    Propensity for developing coronary heart disease (CHD) is linked with Framingham-defined cardiovascular risk factors and elevated inflammatory biomarkers. Cardiovascular risk and inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated in ARIES, a Phase IIIb/IV clinical trial in which 515 antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected subjects initially received abacavir/lamivudine + atazanavir/ritonavir for 36 weeks.     The slippery idea of "spirituality" might, with care, be put to use by biblical exegetes. Spirituality is defined in this paper as the social enactment of religious ideas. Four categories are offered to analyze the biblical witness as a record of spirituality. These categories are, first, an ultimate end; second, an ideal self-image by which this end might be achieved; third, an encoding of teachings in Scripture by which the self-image can be realized or understood; and fourth, a proposal for a way of life that makes achievement of the ultimate end a practical possibility. Accordingly, Ezekiel's "spirituality" may be understood to have, on one hand, an ultimate end of a return of the people to the land with the presence of God; and on the other, an ideal self-image of conversion of the community toward this ultimate end. Then it encodes, in oracles of judgment and deliverance, teachings that enable adherents to form the ideal self-image, and finally, as a way of life that puts these teachings into practice, it proposes a "covenant of friendship" (Ezek 34:25 and 37:36) among the exiled people and between them and their captors.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66911/2/10.1177_014610799202200402.pd

    Kant, race, and natural history

    This article presents a new argument concerning the relation between Kant’s theory of race and aspects of the critical philosophy. It argues that Kant’s treatment of the problem of the systematic unity of nature and knowledge in the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of the Power of Judgment can be traced back a methodological problem in the natural history of the period – that of the possibility of a natural system of nature. Kant’s transformation of the methodological problem from natural history into a set of philosophical (and specifically epistemological) problems proceeds by way of the working out of his own problem in natural history – the problem of the natural history of the human races – and specifically the problem of the unity in diversity of the human species, in response to which he develops a theory of race. This theory of race is, further, the first developed model of the use of teleological judgment in Kant’s work. The article thus argues that Kant’s philosophical position on the systematic unity of nature and of knowledge in the first and third Critiques, and his account and defense of teleological judgment, are developed out of problems first articulated in his solution to the problem of the unity in diversity of the human species – that is, in his theory of race. The article does not seek to establish that these aspects of the critical philosophy are therefore racialised. But it does demonstrate, against those who deny its salience to his philosophy, how the problem of the unity in diversity of the human species and Kant’s theory of race is significant for the development of aspects of the critical philosophy and thus contributes to their philosophical problematics

    Changes in axonal excitability of primary sensory afferents with general anaesthesia in humans

    BACKGROUND: Intraoperative monitoring of neuronal function is important in a variety of surgeries. The type of general anaesthetic used can affect the interpretation and quality of such recordings. Although the principal effects of general anaesthetics are synaptically mediated, the extent to which they affect excitability of the peripheral afferent nervous system is unclear. METHODS: Forty subjects were randomized in a stratified manner into two groups, anaesthetized with either propofol or sevoflurane. The threshold tracking technique (QTRAC(®)) was used to measure nerve excitability parameters of the sensory action potential of the median nerve before and after induction of general anaesthesia. RESULTS: Several parameters of peripheral sensory afferent nerve excitability changed after induction of general anaesthesia, which were similar for both propofol and sevoflurane. The maximum amplitude of the sensory nerve action potential decreased in both groups (propofol: 25.3%; sevoflurane: 29.5%; both P<0.01). The relative refractory period [mean (sd)] also decreased similarly in both groups [propofol: -0.6 (0.7) ms; sevoflurane: -0.3 (0.5) ms; both P<0.01]. Skin temperature at the stimulation site increased significantly in both groups [propofol: +1.2 (1.0)°C; sevoflurane: +1.7 (1.4)°C; both P<0.01]. CONCLUSIONS: Small changes in excitability of primary sensory afferents after the induction of anaesthesia with propofol or sevoflurane were detected. These effects, which were non-specific and are possibly explained by changes observed in temperature, demonstrate possible anaesthetic effects on intraoperative neuromonitoring

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission from patients with drug-resistant compared to drug-susceptible TB: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    The extent to which drug-resistant (DR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains cause infection and progression to tuberculosis (TB) disease in comparison to drug-susceptible (DS) strains is unknown. Studies in guinea pigs and in vitro experiments have suggested a reduced fitness of organisms that harbour mutations that confer drug resistance [1, 2]; it was therefore believed that transmitted drug resistance was a rare event. However, more recent work using molecular typing has shown transmission events occurring in the context of DR-TB [3]. Understanding the risk of transmission, infection and progression to disease in the context of DR-TB is important to guide control measures and help predict the evolution and magnitude of the multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB epidemic. Hence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess whether M. tuberculosis transmission and progression to TB disease (risk/rate of M. tuberculosis infection in all contacts, risk/rate of TB disease in all contacts and risk/rate of TB disease in infected contacts) differ between DR- and DS-TB

    The role of financial analysts in stock market efficiency with respect to annual earnings and its cash and accrual components

    This study examines biases in stock prices and financial analysts\u27 earnings forecasts. These biases take the form of systematic overweighting or underweighting of the persistence characteristics of cash versus accrual earnings components. Our evidence suggests that stock prices tend to overweight and financial analysts tend to underweight these persistence characteristics. Furthermore, we find that analysts\u27 underweighting attenuates stock price overweighting. However, we find little evidence that the overweighting in stock prices attenuates analyst underweighting. This study brings a new perspective to the literature regarding the disciplining role of financial analysts in capital markets

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
