proposed methods for the operating room (OR) rely either on foreground estimation using a multi-camera system, which is a challenge in real ORs due to color similarities and frequent illumination changes, or on wearable sensors or markers, which are invasive and therefore difficult to introduce in the room. Instead, we propose a novel approach based on Pictorial Structures (PS) and on RGB-D data, which can be easily deployed in real ORs. We extend the PS framework in two ways. First, we build robust and discriminative part detectors using both color and depth images. We also present a novel descriptor for depth images, called histogram of depth differences (HDD). Second, we extend PS to 3D by proposing 3D pairwise constraints and a new method that makes exact inference tractable. Our approach is evaluated for pose estimation and clinician detection on a challenging RGB-D dataset recorded in a busy operating room during live surgeries. We conduct series of experiments to study the different part detectors in conjunction with the various 2D or 3D pairwise constraints. Our comparisons demonstrate that 3D PS with RGB-D part detectors significantly improves the results in a visually challenging operating environment.Comment: The supplementary video is available at https://youtu.be/iabbGSqRSg

Objective: To analyze clinical and demographic data of childhood-onset (12 years and younger) schizophrenia patients collected for a genetic study in schizophrenia, undertaken nationally in South Africa, using multiple parameters. Method: Patients with an onset of schizophrenia at 12 years or younger, were included. From the Diagnostic Interview for Genetic Studies (DIGS), patients’ information and summary report data was tabulated and analyzed. Specific subgroups were further compared. This sub-population of 12 subjects was further compared with a group of the adult sample. Results: Of the 12 patients recruited, prominent resultswere: male to female ratio of 1:1; all had insidious onset of psychosis; a third had all 3 multidimensional impairment (MDI) symptoms; all patients that received ADHD treatment had ADHD treatment failure; two thirds had milestone delay; 58% had birth complications; a third were predominantly bottle fed; 42% had family history of schizophrenia; a third had family history of other major psychiatric conditions; all patients had at least one non-psychotic deviant behaviour (NPDB); no patient used cannabis; alldelusions were paranoid; 92% had school achievement difficulty and a third had treatment resistance. Gender comparison included: earlier onset of psychosis in females; all females had aggression versus a third of males; more females had school achievement difficulty than males; males had more treatment resistance. Patients with MDI, compared to the sample average had: earlier onset of non-psychotic deviant behaviour; lower school drop-out rate; less social difficulty and no treatment resistance. Conclusion: The results compare well to previous research on this topic. The new concepts introduced by the present studyrequire further investigation

DynaMoN: Motion-Aware Fast And Robust Camera Localization for Dynamic NeRF

Dynamic reconstruction with neural radiance fields (NeRF) requires accurate camera poses. These are often hard to retrieve with existing structure-from-motion (SfM) pipelines as both camera and scene content can change. We propose DynaMoN that leverages simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) jointly with motion masking to handle dynamic scene content. Our robust SLAM-based tracking module significantly accelerates the training process of the dynamic NeRF while improving the quality of synthesized views at the same time. Extensive experimental validation on TUM RGB-D, BONN RGB-D Dynamic and the DyCheck's iPhone dataset, three real-world datasets, shows the advantages of DynaMoN both for camera pose estimation and novel view synthesis.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Applications of Wine Pomace in the Food Industry: Approaches and Functions

    Get PDF
Winemaking generates large amounts ofwine pomace, also called grape pomace. This by-product has attracted the attention of food scientists and the food industry, due to its high content in nutrients and bioactive compounds. This review mainly focuses on the different published approaches to the use of wine pomace and its functions in the food industry. Traditionally, wine pomace has been used to obtain wine alcohol, food colorings, and grape seed oil. More recently, research has focused in the production of other value-added products, such as extracts of bioactive compounds, mainly phenols, recovery of tartaric acid, and the making of flours. The most common functions associated with wine pomace products are their use as antioxidants, followed by their use as fortifying, coloring, and antimicrobial agents. These products have mainly been applied to the preparation of meat and fish products and to, a lesser extent, cereal products.Autonomous Government of Castilla y León, Spain, through the research project BU282U13

A criminological analysis of male observation cases

Afrikaans textThe purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze a group of observation cases referred to a psychiatric institution through the criminal justice system by means of certain measuring instruments in order to determine on which grounds some of the cases were classified as criminals and others as state patients. The sample for the purposes of this investigation consisted of one hundred and forty-two cases referred to the Weskoppies hospital for psychiatric observation during 1988 to 1994. The measuring instruments were the South African Wechsler intelligence scale, the Rorschach projective technique and an information schedule which was used for the purpose of gathering biographical information and personal details of each particular case. The data collected through these instruments was statistically analyzed utilising frequencies and crosstabulations, chi-square tests, t-tests, correspondence analyses, factor analyses and regression analyses. The findings of this investigation revealed that crimes concerning personal relations and property crimes were more committed by criminals than state patients while crimes concerning communal life were encountered more amongst state patients than criminals. Non-person-directed crimes of violence were encountered proportionally more amongst state patients who had a history of substance abuse than in criminals with a similar history. State patients who had a history of substance abuse were proportionally more prosecuted on account of person-directed-crimes of violence than criminals with a similar history. The predictive measuring instrument developed by means of regression analysis indicated as important predictors three subtests of the South African Wechsler intelligence scale namely general information, digit-symbol substitution and picture arrangement as well as the variable "previous psychiatric treatment". The following recommendations were also made: The current endeavour to adapt the South African Wechsler intelligence scale for all population groups needs to be maintained and this adaptation should also be pursued in each country where the scale is used or was used in the past. It is advisable to draw up certain profiles of specific offenders by means of the Rorschach projective technique while the testing procedure should preferably be undertaken by the same researcher. Provision should be made that the accused be declared as state patients only on account of serious and violent crimes while the courts should have the right in appropriate cases to charge the accused with detention in accordance with chapter three of the Mental Health Act. The testimony of criminologists and psychologists should be added to the testimony of psychiatrists especially in cases of accountability or diminished accountability. The proposed predictive model may be further refined and adapted through the use of a larger, nation-wide sample resulting in the inclusion of a greater number of observation cases and variables. Due to the accelerating rate of revision associated with The DSM IV manual and the fact that its validity is questioned, ethically responsible psychiatrists, psychologists and criminologists are obligated to identify practices and procedures which threaten to misinform the legal system. Criminology and Security StudiesD.Litt. et Phil. The following master thesis investigates the interest of the German scholars and intellectuals for Greece, within the German-Greek relations of the 19th century. It focuses on the Greek folklore both as it appears and as it gets examined in the works of the Germans Bernhard Schmidt and Theodor Kind. Under the influence of Philhellenism, the German understanding of the Greeks was based on an idealized image that had its roots in the antiquity and the ancient Greek culture. The German interest in Greek folklore, which manifested itself among others in the field of Archaeology, aimed for the detection of tangible evidence for the ancient Greek origins of the modern Greeks and by extension for confirmation of this idealized image which they had created for them. Ancient Greece became an object of instrumentalisation. At the same time, it developed into an inextricable part of the modern Greek state since the beginning of its foundation and dominated in the conscience and the self-definition of the Greeks. The ancient Greek antiquity's function as a model was not however limited to the area of Greece. Instead, the ancient Greek history and the fate of the Greek city-states were viewed either as a good or a bad example by the Germans in their efforts for national unification during the 19th century
