Tidal flat deposits of the Lower Proterozoic Campbell Group along the southwestern margin of the Kaapvaal Craton, Northern Cape Province, South Africa
Lower Proterozoic stromatolites and associated clastic carbonate deposits of the Campbell Group, from the southern margin (Prieska area) of the Kaapvaal Craton, northern Cape Province, are described. Contrary to previous interpretations (Beukes, 1978; 1980a) shallow subtidal to supratidal facies are recognised and discussed in regional context. An alternative model for the facies development of the Campbell Group is proposed

Gas distribution, kinematics and star formation in faint dwarf galaxies
We compare the gas distribution, kinematics and the current star formation in
a sample of 10 very faint (-13.37 < M_B < -9.55) dwarf galaxies. For 5 of these
galaxies we present fresh, high sensitivity, GMRT HI 21cm observations. For all
our galaxies we construct maps of the HI column density at a constant linear
resolution of ~300 pc; this forms an excellent data set to check for the
presence of a threshold column density for star formation. We find that while
current star formation (as traced by Halpha emission) is confined to regions
with relatively large (N_HI > (0.4 -1.7) X 10^{21} atoms cm^{-2}) HI column
density, the morphology of the Halpha emission is in general not correlated
with that of the high HI column density gas. Thus, while high column density
gas may be necessary for star formation, in this sample at least, it is not
sufficient to ensure that star formation does in fact occur. We examine the
line profiles of the HI emission, but do not find a simple relation between
regions with complex line profiles and those with on-going star formation.
Finally, we examine the very fine scale (~20-100 pc) distribution of the HI
gas, and find that at these scales the emission exhibits a variety of shell
like, clumpy and filamentary features. The Halpha emission is sometimes
associated with high density HI clumps, sometimes the Halpha emission lies
inside a high density shell, and sometimes there is no correspondence between
the Halpha emission and the HI clumps. In summary, the interplay between star
formation and gas density in these galaxy does not seem to show the simple

What turns galaxies off? The different morphologies of star-forming and quiescent galaxies since z~2 from CANDELS
We use HST/WFC3 imaging from the CANDELS Multicycle Treasury Survey, in
conjunction with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to explore the evolution of
galactic structure for galaxies with stellar masses >3e10M_sun from z=2.2 to
the present epoch, a time span of 10Gyr. We explore the relationship between
rest-frame optical color, stellar mass, star formation activity and galaxy
structure. We confirm the dramatic increase from z=2.2 to the present day in
the number density of non-star-forming galaxies above 3e10M_sun reported by
others. We further find that the vast majority of these quiescent systems have
concentrated light profiles, as parametrized by the Sersic index, and the
population of concentrated galaxies grows similarly rapidly. We examine the
joint distribution of star formation activity, Sersic index, stellar mass,
inferred velocity dispersion, and stellar surface density. Quiescence
correlates poorly with stellar mass at all z<2.2. Quiescence correlates well
with Sersic index at all redshifts. Quiescence correlates well with `velocity
dispersion' and stellar surface density at z>1.3, and somewhat less well at
lower redshifts. Yet, there is significant scatter between quiescence and
galaxy structure: while the vast majority of quiescent galaxies have prominent
bulges, many of them have significant disks, and a number of bulge-dominated
galaxies have significant star formation. Noting the rarity of quiescent
galaxies without prominent bulges, we argue that a prominent bulge (and
perhaps, by association, a supermassive black hole) is an important condition
for quenching star formation on galactic scales over the last 10Gyr, in
qualitative agreement with the AGN feedback paradigm.Comment: The Astrophysical Journal, in press; 20 pages with 13 figure
Star forming dwarf galaxies
Star forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) have a high gas content and low
metallicities, reminiscent of the basic entities in hierarchical galaxy
formation scenarios. In the young universe they probably also played a major
role in the cosmic reionization. Their abundant presence in the local volume
and their youthful character make them ideal objects for detailed studies of
the initial stellar mass function (IMF), fundamental star formation processes
and its feedback to the interstellar medium. Occasionally we witness SFDGs
involved in extreme starbursts, giving rise to strongly elevated production of
super star clusters and global superwinds, mechanisms yet to be explored in
more detail. SFDGs is the initial state of all dwarf galaxies and the relation
to the environment provides us with a key to how different types of dwarf
galaxies are emerging. In this review we will put the emphasis on the exotic
starburst phase, as it seems less important for present day galaxy evolution

Muslim Profiles Post-9/11: Is Racial Profiling an Effective Counterterrorist Measure and Does it Violate the Right to be Free from Discrimination?
Safety and immunogenicity of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in infants and children identified as HIV-infected during a randomized trial in sub-Saharan Africa
Background: We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in a subset of
children identified as HIV-infected during a large phase III randomized controlled trial conducted in
seven sub-Saharan African countries.
Methods: Infants 6–12 weeks and children 5–17 months old were randomized to receive 4 RTS,S/AS01
doses (R3R group), 3 RTS,S/AS01 doses plus 1 comparator vaccine dose (R3C group), or 4 comparator vaccine doses (C3C group) at study months 0, 1, 2 and 20. Infants and children with WHO stage III/IV HIV
disease were excluded but HIV testing was not routinely performed on all participants; our analyses
included children identified as HIV-infected based on medical history or clinical suspicion and confirmed
by polymerase chain reaction or antibody testing. Serious adverse events (SAEs) and anticircumsporozoite (CS) antibodies were assessed.
Results: Of 15459 children enrolled in the trial, at least 1953 were tested for HIV and 153 were confirmed
as HIV-infected (R3R: 51; R3C: 54; C3C: 48). Among these children, SAEs were reported for 92.2% (95% CI:
81.1–97.8) in the R3R, 85.2% (72.9–93.4) in the R3C and 87.5% (74.8–95.3) in the C3C group over a median
follow-up of 39.3, 39.4 and 38.3 months, respectively. Fifteen HIV-infected participants in each group
(R3R: 29.4%, R3C: 27.8%, C3C: 31.3%) died during the study. No deaths were considered vaccinationrelated. In a matched case-control analysis, 1 month post dose 3 anti-CS geometric mean antibody concentrations were 193.3 EU/mL in RTS,S/AS01-vaccinated HIV-infected children and 491.5 EU/mL in RTS,S/
AS01-vaccinated immunogenicity controls with unknown or negative HIV status (p = 0.0001).
Conclusions: The safety profile of RTS,S/AS01 in HIV-infected children was comparable to that of the comparator (meningococcal or rabies) vaccines. RTS,S/AS01 was immunogenic in HIV-infected children but
antibody concentrations were lower than in children with an unknown or negative HIV status
