    Quantitative reconstruction of primary productivity in low latitudes during the last glacial maximum and the mid-to-late Holocene from a global Florisphaera profunda calibration dataset

    [EN]Ocean net primary productivity (Npp) is a key component of the marine carbon cycle. Multi-model Npp projections based on a few decades of satellite data show large uncertainties, in particular at low latitudes (30°N−30°S). Calibration of sedimentary proxies with satellite-based Npp estimates allows for the quantitative reconstruction of this variable at longer time-scales. Relative abundance of deep-photic zone coccolithophore species Florisphaera profunda in the fossil record can potentially be used as a quantitative proxy for Npp. However, the robustness of this proxy calibration has been tested in very specific oceanographic settings using surface sediment samples. Here, we use a global dataset of surface sediment (n = 1258) and sediment trap (n = 26) samples with relative abundance data of F. profunda (%) to test the robustness of this proxy as a quantitative indicator of Npp. We study the modern and paleo-ecology of this species and the main factors affecting its latitudinal distribution. Results show that F. profunda % is a strong indicator of Npp at latitudes between 30°N and 30°S, while at higher latitudes temperature-related variables are more important. We develop a global calibration model between satellite Npp estimates and F. profunda for the latitudinal range between 30°N and 30°S, and we apply it to several low-latitude sediment cores with available F. profunda counts covering the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM; 24–19 ka) and the Mid-to-Late Holocene period (MLH; <6 ka). Reconstructed Npp during the LGM is 15% higher than during the MLHdue to the intensification of trade winds that enhanced oceanic upwelling at low latitudes

    Measurement of the Michel Parameters in Leptonic Tau Decays

    The Michel parameters of the leptonic tau decays are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The Michel parameters are extracted from the energy spectra of the charged decay leptons and from their energy-energy correlations. A new method involving a global likelihood fit of Monte Carlo generated events with complete detector simulation and background treatment has been applied to the data recorded at center-of-mass energies close to sqrt(s) = M(Z) corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 155 pb-1 during the years 1990 to 1995. If e-mu universality is assumed and inferring the tau polarization from neutral current data, the measured Michel parameters are extracted. Limits on non-standard coupling constants and on the masses of new gauge bosons are obtained.     Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration

    Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.Comment: 510 authors, 127 pages text, 56 figures, 1 tables, LaTeX.     Inclusive production of charged hadrons and Ks0K_{s}^{0} mesons in photon-photon collisions

    The production of charged hadrons and K_s mesons in the collisions of quasi-real photons has been measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The data were taken at e+e- centre-of-mass energies of 161 and 172 GeV. The differential cross-sections as a function of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the charged hadrons and K_s mesons have been compared to the leading order Monte Carlo simulations of PHOJET and PYTHIA and to perturbative next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. The distributions have been measured in the range 10-125 GeV of the hadronic invariant mass W.     A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the MSSM and models with two scalar field doublets

    A search is described for the neutral Higgs bosons h^0 and A^0 predicted by models with two scalar field doublets and, in particular, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The search in the Z^0 h^0 and h^0 A^0 production channels is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 pb^{-1} from e^+e^- collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 130 and 172GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The observation of a number of candidates consistent with Standard Model background expectations is used in combination with earlier results from data collected at the Z^0 resonance to set limits on m_h and m_A in general models with two scalar field doublets and in the MSSM. For example, in the MSSM, for tan(beta) > 1, minimal and maximal scalar top quark mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV, the 95% confidence level limits m_h > 59.0 GeV and m_A > 59.5 GeV are obtained.     Saturation of azimuthal anisotropy in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62 - 200 GeV

    New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (p_T) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (v_2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, v_2(p_T), change very little over the collision energy range sqrt(s_NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for v_2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for sqrt(s_NN) = 62-200 GeV.Comment: 432 authors, 7 pages text, 4 figures, REVTeX4.     Separation of monospecific and restricted coccolith assemblages from sediments using differential settling velocity.

    Techniques are described to allow concentration of individual coccolith species from sediment samples, for geochemical analysis. Simple repeated decanting and density-stratified settling columns permit separation of sediment fractions whose carbonate is highly dominated (> 70% but in most cases > 90%) by coccoliths from a single species. In each of six different core top sediments from different oceanographic settings, we were able to separate two or more fractions dominated by different species, although the species which can be effectively separated is highly dependent on the species makeup of the original sample. Isolates were obtained of Calcidiscus leptoporus, Helicosphaera carterae, Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Emiliania huxleyi, and Florisphaera profunda. The deep photic zone dweller F. profunda was isolated from all but one site, even where its initial abundance is very low. Separated fractions show a wide range of stable isotope ratios, up to 1.5 ‰ in
