Clifford Uyeda Interview, February 19, 1988

    No full text
Doctor Clifford Uyeda discusses his work, beginning in the 1950s, to obtain a presidential pardon for Iva Toguri, indicted by the U.S. government as “Tokyo Rose.” He recounts Toguri’s plight during World War Two, as an American citizen stuck in Japan, and her struggle to find work. As a typist for Radio Tokyo, Uyeda explains how Toguri read scripts written by Australian prisoner of war, Major Charles Cousens, and American prisoner of war Ted Ince. The broadcasts were designed as anti-propaganda, which was why Toguri agreed to take part. Uyeda recalls his campaign to get the American public on Toguri’s side to pressure President Gerald Ford to grant Toguri a pardon, which he did in 1977.
