.Hablar de instituciones se ha convertido en hablar de crisis de las instituciones. En este sentido, la noción de desinstitucionalización ocupa un lugar relevante en la reflexión institucional. Por este motivo, en este artÃculo se lleva a cabo una revisión del concepto de institución y de las principales crÃticas que ha recibido como paso previo al análisis más detallado del fenómeno desinstitucionalizador en la práctica psiquiátrica. Tal análisis lleva a la elaboración de una propuesta alternativa que cuestiona la pertinencia de seguir hablando de instituciones asà como de procesos desinstitucionalizadores. For this reason, this article carries out a review of the concept of institution and the main criticisms that it has received as a previous step to a more detailed examination of the disinstitutionalizing phenomenon, in the framework of psychiatric experience. Such an examination leads to the making of an alternative proposal which questions the pertinence of keeping speaking of both institutions and disinstutionalizing processes. Influence of phenological barriers and habitat differentiation on the population genetic structure of the balearic endemic Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris Chodat and R. alaternus L
[EN] Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris, endemic to the Gymnesian Islands, coexists with the related and widespread R. alaternus in Mallorca and Menorca. In both species, the population genetic structure using RAPD, and flowering during a 3-year period to check for possible phenological barriers, were analyzed. Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris showed lower genetic diversity and stronger population structure than R. alaternus, the Cabrera population being less diverse and the most differentiated. Rhamnus ludovici-salvatoris flowered one month later, although flowering of both species coincided sporadically. These congeners seem to have diverged through isolation by time and differentiation in habitat. The population genetic structure of R. ludovici-salvatoris could mainly be due to the existence of small populations on the one hand, and a gene flow caused by rare hybridization events on the other, which may also explain the presence of morphologically intermediate individuals in Menorca. Fungal infestation boosts fruit aroma and fruit removal by mammals and birds
For four decades, an influential hypothesis has posited that competition for food resources between
microbes and vertebrates selects for microbes to alter these resources in ways that make them
unpalatable to vertebrates. We chose an understudied cross kingdom interaction to experimentally
evaluate the effect of fruit infection by fungi on both vertebrate (mammals and birds) fruit preferences
and on ecologically relevant fruit traits (volatile compounds, toughness, etc). Our well-replicated field
experiments revealed that, in contrast to previous studies, frugivorous mammals and birds consistently
preferred infested over intact fruits. This was concordant with the higher level of attractive volatiles
(esters, ethanol) in infested fruits. This investigation suggests that vertebrate frugivores, fleshyfruited
plants, and microbes form a tripartite interaction in which each part could interact positively
with the other two (e.g. both orange seeds and fungal spores are likely dispersed by mammals). Such
a mutualistic view of these complex interactions is opposed to the generalized idea of competition
between frugivorous vertebrates and microorganisms. Thus, this research provides a new perspective
on the widely accepted plant evolutionary dilemma to make fruits attractive to mutualistic frugivores

Ecosystem restoration strengthens pollination network resilience and function.
Land degradation results in declining biodiversity and the disruption of ecosystem functioning worldwide, particularly in the tropics. Vegetation restoration is a common tool used to mitigate these impacts and increasingly aims to restore ecosystem functions rather than species diversity. However, evidence from community experiments on the effect of restoration practices on ecosystem functions is scarce. Pollination is an important ecosystem function and the global decline in pollinators attenuates the resistance of natural areas and agro-environments to disturbances. Thus, the ability of pollination functions to resist or recover from disturbance (that is, the functional resilience) may be critical for ensuring a successful restoration process. Here we report the use of a community field experiment to investigate the effects of vegetation restoration, specifically the removal of exotic shrubs, on pollination. We analyse 64 plant-pollinator networks and the reproductive performance of the ten most abundant plant species across four restored and four unrestored, disturbed mountaintop communities. Ecosystem restoration resulted in a marked increase in pollinator species, visits to flowers and interaction diversity. Interactions in restored networks were more generalized than in unrestored networks, indicating a higher functional redundancy in restored communities. Shifts in interaction patterns had direct and positive effects on pollination, especially on the relative and total fruit production of native plants. Pollinator limitation was prevalent at unrestored sites only, where the proportion of flowers producing fruit increased with pollinator visitation, approaching the higher levels seen in restored plant communities. Our results show that vegetation restoration can improve pollination, suggesting that the degradation of ecosystem functions is at least partially reversible. The degree of recovery may depend on the state of degradation before restoration intervention and the proximity to pollinator source populations in the surrounding landscape. Does Landscape Fragmentation Influence Sex Ratio of Dioecious Plants? A Case Study of Pistacia chinensis in the Thousand-Island Lake Region of China
The Thousand-Island Lake region in Zhejiang Province, China is a highly fragmented landscape with a clear point-in-time of fragmentation as a result of flooding to form the reservoir. Islands in the artificial lake were surveyed to examine how population sex ratio of a dioecious plant specie Pistacia chinensis B. was affected by landscape fragmentation. A natural population on the mainland near the lake was also surveyed for comparison. Population size, sex ratio and diameter at breast height (DBH) of individuals were measured over 2 years. More than 1,500 individuals, distributed in 31 populations, were studied. Soil nitrogen in the different populations was measured to identify the relationship between sex ratio and micro-environmental conditions. In accordance with the results of many other reports on biased sex ratio in relation to environmental gradient, we found that poor soil nitrogen areas fostered male-biased populations. In addition, the degree of sex ratio bias increased with decreasing population size and population connectivity. The biased sex ratios were only found in younger individuals (less than 50 years old) in small populations, while a stable 1∶1 sex ratio was found in the large population on the mainland. We concluded that the effects of landscape fragmentation on the dioecious population sex ratio were mainly achieved in relation to changing soil nitrogen conditions in patches and pollen limitation within and among populations. Large populations could maintain a more suitable environment in terms of nutrient conditions and pollen flow, subsequently maintaining a stable sex ratio in dioecious plant populations. Habitat specificity of a threatened and endemic cliff-dwelling halophyte

patterns. In these environments, rapidly changing gradients require highly specialized plants like halophytes.
In European coastal cliff-tops, rocky and sandy seashores, and saltmarshes, typical halophytes from the genus
Limonium are commonly found. Among them, the aneuploid tetraploid (2n ¼ 4x ¼ 35, 36, 37) Limonium multiflorum,
endemic to the west coast of Portugal, is an interesting case study for investigating the ecology and conservation
of a halophyte agamospermic species. Although it is listed in the IUCN red list of threatened species,
information on its population size or rarity, as well as its ecology, in some respects is still unknown. Field surveys
in the largest known population were performed (Raso cape, Portugal) in order to determine habitat requirements
and conservation status. A total of 88 quadrats were monitored, 43 of which contained at least one L. multiflorum
individual. For each sampled quadrat, four abiotic and four biotic variables as well as two spatially derived variables
were recorded. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed narrow habitat specificity for this species
which appeared to be intolerant to competition with invasive alien plants. We conclude that in situ conservation
in a local ‘hotspot’ of this rare and vulnerable species emerges as a priority in order to ensure that biodiversity is not los
Effect of invader removal: pollinators stay but some native plants miss their new friend
Removal of invasive species often benefits
biological diversity allowing ecosystems’ recovery.
However, it is important to assess the functional roles
that invaders may have established in their new areas
to avoid unexpected results from species elimination.
Invasive animal-pollinated plants may affect the
plant–pollination interactions by changing pollinator
availability and/or behaviour in the community. Thus,
removal of an invasive plant may have important
effects on pollinator community that may then be
reflected positive or negatively on the reproductive
success of native plants. The objective of this study
was to assess the effect of removing Oxalis pescaprae,
an invasive weed widely spread in the
Mediterranean basin, on plant–pollinator interactions
and on the reproductive success of co-flowering native
plants. For this, a disturbed area in central Portugal,
where this species is highly abundant, was selected.
Visitation rates, natural pollen loads, pollen tube
growth and natural fruit set of native plants were
compared in the presence of O. pes-caprae and after
manual removal of their flowers. Our results showed a
highly resilient pollination network but also revealed
some facilitative effects of O. pes-caprae on the
reproductive success of co-flowering native plants.
Reproductive success of the native plants seems to
depend not only on the number and diversity of floral
visitors, but also on their efficiency as pollinators. The
information provided on the effects of invasive species
on the sexual reproductive success of natives is
