At Face Value: Visual Antecedents of Impression Formation in Servicescapes
Consumers may base employee impressions on physical appearance\ud
and displayed personal objects. In a scenario experiment,\ud
using photos of a physician and a 360-degree panorama of his\ud
consultation room, we examined the effects of appearance and\ud
tangibles on impression formation. Study 1 shows that observers\ud
employ various strategies of combining information from different\ud
sources when forming an impression of the employee’s friendliness\ud
and competence. Whereas previous research has shown that impression\ud
formation based on personal appearances proceeds in an\ud
automatic fashion, the findings of study 2 indicate that impression\ud
formation grounded in the perception of tangibles requires more\ud
elaborate processin
Values and preferences of men for undergoing prostate-specific antigen screening for prostate cancer: a systematic review
To investigate men's values and preferences regarding prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer. Systematic review. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and grey literature up to 2 September 2017. Primary studies of men's values and preferences regarding the benefits and harms of PSA screening. Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed risk of bias with a modified version of a risk of bias tool for values and preferences studies, the International Patient Decision Aid Standards instrument V.3 and the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool. We identified 4172 unique citations, of which 11 studies proved eligible. Five studies investigated PSA screening using a direct choice study design, whereas six used decisions aids displaying patient-important outcomes. The direct choice studies used different methodologies and varied considerably in the reporting of outcomes. Two studies suggested that men were willing to forego screening with a small benefit in prostate cancer mortality if it would decrease the likelihood of unnecessary treatment or biopsies. In contrast, one study reported that men were willing to accept a substantial overdiagnosis to reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality. Among the six studies involving decision aids, willingness to undergo screening varied substantially from 37% when displaying a hypothetical reduction in mortality of 10 per 1000 men, to 44% when displaying a reduction in mortality of 7 per 1000. We found no studies that specifically investigated whether values and preferences differed among men with family history, of African descent or with lower socioeconomic levels. The variability of men's values and preferences reflect that the decision to screen is highly preference sensitive. Magnetic rogue wave in a perpendicular anisotropic ferromagnetic nanowire with spin-transfer torque
We present the current controlled motion of dynamic soliton embedded in spin
wave background in ferromagnetic nanowire. With the stronger breather character
we get the novel magnetic rogue wave and clarify its formation mechanism. The
generation of magnetic rogue wave is mainly arose from the accumulation of
energy and magnons toward to its central part. We also observe that the
spin-polarized current can control the exchange rate of magnons between
envelope soliton and background, and the critical current condition is obtained
analytically. Even more interesting is that the spin-transfer torque plays the
completely opposite role for the cases of below and above the critical value.Comment: 5 figure
Magnetic Field Measurement with Ground State Alignment
Observational studies of magnetic fields are crucial. We introduce a process
"ground state alignment" as a new way to determine the magnetic field direction
in diffuse medium. The alignment is due to anisotropic radiation impinging on
the atom/ion. The consequence of the process is the polarization of spectral
lines resulting from scattering and absorption from aligned atomic/ionic
species with fine or hyperfine structure. The magnetic field induces precession
and realign the atom/ion and therefore the polarization of the emitted or
absorbed radiation reflects the direction of the magnetic field. The atoms get
aligned at their low levels and, as the life-time of the atoms/ions we deal
with is long, the alignment induced by anisotropic radiation is susceptible to
extremely weak magnetic fields (G). In fact,
the effects of atomic/ionic alignment were studied in the laboratory decades
ago, mostly in relation to the maser research. Recently, the atomic effect has
been already detected in observations from circumstellar medium and this is a
harbinger of future extensive magnetic field studies. A unique feature of the
atomic realignment is that they can reveal the 3D orientation of magnetic
field. In this article, we shall review the basic physical processes involved
in atomic realignment. We shall also discuss its applications to
interplanetary, circumstellar and interstellar magnetic fields. In addition,
our research reveals that the polarization of the radiation arising from the
transitions between fine and hyperfine states of the ground level can provide a

Multiple Andreev Reflection and Giant Excess Noise in Diffusive Superconductor/Normal-Metal/Superconductor Junctions
We have studied superconductor/normal metal/superconductor (SNS) junctions
consisting of short Au or Cu wires between Nb or Al banks. The Nb based
junctions display inherent electron heating effects induced by the high thermal
resistance of the NS boundaries. The Al based junctions show in addition
subharmonic gap structures in the differential conductance dI/dV and a
pronounced peak in the excess noise at very low voltages V. We suggest that the
noise peak is caused by fluctuations of the supercurrent at the onset of
Josephson coupling between the superconducting banks. At intermediate
temperatures where the supercurrent is suppressed a noise contribution ~1/V
remains, which may be interpreted as shot noise originating from large multiple

Population dynamics in compressible flows
Organisms often grow, migrate and compete in liquid environments, as well as
on solid surfaces. However, relatively little is known about what happens when
competing species are mixed and compressed by fluid turbulence. In these
lectures we review our recent work on population dynamics and population
genetics in compressible velocity fields of one and two dimensions. We discuss
why compressible turbulence is relevant for population dynamics in the ocean
and we consider cases both where the velocity field is turbulent and when it is
static. Furthermore, we investigate populations in terms of a continuos density
field and when the populations are treated via discrete particles. In the last
case we focus on the competition and fixation of one species compared to

Phone tokenisers are used in spoken language recognition (SLR) to obtain elementary
phonetic information. We present a study on the use of deep neural
network tokenisers. Unsupervised crosslingual adaptation was performed to
adapt the baseline tokeniser trained on English conversational telephone speech
data to different languages. Two training and adaptation approaches, namely
cross-entropy adaptation and state-level minimum Bayes risk adaptation, were
tested in a bottleneck i-vector and a phonotactic SLR system. The SLR systems
using the tokenisers adapted to different languages were combined using score
fusion, giving 7-18% reduction in minimum detection cost function (minDCF)
compared with the baseline configurations without adapted tokenisers. Analysis
of results showed that the ensemble tokenisers gave diverse representation of
phonemes, thus bringing complementary effects when SLR systems with different
tokenisers were combined. SLR performance was also shown to be related
to the quality of the adapted tokenisers

A measurement of the tau mass and the first CPT test with tau leptons
We measure the mass of the tau lepton to be 1775.1+-1.6(stat)+-1.0(syst.) MeV
using tau pairs from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of
the positively and negatively charged tau leptons. The relative mass difference

Blood-based metabolic signatures in Alzheimer's disease
Introduction Identification of blood-based metabolic changes might provide early and easy-to-obtain biomarkers. Methods We included 127 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 121 control subjects with cerebrospinal fluid biomarker-confirmed diagnosis (cutoff tau/amyloid β peptide 42: 0.52). Mass spectrometry platforms determined the concentrations of 53 amine compounds, 22 organic acid compounds, 120 lipid compounds, and 40 oxidative stress compounds. Multiple signatures were assessed: differential expression (nested linear models), classification (logistic regression), and regulatory (network extraction). Results Twenty-six metabolites were differentially expressed. Metabolites improved the classification performance of clinical variables from 74% to 79%. Network models identified five hubs of metabolic dysregulation: tyrosine, glycylglycine, glutamine, lysophosphatic acid C18:2, and platelet-activating factor C16:0. The metabolite network for apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 negative AD patients was less cohesive compared with the network for APOE ε4 positive AD patients. Discussion Multiple signatures point to various promising peripheral markers for further validation.
