Light scattering from an isotropic layer between uniaxial crystals
We develop a model for the reflection and transmission of plane waves by an
isotropic layer sandwiched between two uniaxial crystals of arbitrary
orientation. In the laboratory frame, reflection and transmission coefficients
corresponding to the principal polarization directions in each crystal are
given explicitly in terms of the c-axis and propagation directions. The
solution is found by first deriving explicit expressions for reflection and
transmission amplitude coefficients for waves propagating from an arbitrarily
oriented uniaxial anisotropic material into an isotropic material. By combining
these results with Lekner's (1991) earlier treatment of waves propagating from
isotropic media to anisotropic media and employing a matrix method we determine
a solution to the general form of the multiple reflection case. The example
system of a wetted interface between two ice crystals is used to contextualize

Photoproduction of eta mesons from the neutron: cross sections and double polarization observable E
Photoproduction of mesons from neutrons} \abstract{Results from
measurements of the photoproduction of mesons from quasifree protons and
neutrons are summarized. The experiments were performed with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn using the
decay. A liquid deuterium target was used for the
measurement of total cross sections and angular distributions. The results
confirm earlier measurements from Bonn and the MAMI facility in Mainz about the
existence of a narrow structure in the excitation function of . The current angular distributions show a forward-backward
asymmetry, which was previously not seen, but was predicted by model
calculations including an additional narrow state. Furthermore, data
obtained with a longitudinally polarized, deuterated butanol target and a
circularly polarized photon beam were analyzed to determine the double
polarization observable . Both data sets together were also used to extract
the helicity dependent cross sections and . The
narrow structure in the excitation function of

Feasibility studies of the time-like proton electromagnetic form factor measurements with PANDA at FAIR
The possibility of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors in the
time-like region at FAIR with the \PANDA detector is discussed. Detailed
simulations on signal efficiency for the annihilation of into a
lepton pair as well as for the most important background channels have been
performed. It is shown that precision measurements of the differential cross
section of the reaction can be obtained in a wide
angular and kinematical range. The individual determination of the moduli of
the electric and magnetic proton form factors will be possible up to a value of
momentum transfer squared of (GeV/c). The total cross section will be measured up to (GeV/c).
The results obtained from simulated events are compared to the existing data.

Feasibility studies of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors at PANDA at FAIR
Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form
factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported.
The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined
is estimated. The signal channel is studied on the basis
of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main
background channel, , is studied.
Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and
systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated
using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a
previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a
slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range
of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector
performance
Analysis Tools for Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments
The series of workshops on New Partial-Wave Analysis Tools for
Next-Generation Hadron Spectroscopy Experiments was initiated with the ATHOS
2012 meeting, which took place in Camogli, Italy, June 20-22, 2012. It was
followed by ATHOS 2013 in Kloster Seeon near Munich, Germany, May 21-24, 2013.
The third, ATHOS3, meeting is planned for April 13-17, 2015 at The George
Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus, USA. The
workshops focus on the development of amplitude analysis tools for meson and
baryon spectroscopy, and complement other programs in hadron spectroscopy
organized in the recent past including the INT-JLab Workshop on Hadron
Spectroscopy in Seattle in 2009, the International Workshop on Amplitude
Analysis in Hadron Spectroscopy at the ECT*-Trento in 2011, the School on
Amplitude Analysis in Modern Physics in Bad Honnef in 2011, the Jefferson Lab
Advanced Study Institute Summer School in 2012, and the School on Concepts of
Modern Amplitude Analysis Techniques in Flecken-Zechlin near Berlin in
September 2013. The aim of this document is to summarize the discussions that
took place at the ATHOS 2012 and ATHOS 2013 meetings. We do not attempt a
comprehensive review of the field of amplitude analysis, but offer a collection

Aging enhances serum cytokine response but not task-induced grip strength declines in a rat model of work-related musculoskeletal disorders
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We previously reported early tissue injury, increased serum and tissue inflammatory cytokines and decreased grip in young rats performing a moderate demand repetitive task. The tissue cytokine response was transient, the serum response and decreased grip were still evident by 8 weeks. Thus, here, we examined their levels at 12 weeks in young rats. Since aging is known to enhance serum cytokine levels, we also examined aged rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Aged and young rats, 14 mo and 2.5 mo of age at onset, respectfully, were trained 15 min/day for 4 weeks, and then performed a high repetition, low force (HRLF) reaching and grasping task for 2 hours/day, for 12 weeks. Serum was assayed for 6 cytokines: IL-1alpha, IL-6, IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, MIP2, IL-10. Grip strength was assayed, since we have previously shown an inverse correlation between grip strength and serum inflammatory cytokines. Results were compared to naĂŻve (grip), and normal, food-restricted and trained-only controls.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Serum cytokines were higher overall in aged than young rats, with increases in IL-1alpha, IFN-gamma and IL-6 in aged Trained and 12-week HRLF rats, compared to young Trained and HRLF rats (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively, each). IL-6 was also increased in aged 12-week HRLF versus aged normal controls (p < 0.05). Serum IFN-gamma and MIP2 levels were also increased in young 6-week HRLF rats, but no cytokines were above baseline levels in young 12-week HRLF rats. Grip strength declined in both young and aged 12-week HRLF rats, compared to naĂŻve and normal controls (p < 0.05 each), but these declines correlated only with IL-6 levels in aged rats (r = -0.39).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Aging enhanced a serum cytokine response in general, a response that was even greater with repetitive task performance. Grip strength was adversely affected by task performance in both age groups, but was apparently influenced by factors other than serum cytokine levels in young rats.</p
Genome-Wide Association Study of the Modified Stumvoll Insulin Sensitivity Index Identifies BCL2 and FAM19A2 as Novel Insulin Sensitivity Loci
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have found few common variants that influence fasting measures of insulin sensitivity. We hypothesized that a GWAS of an integrated assessment of fasting and dynamic measures of insulin sensitivity would detect novel common variants. We performed a GWAS of the modified Stumvoll Insulin Sensitivity Index (ISI) within the Meta-Analyses of Glucose and Insulin-Related Traits Consortium. Discovery for genetic association was performed in 16,753 individuals, and replication was attempted for the 23 most significant novel loci in 13,354 independent individuals. Association with ISI was tested in models adjusted for age, sex, and BMI and in a model analyzing the combined influence of the genotype effect adjusted for BMI and the interaction effect between the genotype and BMI on ISI (model 3). In model 3, three variants reached genome-wide significance: Rs13422522 (NYAP2; P = 8.87 Ă 10-11), rs12454712 (BCL2; P = 2.7 Ă 10-8), and rs10506418 (FAM19A2; P = 1.9 Ă 10-8). The association at NYAP2 was eliminated by conditioning on the known IRS1 insulin sensitivity locus; the BCL2 and FAM19A2 associations were independent of known cardiometabolic loci. In conclusion, we identified two novel loci and replicated known variants associated with insulin sensitivity. Further studies are needed to clarify the causal variant and function at the BCL2 and FAM19A2 loci
Beamâtarget helicity asymmetry E in K+ÎŁâ photoproduction on the neutron
We report a measurement of a beamâtarget double-polarisation observable (E) for the Îłânâ(p)âK+ÎŁâ(p) reaction. The data were obtained impinging the circularly-polarised energy-tagged photon beam of Hall B at Jefferson Lab on a longitudinally-polarised frozen-spin hydrogen deuteride (HD) nuclear target. The E observable for an effective neutron target was determined for centre-of-mass energies 1.70â€Wâ€2.30 GeV, with reaction products detected over a wide angular acceptance by the CLAS spectrometer. These new double-polarisation data give unique constraints on the strange decays of excited neutron states. Inclusion of the new data within the Bonn-Gatchina theoretical model results in significant changes for the extracted photocouplings of a number of established nucleon resonances. Possible improvements in the PWA description of the experimental data with additional âmissingâ resonance states, including the N(2120)3/2â resonance, are also quantified
First measurements of the double-polarization observables F, P, and H in Ï photoproduction off transversely polarized protons in the N* resonance region
First measurements of double-polarization observables in Ï photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry F has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200â2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries H and P have been measured using linearly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200â2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon (Nâ) resonances. In particular, contributions from new Nâ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum
Feasibility studies for the measurement of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors from pÂŻ pâ ÎŒ+ÎŒ- at P ÂŻ ANDA at FAIR
This paper reports on Monte Carlo simulation results for future measurements of the moduli of time-like proton electromagnetic form factors, | GE| and | GM| , using the pÂŻ pâ ÎŒ+ÎŒ- reaction at P ÂŻ ANDA (FAIR). The electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities parameterizing the electric and magnetic structure of hadrons. This work estimates the statistical and total accuracy with which the form factors can be measured at P ÂŻ ANDA , using an analysis of simulated data within the PandaRoot software framework. The most crucial background channel is pÂŻ pâ Ï+Ï-, due to the very similar behavior of muons and pions in the detector. The suppression factors are evaluated for this and all other relevant background channels at different values of antiproton beam momentum. The signal/background separation is based on a multivariate analysis, using the Boosted Decision Trees method. An expected background subtraction is included in this study, based on realistic angular distributions of the background contribution. Systematic uncertainties are considered and the relative total uncertainties of the form factor measurements are presented
