    Get PDF
Objectives: The present study reports a case of late mandibular fracture due to third molar extraction and highlights the inherent clinical, ethical and legal aspects related to this surgical complication. Material and Methods: A female patient underwent surgical procedure for the extraction of the mandibular right third molar. Two days after the surgery the patient reported pain and altered occlusion in the right side of the mandible. After clinical and radiographic re-examination, the diagnosis of late mandibular fracture was established. A second surgery, under general anaesthesia, was performed for the fixation of the mandibular bone. Results: The fractured parts were reduced and fixed with locking plate systems and 2 mm screws following load-sharing principles. The masticatory function showed optimal performance within 7 and 21 days after the surgery. Complete bone healing was observed within 1 year of follow-up. Conclusions: For satisfactory surgical outcomes, adequate surgical planning and techniques must be performed. Signed informed consents explaining the risks and benefits of the treatment must be used to avoid ethical and legal disputes in dentistry

Autism is a disorder that presents massive developmental prejudices, affecting drastically the family’s environment. There are many studies about the influences of autism in the parents and autistic children relationship but there are not many references related to the siblings. This study aimed to comprehend the living experience of autistics siblings. A qualitative methodology was carried out using semi-structured interviews as a tool to collect data. The participants were five youngsters of autistics siblings. Content analysis was used to discuss the data.  The knowledge about the autistic disorder; relationship, feelings and worries related to the sibling with autism; and the changes on family life were the main themes analyzed. The results showed that the participants were not aware of the autistic sibling´s condition because there was not enough information for them. Significantly changes had occurred in the family´s routine, the siblings were not able to do some activities due the autistic sibling condition. They suffer discrimination concerning the autistic sibling. Most participants worried about the responsibility for the autistic in the future. It is crucial to develop policies aiming to help the autistic siblings.

Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Seven lineages have been identified based on different molecular markers, namely TcI, TcII, TcIII, TcIV, TcV, TcVI, and TcBat. Dogs play the role of epidemiological sentinels being domestic reservoirs of T. cruzi. The aim of the current study was to report the first case of CD in a domestic dog in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, infected with T. cruzi DTU TcIV. We hope our report encourages veterinarians and surveillance professionals to a take a deeper look at T. cruzi infection in domestic animals.publishersversionpublishe

Taking the pulse of Earth's tropical forests using networks of highly distributed plots

Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests.Additional co-authors: Susan Laurance, William Laurance, Francoise Yoko Ishida, Andrew Marshall, Catherine Waite, Hannsjoerg Woell, Jean-Francois Bastin, Marijn Bauters, Hans Beeckman, Pfascal Boeckx, Jan Bogaert, Charles De Canniere, Thales de Haulleville, Jean-Louis Doucet, Olivier Hardy, Wannes Hubau, Elizabeth Kearsley, Hans Verbeeck, Jason Vleminckx, Steven W. Reparo ósseo utilizando enxerto de matriz orgânica bovina: análise histológica em calvária de coelhos

    Get PDF
Xenogenic graft of bone origin has been used to favor bone regeneration and to reduce autogenous bone needs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bone repair induced by particulate bovine organic bone grafted in rabbit calvaria. Two standardized bone defects were prepared in both parietal of 20 adult rabbits. The defects were filled by clot, autograft, medular organic bovine bone or cortical organic bovine bone. Thirty days following surgery animals were killed; the calvaria were removed, fixed in formol, demineralized in EDTA and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections were stained in HE or Mallory Trichrome and analyzed by light microscope. On group filled with clot only the half of the defect was repaired by new bone tissue, which was formed from lesion border, central area presented cellular connective tissue. In defects filled with autograft almost all defect was repaired by bone tissue. Defects grafted with medular or cortical bovine bone exhibited near ¼ of defect filled by bone tissue, formed from border, with central area occupied by fibrous connective tissue. Almost all xenogenic grafts were reabsorbed, remaining few fragments that were associated to foreign body giant cell reaction and few showing bone neoformation around. Therefore, the graft of organic bovine bone, medular or cortical, used in an isolated way, didn't favor the process of bone repair.
