Bumblebee family lineage survival is enhanced in high quality landscapes
Insect pollinators such as bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are in global decline1,2, a major cause of which is habitat loss due to agricultural intensification3. A range of global and national initiatives aimed at restoring pollinator habitats and populations have been developed4-6. However, the success of these initiatives depends critically upon understanding how landscape change affects key population-level parameters, such as survival between lifecycle stages7, in target species. Such understanding is lacking for bumblebees because of the difficulty of systematically finding and monitoring colonies in the wild. We used a novel combination of habitat manipulation, land-use and habitat surveys, molecular genetics8 and demographic and spatial modelling to examine between-year survival of family lineages in field populations of three bumblebee species. Here we show that the survival of family lineages from the summer worker to the spring queen stage in the following year increases significantly with the proportion of high-value foraging habitat, including spring floral resources, within 250-1000 m of the natal colony. This is the first evidence of a positive impact of habitat quality on survival and persistence between successive colony cycle stages in bumblebee populations. The findings provide strong support for conservation interventions that increase floral resources at a landscape scale and throughout the season having positive effects on wild pollinators in agricultural landscapes

Effects of habitat composition and landscape structure on worker foraging distances of five bumblebee species
Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important pollinators of both crops and wild flowers. Their contribution to this essential ecosystem service has been threatened over recent decades by changes in land use, which have led to declines in their populations. In order to design effective conservation measures it is important to understand the effects of variation in landscape composition and structure on the foraging activities of worker bumblebees. This is because the viability of individual colonies is likely to be affected by the trade-off between the energetic costs of foraging over greater distances and the potential gains from access to additional resources. We used field surveys, molecular genetics and fine resolution remote sensing to estimate the locations of wild bumblebee nests and to infer foraging distances across a 20 km2 agricultural landscape in southern England. We investigated five species, including the rare B. ruderatus and ecologically similar but widespread B. hortorum. We compared worker foraging distances between species and examined how variation in landscape composition and structure affected foraging distances at the colony level. Mean worker foraging distances differed significantly between species. Bombus terrestris, B. lapidarius and B. ruderatus exhibited significantly greater mean foraging distances (551 m, 536 m, 501 m, respectively) than B. hortorum and B. pascuorum (336 m, 272 m, respectively). There was wide variation in worker foraging distances between colonies of the same species, which was in turn strongly influenced by the amount and spatial configuration of available foraging habitats. Shorter foraging distances were found for colonies where the local landscape had high coverage and low fragmentation of semi-natural vegetation, including managed agri-environmental field margins. The strength of relationships between different landscape variables and foraging distance varied between species, for example the strongest relationship for B. ruderatus being with floral cover of preferred forage plants. Our findings suggest that favourable landscape composition and configuration has the potential to minimise foraging distances across a range of bumblebee species. There is thus potential for improvements in the design and implementation of landscape management options, such as agri-environment schemes, aimed at providing foraging habitat for bumblebees and enhancing crop pollination services

Revisiting Consumer Ethnocentrism: Review, Reconceptualization, and Empirical Testing
Prior research has suggested that many consumers prefer domestic to foreign products, even when the quality is lower and the price is higher. Such bias is attributed to consumer ethnocentrism. This study critically examines the current conceptualizations of consumer ethnocentrism and proposes an extension of its conceptual boundaries and measurement. It determines that consumer ethnocentrism is a multidimensional construct that encompasses five dimensions: prosociality, cognition, insecurity, reflexiveness, and habituation. Empirical evidence from the United Kingdom and the United States demonstrates that the extended measurement instrument better predicts consumers' preferences for local brands at the expense of foreign brands
An energetic stellar outburst accompanied by circumstellar light echoes
Some classes of stars, including supernovae and novae, undergo explosive
outbursts that eject stellar material into space. In 2002, the previously
unknown variable star V838 Monocerotis brightened suddenly by a factor of about
10^4. Unlike a supernova or nova, V838 Mon did not explosively eject its outer
layers; rather, it simply expanded to become a cool supergiant with a
moderate-velocity stellar wind. Superluminal light echoes were discovered as
light from the outburst propagated into surrounding, pre-existing circumstellar
dust. Here we report high-resolution imaging and polarimetry of the light
echoes, which allow us to set direct geometric distance limits to the object.
At a distance of >6 kpc, V838 Mon at its maximum brightness was temporarily the
brightest star in the Milky Way. The presence of the circumstellar dust implies
that previous eruptions have occurred, and spectra show it to be a binary
system. When combined with the high luminosity and unusual outburst behavior,
these characteristics indicate that V838 Mon represents a hitherto unknown type
of stellar outburst, for which we have no completely satisfactory physical

V838 Monocerotis: A Geometric Distance from Hubble Space Telescope Polarimetric Imaging of its Light Echo
Following the outburst of the unusual variable star V838 Monocerotis in 2002,
a spectacular light echo appeared. A light echo provides the possibility of
direct geometric distance determination, because it should contain a ring of
highly linearly polarized light at a linear radius of ct, where t is the time
since the outburst. We present imaging polarimetry of the V838 Mon light echo,
obtained in 2002 and 2005 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the
Hubble Space Telescope, which confirms the presence of the highly polarized
ring. Based on detailed modeling that takes into account the outburst light
curve, the paraboloidal echo geometry, and the physics of dust scattering and
polarization, we find a distance of 6.1+-0.6 kpc. The error is dominated by the
systematic uncertainty in the scattering angle of maximum linear polarization,
taken to be theta_{max}=90^o +- 5^o. The polarimetric distance agrees
remarkably well with a distance of 6.2+-1.5 kpc obtained from the entirely
independent method of main-sequence fitting to a sparse star cluster associated
with V838 Mon. At this distance, V838 Mon at maximum light had M_V\simeq-9.8,
making it temporarily one of the most luminous stars in the Local Group. Our
validation of the polarimetric method offers promise for measurement of

Profiling of spatial metabolite distributions in wheat leaves under normal and nitrate limiting conditions
The control and interaction between nitrogen and carbon assimilatory pathways is essential in both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic tissue in order to support metabolic processes without compromising growth. Physiological differences between the basal and mature region of wheat (Triticum aestivum) primary leaves confirmed that there was a change from heterotrophic to autotrophic metabolism. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy confirmed the suitability and phenotypic reproducibility of the leaf growth conditions. Principal Component–Discriminant Function Analysis (PC–DFA) revealed distinct clustering between base, and tip sections of the developing wheat leaf, and from plants grown in the presence or absence of nitrate. Gas Chromatography-Time of Flight/Mass Spectrometry (GC-TOF/MS) combined with multivariate and univariate analyses, and Bayesian network (BN) analysis, distinguished different tissues and confirmed the physiological switch from high rates of respiration to photosynthesis along the leaf. The operation of nitrogen metabolism impacted on the levels and distribution of amino acids, organic acids and carbohydrates within the wheat leaf. In plants grown in the presence of nitrate there was reduced levels of a number of sugar metabolites in the leaf base and an increase in maltose levels, possibly reflecting an increase in starch turnover. The value of using this combined metabolomics analysis for further functional investigations in the future are discussed
