    Magnetic Field Application to Increase Yield of Microalgal Biomass in Biofuel Production

    Use of fuels from non-renewable sources has currently been considered unsustainable due to the exhaustion of supplies and environmental impacts caused by them. Climate change has concerned and triggered environmental policies that favor research on clean and renewable energy sources. Thus, production of third generation biofuels is a promising path in the biofuel industry. To yield this type of biofuels, microalgae should be highlighted because this raw material contains important biomolecules, such as carbohydrates and lipids. Technological approaches have been developed to improve microalgal cultivation under ecological conditions, such as light intensity, temperature, pH and concentrations of micro and macronutrients. Thus, magnetic field application to microalgal cultivation has become a viable alternative to obtain high yields of biomass concentration and accumulation of carbohydrates and lipids

    Synaptic Homeostasis and Restructuring across the Sleep-Wake Cycle

    Sleep is critical for hippocampus-dependent memory consolidation. However, the underlying mechanisms of synaptic plasticity are poorly understood. The central controversy is on whether long-term potentiation (LTP) takes a role during sleep and which would be its specific effect on memory. To address this question, we used immunohistochemistry to measure phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (pCaMKIIα) in the rat hippocampus immediately after specific sleep-wake states were interrupted. Control animals not exposed to novel objects during waking (WK) showed stable pCaMKIIα levels across the sleep-wake cycle, but animals exposed to novel objects showed a decrease during subsequent slow-wave sleep (SWS) followed by a rebound during rapid-eye-movement sleep (REM). The levels of pCaMKIIα during REM were proportional to cortical spindles near SWS/REM transitions. Based on these results, we modeled sleep-dependent LTP on a network of fully connected excitatory neurons fed with spikes recorded from the rat hippocampus across WK, SWS and REM. Sleep without LTP orderly rescaled synaptic weights to a narrow range of intermediate values. In contrast, LTP triggered near the SWS/REM transition led to marked swaps in synaptic weight ranking. To better understand the interaction between rescaling and restructuring during sleep, we implemented synaptic homeostasis and embossing in a detailed hippocampal-cortical model with both excitatory and inhibitory neurons. Synaptic homeostasis was implemented by weakening potentiation and strengthening depression, while synaptic embossing was simulated by evoking LTP on selected synapses. We observed that synaptic homeostasis facilitates controlled synaptic restructuring.     Non-visual exploration of novel objects increases the levels of plasticity factors in the rat primary visual cortex

    Background Historically, the primary sensory areas of the cerebral cortex have been exclusively associated with the processing of a single sensory modality. Yet the presence of tactile responses in the primary visual (V1) cortex has challenged this view, leading to the notion that primary sensory areas engage in cross-modal processing, and that the associated circuitry is modifiable by such activity. To explore this notion, here we assessed whether the exploration of novel objects in the dark induces the activation of plasticity markers in the V1 cortex of rats. Methods Adult rats were allowed to freely explore for 20 min a completely dark box with four novel objects of different shapes and textures. Animals were euthanized either 1 (n = 5) or 3 h (n = 5) after exploration. A control group (n = 5) was placed for 20 min in the same environment, but without the objects. Frontal sections of the brains were submitted to immunohistochemistry to measure protein levels of egr-1 and c-fos, and phosphorylated calcium-dependent kinase (pCaKMII) in V1 cortex. Results The amount of neurons labeled with monoclonal antibodies against c-fos, egr-1 or pCaKMII increased significantly in V1 cortex after one hour of exploration in the dark. Three hours after exploration, the number of labeled neurons decreased to basal levels. Conclusions Our results suggest that non-visual exploration induces the activation of immediate-early genes in V1 cortex, which is suggestive of cross-modal processing in this area. Besides, the increase in the number of neurons labeled with pCaKMII may signal a condition promoting synaptic plasticity

    Photography-based taxonomy is inadequate, unnecessary, and potentially harmful for biological sciences

    The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed by the Code has already been discussed in Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; Nemésio 2009a–b; Dubois 2009; Gentile & Snell 2009; Minelli 2009; Cianferoni & Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This question was again raised in a letter supported by 35 signatories published in the journal Nature (Pape et al. 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 September 2016, the following rebuttal (strictly limited to 300 words as per the editorial rules of Nature) was submitted to Nature, which on 18 October 2016 refused to publish it. As we think this problem is a very important one for zoological taxonomy, this text is published here exactly as submitted to Nature, followed by the list of the 493 taxonomists and collection-based researchers who signed it in the short time span from 20 September to 6 October 2016

    O repolho roxo é uma planta herbácea, originária do mediterrâneo, encontrada em todos os períodos do ano, contemplador de poucas calorias e rico em antocianina, um pigmento natural, de fácil extração, solúvel em água que confere a coloração vermelha a alimentos, podendo ser utilizado na indústria alimentícia em substituição aos corantes sintéticos. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo realizar a caracterização físico-química do repolho roxo e do seu extrato obtido por maceração em etanol 70% acidificado com HCl 1N e concentrado em evaporador rotatório com intuito de ser utilizado para a obtenção de um corante natural, possuidor de substância promissora na prevenção de doenças degenerativas como o câncer e doenças cardiovasculares. Foram determinados pH, acidez total titulável (ATT), sólidos solúveis(°Brix), atividade de água, umidade e cor . Tanto repolho roxo in natura quanto o seu extrato concentrado apresentou um elevado teor de água e baixa acidez, condições favorável ao desenvolvimento de microorganismo, houve perda na coloração vermelha na produção do extrato concentrado. </p

    A ricota é um produto de origem italiana, fabricada por meio deprecipitação ácida sob aquecimento para separação das proteínas do soro doleite. Este estudo tem como finalidade elaborarricotas e analisar alguns microrganismos indicadores de contaminação edeterioradores durante sua vida de prateleira, e avaliar sua aceitabilidadesensorial, contribuindo, deste modo, com informações que poderão auxiliar paraum melhor controle de qualidade e aceitação do produto.  Os resultados microbiológicos para contagemde bactérias aeróbias mesófilas foi elevada a partir do 6º dia de estocagem comvalores de 2,6 x 104 e 2,0 x 105, para ricota natural econdimentada com pimenta, respectivamente. A ricota com orégano apresentouníveis aceitável (1,5 x 104) até o 11º de estocagem. No 6º dia deestocagem todos os tratamentos apresentaram contagem elevada (6,0 x 104 a 2,5 x 105)para bactérias psicrotróficas. Para coliformes a 45ºC a ricota com pimentacalabresa apresentou nível acima do permitido ˃1.100, o mesmo ocorreu nosoutros tratamentos no 11º dia. A ricota natural e a ricota condimentada comorégano foram as mais aceitas, com notas de 7,4 e 7,7, respectivamente. Aricota condimentada com orégano teve uma vida de prateleira maior, devido àspropriedades antimicrobianas do orégano. Aricota natural e ricota condimentada com orégano obtiveram melhoraceitabilidade. A ricota com pimenta calabresa foi o menos aceita devido ànecessidade de uma reformulação para melhorar o sabor, já que esse é um marcodo produto e a principal influência de análise

    Diante da necessidade de se obter um produto de origem animal que venha contribuir com o equilíbrio nutricional, bem como incentivar o consumo de carnes de pescado e seus produtos derivados, objetivou-se com este trabalho a elaboração de 3 formulações de fishburgers de tilápia, visando aderir qualidade, valores nutricionais com adição de fibras, assim como praticidade e novos hábitos de alimentação a partir de um produto formulado artesanalmente, bem como realizar análises microbiológicas e sensoriais. As análises microbiológicas demonstraram que os fishburgers apresentaram-se de acordo com a Legislação vigente, com vida de prateleira de 21 dias. A contagem de bactérias mesófilas aeróbias apresentou valores entre 6,7×102 a 3,4×104UFC/g, os psicrotróficos oscilaram entre 1,0×103 UFC/g a 2,5×104 UFC/g e a enumeração de coliformes termotolerantes a 450C variou de &lt;3 a 240NMP/g. Porém a partir do 210 dia de congelamento a enumeração de coliformes apresentou contagens acima do permitido. O fishburger foi testado sensorialmente, pelo teste de aceitação identificando aprovação do produto elaborado, apresentando-se entre moderadamente e muito aceitos, não havendo preferência por um específico.     Description of the larva of Bromeliagrion rehni (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) with bionomic notes concerning its phytotelmic habitat in central Amazonas, Brazil

    A larva de último estádio de Bromeliagrion rehni Garrison in De Marmels & Garrison, 2005 é descrita e ilustrada e informações bionômicas sobre seu hábitat são apresentadas. O estudo foi conduzido na Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, localizada em Manaus, Amazonas, Brasil. Entre abril de 2003 e abril de 2005, foram realizadas 12 amostragens, seis no período chuvoso e seis no seco. Para cada amostragem, 12 bromélias de Guzmania brasiliensis Ule, 1907 (Bromeliaceae) foram analisadas, seis terrestres e seis epífitas, totalizando 144 amostras. Um total de 75 espécimes de B. rehni foi coletado. A relação entre a abundância das larvas e os parâmetros ambientais mensurados (volume (ml), pH, estação e estratificação) foi significativa (ANCOVA, F = 5,296, df = 130, p < 0,001). Larvas foram mais abundantes na estação chuvosa (p < 0,01) e o volume de água foi positivamente correlacionado com a abundância de B. rehni. A larva de B. rehni pode ser diferenciada da larva de B. fernandezianum, única espécie do gênero com larva descrita, pelo número de setas no premento e pelo padrão de coloração na região apical do fêmur. Pela primeira vez é reportada a associação dessa espécie com fitotelmata de Guzmania brasiliensis
