    Physical Exercise Introduced After Weaning Enhances Pancreatic Islet Responsiveness To Glucose And Potentiating Agents In Adult Msg-obese Rats

    Physical exercise represents an alternative way to prevent and/or ameliorate chronic metabolic diseases. Disruption of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity contributes to adiposity in obese subjects. Here, we verified the preventive effect of swimming training upon adiposity, adrenal catecholamine storage, and pancreatic islet function in obese monosodium glutamate (MSG)-treated rats. Male neonatal Wistar rats received MSG (4 mg/g body weight) during the first 5 days of life and, at weaning, half of the rats were submitted to swimming training, 30 min/day, 3 days a week, until 90 days of age (exercised rats: MSGex). Half of the rats were used as controls (sedentary group, MSGsd). Exercise training (ET) decreased insulinemia and fat deposition in MSGex, and increased adrenal catecholamine content, compared with MSGsd rats. Insulinemia during the ivGTT was lower in MSGex rats, despite a lack of difference in glycemia. Swimming training enhanced insulin release in islets challenged by 2.8-8.3 mmol/l glucose, whereas, at supraphysiological glucose concentrations (11.1-16.7 mmol/l), MSGex islets secreted less insulin than MSGsd. No differences in insulin secretion were observed following l-arginine (Arg) or K+ stimuli. In contrast, islets from MSGex rats secreted more insulin when exposed to carbachol (100 μmol/l), forskolin (10 μmol/l), or IBMX (1 mmol/l) at 8.3 mmol/l glucose. Additionally, MSGex islets presented a better epinephrine inhibition upon insulin release. These results demonstrate that ET prevented the onset of obesity in MSG rats, probably by enhancing adrenal catecholamine levels.     Herschel and Hubble study of a lensed massive dusty dtarbursting galaxy at z ∼ 3

    We present the results of combined deep Keck/NIRC2, HST/WFC3 near-infrared, and Herschel far-infrared observations of an extremely star-forming dusty lensed galaxy identified from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS J133542.9+300401). The galaxy is gravitationally lensed by a massive WISE-identified galaxy cluster at z ~ 1. The lensed galaxy is spectroscopically confirmed at z = 2.685 from detection of CO(10)\mathrm{CO}\,(1\to 0) by GBT and from detection of CO(32)\mathrm{CO}\,(3\to 2) obtained with CARMA. We use the combined spectroscopic and imaging observations to construct a detailed model of the background dusty lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG), which allows us to study the source plane properties of the target. The best-fit lens model provides magnifications of μ star = 2.10 ± 0.11 and μ dust = 2.02 ± 0.06 for the stellar and dust components, respectively. Multiband data yield a magnification-corrected star formation rate of 1900(±200) M ⊙ yr−1 and a stellar mass of 6.82.7+0.9×1011M{6.8}_{-2.7}^{+0.9}\times {10}^{11}\,{M}_{\odot }, consistent with a main sequence of star formation at z ~ 2.6. The CO observations yield a molecular gas mass of 8.3(±1.0) × 1010 M ⊙, similar to the most massive star-forming galaxies, which together with the high star formation efficiency, are responsible for the intense observed star formation rates. The lensed SMG has a very short gas depletion timescale of ~40 Myr. The high stellar mass and small gas fractions observed indicate that the lensed SMG likely has already formed most of its stellar mass and could be a progenitor of the most massive elliptical galaxies found in the local universe

    Blind Detections of CO J = 1-0 in 11 H-ATLAS Galaxies at z = 2.1-3.5 with the GBT/Zpectrometer

    We report measurements of the carbon monoxide ground state rotational transition (12C16O J = 1--0) with the Zpectrometer ultra-wideband spectrometer on the 100-m diameter Green Bank Telescope. The sample comprises 11 galaxies with redshifts between z = 2.1 and 3.5 from a total sample of 24 targets identified by Herschel-ATLAS photometric colors from the SPIRE instrument. Nine of the CO measurements are new redshift determinations, substantially adding to the number of detections of galaxies with rest-frame peak submillimeter emission near 100um. The CO detections confirm the existence of massive gas reservoirs within these luminous dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). The CO redshift distribution of the 350um-selected galaxies is strikingly similar to the optical redshifts of 850um-selected submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in 2.1 < z < 3.5. Spectroscopic redshifts break a temperature-redshift degeneracy; optically thin dust models fit to the far-infrared photometry indicate characteristic dust temperatures near 34 K for most of the galaxies we detect in CO. Detections of two warmer galaxies and statistically significant nondetections hint at warmer or molecule-poor DSFGs with redshifts difficult determine from from Herschel-SPIRE photometric colors alone. Many of the galaxies identified by H-ATLAS photometry are expected to be amplified by foreground gravitational lenses. Analysis of CO linewidths and luminosities provides a method for finding approximate gravitational lens magnifications mu from spectroscopic data alone, yielding mu ~ 3--20. Corrected for magnification, most galaxy luminosities are consistent with an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) classification, but three are candidate hyper-LIRGs with luminosities greater than 10^13 L_sun.Comment: ApJ, accepted. 15 pages, 7 figures, 3 table

    Green Bank Telescope Zpectrometer CO(1-0) Observations of the Strongly Lensed Submillimeter Galaxies from the Herschel ATLAS

    The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) has uncovered a population of strongly-lensed submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). The Zpectrometer instrument on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) was used to measure the redshifts and constrain the masses of the cold molecular gas reservoirs for two candidate high-redshift lensed sources. We derive CO(1-0) redshifts of z=3.042+/-0.001 and z=2.625+/-0.001, and measure molecular gas masses of (1--3)x10^{10}Msun, corrected for lens amplification and assuming a conversion factor of alhpa=0.8 Msun(K km/s pc^2)^{-1}. We find typical L(IR)/L'(CO) ratios of 120+/-40 and 140+/-50 Lsun (K km/s pc^2)^{-1}, which are consistent with those found for local ULIRGs and other high-redshift SMGs. From analysis of published data, we find no evidence for enhanced L(IR)/L'(CO(1-0)) ratios for the SMG population in comparison to local ULIRGs.     A Comprehensive View of a Strongly Lensed Planck-Associated Submillimeter Galaxy

    We present high-resolution maps of stars, dust, and molecular gas in a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z = 3.259. HATLAS12--00 is selected from the Herschel-Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) as a strong lens candidate mainly based on its unusually high 500um flux density (~300 mJy). It is the only high-redshift Planck detection in the 130 deg^2 H-ATLAS Phase 1 area. Keck Adaptive Optics images reveal a quadruply imaged galaxy in the K-band while the Submillimeter Array and the Extended Very Large Array show doubly imaged 880um and CO(1-0) sources, indicating differentiated distributions of the various components in the galaxy. In the source plane, the stars reside in three major kpc-scale clumps extended over ~1.6 kpc, the dust in a compact (~1 kpc) region ~3 kpc north of the stars, and the cold molecular gas in an extended (~7 kpc) disk ~5 kpc northeast of the stars. The emission from the stars, dust, and gas are magnified by ~17, 8, and 7 times, respectively, by four lensing galaxies at z ~ 1. Intrinsically, the lensed galaxy is a warm (T_dust ~ 40-65 K), hyper-luminous (L_IR ~ 1.7e13 Lsun; SFR ~ 2000 Msun/yr), gas-rich (M_gas/M_baryon ~ 70%), young (M_stellar/SFR ~ 20 Myr), and short-lived (M_gas/SFR ~ 40 Myr) starburst, without a significant active galactic nucleus.     Herschel-ATLAS : a binary HyLIRG pinpointing a cluster of starbursting protoellipticals

    Panchromatic observations of the best candidate hyperluminous infrared galaxies from the widest Herschel extragalactic imaging survey have led to the discovery of at least four intrinsically luminous z = 2.41 galaxies across an ≈100 kpc region—a cluster of starbursting protoellipticals. Via subarcsecond interferometric imaging we have measured accurate gas and star formation surface densities. The two brightest galaxies span ~3 kpc FWHM in submillimeter/radio continuum and CO J = 4-3, and double that in CO J = 1-0. The broad CO line is due partly to the multitude of constituent galaxies and partly to large rotational velocities in two counter-rotating gas disks—a scenario predicted to lead to the most intense starbursts, which will therefore come in pairs. The disks have M dyn of several × 1011 M ☉, and gas fractions of ~40%. Velocity dispersions are modest so the disks are unstable, potentially on scales commensurate with their radii: these galaxies are undergoing extreme bursts of star formation, not confined to their nuclei, at close to the Eddington limit. Their specific star formation rates place them >~ 5 × above the main sequence, which supposedly comprises large gas disks like these. Their high star formation efficiencies are difficult to reconcile with a simple volumetric star formation law. N-body and dark matter simulations suggest that this system is the progenitor of a B(inary)-type ≈1014.6-M ☉ cluster
