    Heat-Labile Enterotoxin: Beyond GM1 Binding

    Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a significant source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. One major virulence factor released by ETEC is the heat-labile enterotoxin LT, which is structurally and functionally similar to cholera toxin. LT consists of five B subunits carrying a single catalytically active A subunit. LTB binds the monosialoganglioside GM1, the toxin’s host receptor, but interactions with A-type blood sugars and E. coli lipopolysaccharide have also been identified within the past decade. Here, we review the regulation, assembly, and binding properties of the LT B-subunit pentamer and discuss the possible roles of its numerous molecular interactions

    Biogeographical and ecological theory suggests that species distributions should be driven to higher altitudes and latitudes as global temperatures rise. Such changes occur as growth improves at the poleward edge of a species distribution and declines at the range edge in the opposite or equatorial direction, mirrored by changes in the establishment of new individuals. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that such processes are underway for a wide variety of species. Case studies from populations at the equatorial range edge of a variety of woody species have led us to understand that widespread growth decline and distributional shifts are underway. However, in apparent contrast, other studies report high productivity and reproduction in some range edge populations. We sought to assess temporal trends in the growth of the widespread European beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) across its latitudinal range. We explored the stability of populations to major drought events and the implications for predicted widespread growth decline at its equatorial range edge. In contrast to expectations, we found greatest sensitivity and low resistance to drought in the core of the species range, while dry range edge populations showed particularly high resistance to drought and little evidence of drought-linked growth decline. We hypothesise that this high range-edge resistance to drought is driven primarily by local environmental factors that allow relict populations to persist despite regionally unfavourable climate. The persistence of such populations demonstrates that range edge decline is not ubiquitous and is likely to be driven by declining population density at the landscape scale rather than sudden and widespread range retraction

    The ATLAS fast tracKer system

    The ATLAS Fast TracKer (FTK) was designed to provide full tracking for the ATLAS high-level trigger by using pattern recognition based on Associative Memory (AM) chips and fitting in high-speed field programmable gate arrays. The tracks found by the FTK are based on inputs from all modules of the pixel and silicon microstrip trackers. The as-built FTK system and components are described, as is the online software used to control them while running in the ATLAS data acquisition system. Also described is the simulation of the FTK hardware and the optimization of the AM pattern banks. An optimization for long-lived particles with large impact parameter values is included. A test of the FTK system with the data playback facility that allowed the FTK to be commissioned during the shutdown between Run 2 and Run 3 of the LHC is reported. The resulting tracks from part of the FTK system covering a limited η-ϕ region of the detector are compared with the output from the FTK simulation.     An Inexpensive Paper-Based Aluminum-Air Battery

    Paper-based batteries are an alternative to traditional batteries due to their low cost, portability, and simplicity to operate. In the present work, we demonstrate an improved and inexpensive paper-based aluminum-air battery employing KOH as the electrolyte with sufficient energy to power small devices. The dimensions of the device, electrode size, and electrolyte concentration were optimized with respect to amperage and reproducibility. The maximum amperage of 17.4 mA and maximum power of 3.0 mW was achieved with a 9 cm2 battery with anode and cathode electrode areas of 5.1 cm2 and 3.75 cm2 respectively, using 1.5 M potassium hydroxide (KOH). In a series configuration, the batteries generate sufficient energy to power light-emitting diodes (LEDs), a flashlight, a glucometer, and a pregnancy test

    Synthesis of Ni–TiO2 Nanocomposites as Enzyme–Less, Amperometric Sensors for the Electrooxidation of Glucose

    The simple synthesis of a Ni–TiO _2 nanocomposite supported on Vulcan carbon (XC–72 R) for the electrooxidation reaction of glucose is reported. Four transition metal weight ratios were synthesized and characterized. Cyclic voltammetry studies in 0.1 M NaOH demonstrate that the four metal catalysts can effectively oxidize 1 mM glucose, with the 3:1 (60%) Ni to Ti nanocomposite yielding the highest current. The 60% Ni–TiO _2 /XC72R catalyst was used to construct an enzyme–less, chronoamperometric sensor for glucose detection in an alkaline medium. Using 50 μ M aliquots of glucose at a potential of +0.7 V (vs Hg/HgO), the sensor responded rapidly (<3 s), provided a sensitivity of 3300 μ A mM ^−1 cm ^−2 , detection limits of 144 nM (Signal/Noise = 3), and excellent selectivity and reproducibility. The glucose aliquot concentrations were then increased to 1 mM to mimic physiological blood conditions of 1–20 mM. At a potential of +0.7 V (vs Hg/HgO), the sensor continued to respond rapidly (<1 s), showed a sensitivity of 273.7 μ A mM ^−1 cm ^−2 , detection limits of 3.13 μ M (S/N = 3), and excellent selectivity and reproducibility. The catalyst also exhibited an ideal anti–poisoning capability to free chloride ions and negligible signals towards other interfering species
