    A preliminary examination of selected biological links between four Eastern Cape estuaries and the inshore marine environment

    The coastal transition zone (CTZ), which links the terrestrial and marine environments, has been identified as a region of high biological diversity and elevated production. Results of studies conducted in the northern hemisphere indicate that the links between estuaries and the adjacent marine environment is critical to ecological functioning within the CTZ. This study assessed the influence of selected estuaries with different hydrodynamic characteristics on the adjacent marine environment along the south-eastern coastline of southern Africa. Four estuaries were examined, including two permanently open systems, the fresh water deprived Kariega and fresh water dominated Great Fish, and two temporarily open/closed estuaries (TOCE), the Kasouga and East Kleinemonde. Results of the study indicated that outflow of estuarine water from the Great Fish Estuary contributed to a plume of less saline water being evident within the adjacent marine environment. The plume of water was associated with increased zooplankton biomass and particulate organic matter (POM) and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Adjacent to the Kariega Estuary, no evidence of fresh water outflow into the marine environment was observed. However, in the sea directly opposite the mouth of the estuary an increase in zooplankton abundance and biomass was evident. Results of numerical analyses indicated that the increase in zooplankton abundance observed adjacent to the mouth of both permanently open estuaries could not be attributed to the export of zooplankton from the estuary, but rather the accumulation of marine species within the region. The mechanisms responsible for this accumulation were not determined, but it was thought to be associated with increased food availability in the estuarine frontal zone. A similar, but less dramatic biological response was also observed in the marine environment adjacent to the two TOCEs. It is suggested that the increase in biological activity within these regions could be ascribed to seepage of estuarine or ground water through the sand bar that separates these estuaries from the sea. Results of stable carbon isotope analyses indicated that both the Great Fish and Kariega estuaries exported carbon to the nearshore marine environment. The area influenced by estuarine derived carbon was dependent on the volume of estuarine outflow to the marine environment. Adjacent to the fresh water dominated Great Fish Estuary, estuarine derived carbon was recorded up to 12km from the mouth, while adjacent to the fresh water deprived Kariega, estuarine derived carbon was only evident directly opposite the mouth. The recruitment of macrozooplankton (> 2cm) into the fresh water deprived Kariega Estuary was in the range recorded for other permanently open southern African estuaries with higher fresh water flow rates. This indicates that the mechanisms which allow estuarine dependent larvae to locate and enter estuaries are not related to fresh water inflow. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated that despite their small size relative to European and North American systems, South African permanently open and temporarily open/closed estuaries also influence biological activity within the adjacent nearshore marine environment

    Ichthyofaunal community structures in different types of Eastern Cape estuaries

    This investigation had three major objectives; firstly to document the estuarine fishes from several poorly studied Eastern Cape estuaries, secondly, to identify similarities and differences in the fish communities from permanently open and intermittently open estuaries, and thirdly, to establish which physico-chemical or environmental variables are responsible for the structuring of these communities. The study area incorporated 10 estuaries along a 70 km long stretch of the Eastern Cape coastline between the towns of Seafield (33° 32' 42" S, 27° 03' 05" E) in the south-east and Hamburg (33° 16' 45" S, 27° 29' 50" E) in the north-west. The systems investigated included two permanently open estuaries and eight intermittently open systems of varying sizes. Overall fish abundance and species richness in the study area revealed no significant seasonal variation. A contrast between open and closed estuaries was evident in the dominance of species from different estuarine dependence categories. Open estuaries comprised mainly category Ib, lla and IIb species, with a high proportion of category IV species. Closed estuaries were dominated by category IIa species, with few category IV species represented. Clear longitudinal trends in relative abundance were demonstrated for individual species. Margalefs species richness index for seine net catches, and a combination of the seine and gill net data, were significantly correlated with catchment size, mean annual runoff, estuarine area and linear length. Fish assemblages in the permanently open and intermittently open estuaries were significantly different (p<0.001) when analysed on a community and density basis. Similarly, the communities in large and small intermittently open estuaries differed significantly on a community (p=0.01) and density basis (p<0.001). These differences where caused by changes in abundance of the dominant estuarine resident and marine migrant species. The environmental variable that was dominant in accounting for these differences was the estuary mouth status. Estuarine resident species had smaller overall body lengths when compared with the marine migrant species. In addition, the estuarine resident species had smaller modal size classes in the closed estuaries when compared with the open estuaries. These differences may be linked to the foraging strategies of the species, as well as food availability and different levels of predation in the different estuary types. The marine migrant species did not show any trends in this respect although the closed systems had the largest individuals for all four dominant marine species. This finding may be linked to the inability of these species to breed in closed estuaries, thus channelling reproductive energy resources into somatic growth. In addition, prolonged periods of mouth closure prevent the emigration of large individuals back to the sea. Otter trawling was conducted in fiye estuaries and captured mostly demersal species. The otter trawl data confirmed the seine net community analysis, with significantly different communities identified in the permanently open and intermittently open estuaries (p=0.02), as well as in the small and large intermittently open estuaries (p=0.03). The environmental variables responsible for these community differences were mouth status and variables associated with estuarine size. The identification of estuary mouth status by this study as the most influential environmental factor is compounded by this "ariable affecting or being indicative of numerous other physico-chemical features. The large differences in the fish communities in different estuary types indicate the importance of each estuary type to various species. This should be taken into account before allowing any form of commercial fishing in these important nursery areas

    Recovery of the critically endangered river pipefish, Syngnathus watermeyeri, in the Kariega Estuary, Eastern Cape province

    An intensive ichthyofaunal survey in the permanently open Kariega Estuary along the Eastern Cape coast has identified a breeding population of the critically endangered river pipefish, Syngnathus watermeyeri, within the middle and upper reaches of the system. This is the first recorded capture of this species in the estuary for over four decades. We suggest that the presence of S. watermeyeri is the result of the heavy rainfall within the region, which contributed to the establishment of optimum habitat requirements (mesohaline conditions and increased food availability) of the pipefish

    Biological responses to a resumption in river flow in a freshwater-deprived, permanently open Southern African estuary

    The Kariega Estuary is a freshwater-deprived system due to numerous impoundments in the catchment. This system has had little or no horizontal salinity gradient over the last 15 years, with hypersaline conditions sometimes predominating in the upper reaches. Following high rainfall events in the catchment during the spring of 2006, including a flood event (approximate 1:10 year) in August 2006, a series of riverine pulses entered the estuary and a horizontal salinity gradient was established. This study examined the influence of this freshwater pulse on four components of the biota within the estuary, namely the zooplankton, and larval, littoral and demersal fishes. The study demonstrated that in three of these components elevated densities were recorded following the riverine input, with only the littoral fishes retaining an almost constant density. In addition, changes in the relative contributions of the estuarine utilisation classes for all three fish groups examined indicated that freshwater input into these systems positively influences the abundances. This has significant implications for water managers as it demonstrates the importance of an Ecological Reserve (defined as ‘the water required to protect the aquatic ecosystems of the water resource’) for this system

    Outcome for pediatric adreno-cortical tumors is best predicted by the COG stage and five-item microscopic score — report from the German MET studies

    Background: Adrenocortical tumors (ACTs) encompassing the adrenocortical adenoma (ACA), carcinoma (ACC), and tumors of undetermined malignant potential (ACx) are rare endocrine neoplasms with a poor prognosis. We report on pediatric ACT patients registered with the Malignant Endocrine Tumor studies and explore the EXPeRT recommendations for management. Patients: Data from the ACT patients (<18 years) were analyzed. For the risk prediction, the patients were retrospectively assigned to the COG stages and the five-item score. Results: By December 2021, 161 patients with ACT (ACA n = 51, ACx n = 19, and ACC n = 91) had been reported (the median age at the diagnosis was 4.3 years with a range of 0.1–17.8), with lymph node and distant metastases in 10.7% and 18.9% of the patients with ACC/ACx. The mean follow-up was 4.5 years (with a range of 0–16.7). The three-year overall (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) rates were 65.5% and 50.6%. In the univariate analyses, the OS was impaired for patients aged ≥ 4 years (p = 0.001) with the initial biopsy (p = 0.016), tumor spillage (p = 0.028), incomplete tumor resection (p < 0.001), unfavorable histology (p = 0.047), and COG stages III/IV (p = 0.002). Multivariate analysis revealed COG stages III/IV and an unfavorable five-item score as independent negative prognostic factors for the EFS and OS. Conclusions: Age defines the clinical presentation and prognosis in pediatric ACTs. The outcome is best predicted by the COG stage and five-item score

    Refractory and relapsed paediatric ACC in the MET studies – a challenging situation necessitating novel diagnostic and therapeutic concepts

    Background Paediatric adrenocortical carcinomas (ACC) are highly aggressive malignancies with a dismal prognosis in advanced and metastatic disease. Little is known about outcome of patients with refractory and relapsed (r/r) disease. Procedure National retrospective multicentre study including r/r ACC diagnosed in patients aged <18 years registered in the MET studies between January 1997 and December 2021 Results A total of 16 patients (5 male; median age 12.9 years) with refractory disease were included. Median time to progression was 0.6 years [0.0-1.3]. Site of progression was locoregional (n=1), distant (n=3), and combined (n=12). 3-year overall (OS) and progression-free (PFS) survival were both 0%. Thirty patients with relapse (11 male; median age 7.3 years) were identified. Median time to relapse was 0.7 years [0.1-3.2]. Site of relapse was locoregional (n=8), distant (n=15), and combined (n=7). At last follow-up, 20 patients had died of disease or complications or were alive with disease, 10 patients were in second complete remission (median follow-up: 6.8 years [0-10.5]). 3-year OS and PFS following relapse were 39.1% and 31.9%. Survival was superior in patients with distant relapse (59.6%) compared to locoregional (28.6%) and combined (14.3%) (p=0.028) and in patients with complete surgical resection of all sites of recurrence (70.0%) compared to incomplete (21.4%) and no surgery (0%) (p=0.003). Conclusions For patients nonresponsive to first-line therapy or who experience relapse, prognosis is dismal and options are scarce. Site of relapse and resectability define prognosis. Novel therapeutic concepts are needed to improve the outcome of paediatric patients with r/r ACC

    Influence of Polymorphism on the Electronic Structure of Ga2O3

    The search for new wide band gap materials is intensifying to satisfy the need for more advanced and energy efficient power electronic devices. Ga2_2O3_3 has emerged as an alternative to SiC and GaN, sparking a renewed interest in its fundamental properties beyond the main β\beta-phase. Here, three polymorphs of Ga2_2O3_3, α\alpha, β\beta and ε\varepsilon, are investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopy, and ab initio theoretical approaches to gain insights into their structure - electronic structure relationships. Valence and conduction electronic structure as well as semi-core and core states are probed, providing a complete picture of the influence of local coordination environments on the electronic structure. State-of-the-art electronic structure theory, including all-electron density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, provide detailed understanding of the spectroscopic results. The calculated spectra provide very accurate descriptions of all experimental spectra and additionally illuminate the origin of observed spectral features. This work provides a strong basis for the exploration of the Ga2_2O3_3 polymorphs as materials at the heart of future electronic device generations.Comment: Updated manuscript version after peer revie

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns
