    Color Gradients Detected in the HD 15115 Circumstellar Disk

    We report HST/NICMOS coronagraphic images of the HD 15115 circumstellar disk at 1.1\micron. We find a similar morphology to that seen in the visible and at H band--an edge-on disk that is asymmetric in surface brightness. Several aspects of the 1.1\micron data are different, highlighting the need for multi-wavelength images of each circumstellar disk. We find a flattening to the western surface brightness profile at 1.1\micron interior to 2\arcsec (90 AU) and a warp in the western half of the disk. We measure the surface brightness profiles of the two disk lobes and create a measure of the dust scattering efficiency between 0.55-1.65\micron at 1\arcsec, 2\arcsec, and 3\arcsec. At 2\arcsec the western lobe has a neutral spectrum up to 1.1\micron and a strong absorption or blue spectrum >>1.1\micron, while a blue trend is seen in the eastern lobe.     The Eyes Have It: Sex and Sexual Orientation Differences in Pupil Dilation Patterns

    Recent research suggests profound sex and sexual orientation differences in sexual response. These results, however, are based on measures of genital arousal, which have potential limitations such as volunteer bias and differential measures for the sexes. The present study introduces a measure less affected by these limitations. We assessed the pupil dilation of 325 men and women of various sexual orientations to male and female erotic stimuli. Results supported hypotheses. In general, self-reported sexual orientation corresponded with pupil dilation to men and women. Among men, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in bisexual-identified men. In contrast, among women, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in heterosexual-identified women. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Because the measure of pupil dilation is less invasive than previous measures of sexual response, it allows for studying diverse age and cultural populations, usually not included in sexuality research

    Genesis and evolution of dust in galaxies in the early Universe I. Modeling dust evolution in starburst galaxies

    We have developed a numerical galactic chemical evolution model. The model is constructed such that the effect of a wide range of parameters can be investigated. It takes into account results from stellar evolution models, a differentiation between diverse types of core collapse SNe and the contribution of AGB stars in the mass range 3-8 Msun. We consider the lifetime-dependent yield injection into the ISM by all sources as well as dust destruction due to SN shocks in the ISM. We ascertain the temporal progression of the dust mass, the dust-to-gas and dust-to-metal mass ratios as well as other physical properties of a galaxy and study their dependence on the mass of the galaxy, the IMF, dust production efficiencies and dust destruction in the ISM. The amount of dust and the physical properties of a galaxy strongly depend on the initial gas mass available. Overall, while the total amount of dust produced increases with galaxy mass, the detailed outcome depends on the SN dust production efficiency, the IMF and the strength of dust destruction in the ISM. Dust masses are higher for IMFs biased towards higher stellar masses, despite the fact that these IMFs are more strongly affected by dust destruction in the ISM. The sensitivity to the IMF increases as the mass of the galaxy decreases. SNe are primarily responsible for a significant enrichment with dust at early epochs (< 200 Myr). Dust production with a dominant contribution by AGB stars is found to be insufficient to account for dust masses in excess of 10^8 Msun within 400 Myr after starburst. We find that galaxies with initial gas masses between 1-5 x 10^11 Msun are sufficiently massive to enable production of dust masses >10^8 Msun. Our preferred scenario is dominated by SN dust production in combination with top-heavy IMFs and moderate dust destruction in the ISM.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 4 table

    In vivo evaluation of different formulation strategies for sustained release injectables of a poorly soluble HIV protease inhibitor

    At present no scientific rationale exists for selecting a particular enabling strategy to formulate a poorly water-soluble drug, although this is crucial as it will influence the in vivo performance of the resulting formulation. This study provides an insight into this complicated decision making process for a poorly soluble human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease inhibitor based upon in vivo test results. A formulation strategy based on the molecular dispersion of this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) into a biphasic matrix consisting of water-insoluble poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and water-soluble polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was evaluated. The long-term in vivo performance of this strategy was compared to that of other solubility enhancing approaches by evaluating the exposure in male Beagle dogs. Solid dispersions, based on a PLGA/PVP matrix, were compared to solid dispersions in a pure water-insoluble PLGA matrix. Additionally these solid dispersion strategies were compared to the strategy of particle size reduction by means of an API microsuspension. The in vivo performance of the various formulations over a period of 28 days after intramuscular injection was evaluated by the observed initial burst release, plasma concentration-time profiles, time at which maximum plasma levels were reached (tmax,obs) and the estimated bioavailability. Compared to the other formulation strategies assessed, it was concluded that the addition of PVP in a PLGA matrix resulted in vivo in a more sustained release as well as a higher amount of drug released from the polymeric matrix. This was explained based on the structure of these binary PLGA/PVP matrices where the pore network originating from rapidly dissolving PVP plays a crucial role. Moreover, the results suggest that the release of this type of formulations could be delayed by increasing the amount of PLGA in the formulation

    This article considers how sex and gender – as conceptual categories and as a lived experience – are subject to contestation and renegotiation in the contemporary UK. Exploring gendered shifts through the lenses of identity and embodiment, the article captures key moments where certainties have been undone within feminist and transgender thought and activism. Yet such fissures resound with calls for a return to traditional understandings of the sexed body. The article pays particular attention to debates within feminism around transgender issues, and sketches out a climate of transgender moral panic whereby conservative thinkers and some feminist activists are joining forces with the aim of resurrecting gender binaries
