    Earthquakes: from chemical alteration to mechanical rupture

    In the standard rebound theory of earthquakes, elastic deformation energy is progressively stored in the crust until a threshold is reached at which it is suddenly released in an earthquake. We review three important paradoxes, the strain paradox, the stress paradox and the heat flow paradox, that are difficult to account for in this picture, either individually or when taken together. Resolutions of these paradoxes usually call for additional assumptions on the nature of the rupture process (such as novel modes of deformations and ruptures) prior to and/or during an earthquake, on the nature of the fault and on the effect of trapped fluids within the crust at seismogenic depths. We review the evidence for the essential importance of water and its interaction with the modes of deformations. Water is usually seen to have mainly the mechanical effect of decreasing the normal lithostatic stress in the fault core on one hand and to weaken rock materials via hydrolytic weakening and stress corrosion on the other hand. We also review the evidences that water plays a major role in the alteration of minerals subjected to finite strains into other structures in out-of-equilibrium conditions. This suggests novel exciting routes to understand what is an earthquake, that requires to develop a truly multidisciplinary approach involving mineral chemistry, geology, rupture mechanics and statistical physics.Comment: 44 pages, 1 figures, submitted to Physics Report

    Hercynian late-post-tectonic granitic rocks from the Fornos de Algodres area (Northern Central Portugal)

    The Fornos de Algodres Complex (FAC) comprises several intrusions of late-post-tectonic Hercynian granitic rocks ranging in composition from hornblende granodiorites and quartz monzodiorites, through coarse porphyritic biotite granites and two-mica granites (coarse-, medium- and fine-grained), to muscovite-rich leucogranites. Field and regional constraints show that the emplacement of this large, composite, batholithic complex post-dates the main Variscan regional deformation phases (D1 + D2 + D3) and associated metamorphic events. Field, petrographic and geochemical data suggest a strong genetic relationship between most of the members of the FAC. However, their Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd isotopic signatures appear to rule out any genetic process involving a single homogeneous source and/or closed-system fractional crystallization of the same parental magma. A model involving hybridization of mantle-derived basaltic liquids with crustal anatectic melts followed by further contamination and fractional crystallization is proposed to explain the isotopic and geochemical variation trends defined by the FAC granitic rocks

    Topography of Extracellular Matrix Mediates Vascular Morphogenesis and Migration Speeds in Angiogenesis

    The extracellular matrix plays a critical role in orchestrating the events necessary for wound healing, muscle repair, morphogenesis, new blood vessel growth, and cancer invasion. In this study, we investigate the influence of extracellular matrix topography on the coordination of multi-cellular interactions in the context of angiogenesis. To do this, we validate our spatio-temporal mathematical model of angiogenesis against empirical data, and within this framework, we vary the density of the matrix fibers to simulate different tissue environments and to explore the possibility of manipulating the extracellular matrix to achieve pro- and anti-angiogenic effects. The model predicts specific ranges of matrix fiber densities that maximize sprout extension speed, induce branching, or interrupt normal angiogenesis, which are independently confirmed by experiment. We then explore matrix fiber alignment as a key factor contributing to peak sprout velocities and in mediating cell shape and orientation. We also quantify the effects of proteolytic matrix degradation by the tip cell on sprout velocity and demonstrate that degradation promotes sprout growth at high matrix densities, but has an inhibitory effect at lower densities. Our results are discussed in the context of ECM targeted pro- and anti-angiogenic therapies that can be tested empirically

    Inhibition of alveolar macrophage 5-lipoxygenase metabolism by auranofin

    We have examined the effect of the oral gold compound auranofin (AF) on calcium ionophore A23187-induced arachidonic acid metabolism in the rat alveolar macrophage. Both reverse-phase high performance liquid Chromatographie and radioimmunoassay analyses revealed that AF dose-dependently inhibited leukotriene B4 and 5-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid synthesis in a parallel fashion with an 50 ~ 4.3 [mu]g/ml. At the same time, AF augmented A23187-induced arachidonate release and cyclooxy-genase metabolism. A possible mechanism for the inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase was suggested by the capacity of AF to dose-dependently deplete ATP (50 ~ 5.9 [mu]g/ml), a cofactor for 5-lipoxygenase. These data indicate that, at therapeutic concentrations, AF acts in vitro as a selective inhibitor of macrophage 5-lipoxygenase metabolism.     Teaching evidence-based management with a focus on producing local evidence

    We present an approach to teaching evidence-based management (EBMgt) that trains future managers how to produce local evidence. Local evidence is causally interpretable data, collected on-site in companies to address a specific business problem. Our teaching method is a variant of problem-based learning, a method originally developed to teach evidence-based medicine. Following this method, students learn an evidence-based problem-solving cycle for addressing actual business cases. Executing this cycle, students use and produce scientific evidence through literature searches and the design of local, experimental tests of causal hypotheses. We argue the value of teaching EBMgt with a focus on producing local evidence, how it can be taught, and what can be taught. We conclude by outlining our contribution to the literature on teaching EBMgt and by discussing limitations of our approach
