TRANSACTION COSTS: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH INVESTMENT AND FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT
As stated by the New Institutional Economics theory, transaction costs play a relevant role in economics and, according to the extent of such costs, agents make investment decisions. Actually,transaction costs may represent a disincentive to entrepreneurship.This work aims to verify whether transaction costs are related to investment rate and foreign direct investment rate (FDI) in different business environments. The results suggest that foreign investors do not have precise information about other countries as domestic investors do; as it is observed, only the relation between ransaction costs and investment rate is significant. The Nature of Optical Features in the Inner Region of the 3C48 Host Galaxy
The well-known quasar 3C48 is the most powerful compact steep-spectrum
radio-loud QSO at low redshifts. It also has two unusual optical features
within the radius of the radio jet (~1"): (1) an anomalous, high-velocity
narrow-line component, having several times as much flux as does the
narrow-line component coinciding with the broad-line redshift; and (2) a bright
continuum peak (3C48A) ~1" northeast of the quasar. Both of these optical
features have been conjectured to be related to the radio jet. Here we explore
these suggestions. We have obtained Gemini North GMOS integral-field-unit (IFU)
spectroscopy of the central region around 3C48. We use the unique features of
the IFU data to remove unresolved emission at the position of the quasar. The
resolved emission at the wavelength of the high-velocity component is peaked
<~0.25" north of the quasar, at virtually the same position angle as the base
of the radio jet. These observations appear to confirm that this high-velocity
gas is connected with the radio jet. However, most of the emission comes from a
region where the jet is still well collimated, rather than from the regions
where the radio maps indicate strong interaction with an external medium. We
also present the results of HST STIS spectroscopy of 3C48A. We show that 3C48A
is dominated by stars with a luminosity-weighted age of ~1.4 X 10^8 years,
substantially older than any reasonable estimate for the age of the radio
source. Our IFU data indicate a similar age. Thus, 3C48A almost certainly
cannot be attributed to jet-induced star formation. The host galaxy of 3C48 is
clearly the result of a merger, and 3C48A seems much more likely to be the
distorted nucleus of the merging partner, in which star formation was induced

Phylogenetic relationships of African green snakes (genera Philothamnus and Hapsidophrys) from São Tomé, Príncipe and Annobon islands based on mtDNA sequences, and comments on their colonization and taxonomy
Mitochondrial sequences (16S rRNA and cytochrome b) of the colubrine snake genera Philothamnus and Hapsidophrys
were analysed. Samples were obtained from three volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea. The main objective was to infer
phylogenetic relationships between the taxa and to trace back the colonization patterns of the group. Both insular species,
Philothamnus girardi and Philothamnus thomensis, form a monophyletic unit indicating a single colonization event of
one island (probably São Tomé) followed by dispersal to Annobon. Genetic divergence was found to be relatively low
when compared with other Philothamnus species from the African mainland, but sufficient to consider the two taxa as
distinct sister species. Here we also present evidence on the distinct phylogenetic position of Hapsidophrys sp. from
the island of Príncipe, which should be considered as a distinct species, Hapsidophrys principis, a sister taxon of H.

SOFIA/FORCAST and Spitzer/IRAC Imaging of the Ultra Compact H II Region W3(OH) and Associated Protostars in W3
We present infrared observations of the ultra-compact H II region W3(OH) made
by the FORCAST instrument aboard SOFIA and by Spitzer/IRAC. We contribute new
wavelength data to the spectral energy distribution, which constrains the
optical depth, grain size distribution, and temperature gradient of the dusty
shell surrounding the H II region. We model the dust component as a spherical
shell containing an inner cavity with radius ~ 600 AU, irradiated by a central
star of type O9 and temperature ~ 31,000 K. The total luminosity of this system
is 71,000 L_solar. An observed excess of 2.2 - 4.5 microns emission in the SED
can be explained by our viewing a cavity opening or clumpiness in the shell
structure whereby radiation from the warm interior of the shell can escape. We
claim to detect the nearby water maser source W3 (H2O) at 31.4 and 37.1 microns
using beam deconvolution of the FORCAST images. We constrain the flux densities
of this object at 19.7 - 37.1 microns. Additionally, we present in situ
observations of four young stellar and protostellar objects in the SOFIA field,
presumably associated with the W3 molecular cloud. Results from the model SED
fitting tool of Robitaille et al. (2006, 2007} suggest that two objects (2MASS
J02270352+6152357 and 2MASS J02270824+6152281) are intermediate-luminosity (~
236 - 432 L_solar) protostars; one object (2MASS J02270887+6152344) is either a
high-mass protostar with luminosity 3000 L_solar or a less massive young star
with a substantial circumstellar disk but depleted envelope; and one object
(2MASS J02270743+6152281) is an intermediate-luminosity (~ 768 L_solar)
protostar nearing the end of its envelope accretion phase or a young star

Evaluation of novel data-driven metrics of amyloid β deposition for longitudinal PET studies
PURPOSE: Positron emission tomography (PET) provides in vivo quantification of amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology. Established methods for assessing Aβ burden can be affected by physiological and technical factors. Novel, data-driven metrics have been developed to account for these sources of variability. We aimed to evaluate the performance of four data-driven amyloid PET metrics against conventional techniques, using a common set of criteria. METHODS: Three cohorts were used for evaluation: Insight 46 (N=464, [18F]florbetapir), AIBL (N=277, [18F]flutemetamol), and an independent test-retest data (N=10, [18F]flutemetamol). Established metrics of amyloid tracer uptake included the Centiloid (CL) and where dynamic data was available, the non-displaceable binding potential (BPND). The four data driven metrics computed were the amyloid load (Aβ load), the Aβ PET pathology accumulation index (Aβ index), the Centiloid derived from non-negative matrix factorisation (CLNMF), and the amyloid pattern similarity score (AMPSS). These metrics were evaluated using reliability and repeatability in test-retest data, associations with BPND and CL, and sample size estimates to detect a 25% slowing in Aβ accumulation. RESULTS: All metrics showed good reliability. Aβ load, Aβ index and CLNMF were strong associated with the BPND. The associations with CL suggests that cross-sectional measures of CLNMF, Aβ index and Aβ load are robust across studies. Sample size estimates for secondary prevention trial scenarios were the lowest for CLNMF and Aβ load compared to the CL. CONCLUSION: Among the novel data-driven metrics evaluated, the Aβ load, the Aβ index and the CLNMF can provide comparable performance to more established quantification methods of Aβ PET tracer uptake. The CLNMF and Aβ load could offer a more precise alternative to CL, although further studies in larger cohorts should be conducted
Ellagic Acid: A Review on Its Natural Sources, Chemical Stability, and Therapeutic Potential
Ellagic acid (EA) is a bioactive polyphenolic compound naturally occurring as secondary metabolite in many plant taxa. EA content is considerable in pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) and in wood and bark of some tree species. Structurally, EA is a dilactone of hexahydroxydiphenic acid (HHDP), a dimeric gallic acid derivative, produced mainly by hydrolysis of ellagitannins, a widely distributed group of secondary metabolites. EA is attracting attention due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and antiproliferative properties. EA displayed pharmacological effects in various in vitro and in vivo model systems. Furthermore, EA has also been well documented for its antiallergic, antiatherosclerotic, cardioprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective properties. This review reports on the health-promoting effects of EA, along with possible mechanisms of its action in maintaining the health status, by summarizing the literature related to the therapeutic potential of this polyphenolic in the treatment of several human diseases
The occurrence of antimicrobial residues and antimicrobial resistance genes in urban drinking water and sewage in Southern Brazil
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently discussed as an important issue worldwide, and the presence of antimicrobial residues (ARs) and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment, especially in the water sources, is a challenge for public health. This study was conducted to evaluate the occurrence and diversity of AR and ARG in water sources from an urban center, in Southern Brazil. A total of thirty-two water samples from drinking water treatment plants (24) and sewage systems (8) were collected during two annual samplings, winter and summer. The PCR was performed by 18 ARGs, and the detection of 47 ARs was performed by LC–MS/MS. All sewage samples presented carbapenemases, ESBL, and mcr-1 genes as well as quinolones and sulfamethoxazole residues. In drinking water, we just detected blaTEM and tetB genes and doxycycline residues in samples before treatment. This study provides data about AR and ARG in drinking water and sewage systems showing that these sources are important reservoirs of both. The limited effectiveness of wastewater treatment processes to remove mainly AR demonstrates the need to implement better protocols of disinfection, in order to limit the spread of AMR in the environment

Nitric Oxide: Perspectives and Emerging Studies of a Well Known Cytotoxin
The free radical nitric oxide (NO•) is known to play a dual role in human physiology and pathophysiology. At low levels, NO• can protect cells; however, at higher levels, NO• is a known cytotoxin, having been implicated in tumor angiogenesis and progression. While the majority of research devoted to understanding the role of NO• in cancer has to date been tissue-specific, we herein review underlying commonalities of NO• which may well exist among tumors arising from a variety of different sites. We also discuss the role of NO• in human physiology and pathophysiology, including the very important relationship between NO• and the glutathione-transferases, a class of protective enzymes involved in cellular protection. The emerging role of NO• in three main areas of epigenetics—DNA methylation, microRNAs, and histone modifications—is then discussed. Finally, we describe the recent development of a model cell line system in which human tumor cell lines were adapted to high NO• (HNO) levels. We anticipate that these HNO cell lines will serve as a useful tool in the ongoing efforts to better understand the role of NO• in cancer
