    Scaling effect in notched composites: The Discrete Ply Model approach

    Numerical and experimental investigations were carried out on the size effect in notched carbon/epoxy laminates. This paper presents a computational study of scaled open-hole tensile tests using the Discrete Ply Modeling (DPM) method, which has already proven efficient on both in-plane and out-of-plane loading cases, such as pull through, low velocity impact and compression after impact. The specificities of this finite element model are its discrete nature, the small number of parameters required and its robustness. Three different stacking sequences of thin plies coupled with three sizes of coupons having the same length to width ratio were tested. The results show that the model reflects the reduction in strength when the size of the specimen increases. The influence of different parameters such as mesh size, presence of discrete matrix cracks and fiber fracture toughness that should be used for clustered plies, are discussed. Comparisons with experiments demonstrate that tensile strengths, and failure scenarios and patterns are predicted with acceptable accuracy

    Experimental and numerical analysis of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer notched coupons under tensile loading

    The behavior of composite laminates subject to notch based stress concentrations is difficult to apprehend, especially the mechanisms of damage progression leading to total failure. Numerical and experimental investigations were carried out on three different stacking sequences of notched, thin ply carbon/epoxy laminates. This paper presents a computational study of notched tensile tests (U-notch) using the Discrete Ply Modeling (DPM) method, which has already proved efficient on both in-plane and out-of-plane loading cases, such as pull through, low velocity impact and compression after impact. The specificities of this finite element model are its discrete nature (interface elements to model delamination and matrix cracks), the small number of parameters required, and its robustness. This work follows on from the study of open-hole tensile tests (same three layups) by the same authors [1] and analyzes the influence of layup and notch shape. Comparisons with experiments (using infrared technology) demonstrate that tensile strengths, and failure scenarios and patterns are predicted with acceptable accuracy

    Validation and Modeling of Aeronautical Composite Structures Subjected to Combined Loadings: the VERTEX Project. Part 1: Experimental Setup, FE-DIC Instrumentation and Procedures

    The development and certification of aeronautical composite structures is still largely based on the pyramid of tests. This approach is extremely costly in terms of number of tests and design loops. Moreover, this is made up of uniaxial tests whereas the real structures are mostly subjected to combined forces. The aim of the collaborative research program "VERTEX" is to make progress towards Predictive Virtual Testing and to significantly reduce the development costs of aeronautical and space programs. In this first part, the specific methodology for multiaxial tests of aeronautical structures is presented. The concept of technical specimen and their size are justified. Then, the development of a specific test device is presented. Compression / traction, shear, internal pressure and any combination are possible. Since structural tests were complex to be instrumented, a specific method of field measurement was developed. It is based on multi-camera instrumentation and an original approach named Finite Element Stereo Digital Image Correlation (FE-SDIC). A mechanical regularization with the use of Finite Element (FE) of the optical field measurements allows to calculate the translation or rotation displacement field. Thus this measured field is used for boundary conditions of the VERTEX tests. The experimental procedure, the measurement methodologies and the calculation / test dialogue are validated on isotropic metal plates in this paper

    Validation and modeling of aeronautical composite structures subjected to combined loadings: The VERTEX project. Part 2: Load envelopes for the assessment of panels with large notches

    One of the important issues in the certification of composite aeronautical structures is large notches. In this paper, tests are carried out on technological specimens and under tensile, shear stresses and combined loadings using the VERTEX means presented in the first part of this publication. Strong interactions between postbuckling and propagation of cuts were observed. The FE-SDIC methodology developed specifically allows a first dialog between calculation / testing. The Discrete Ply Modeling method is able to compute the onset of failure of such complex tests. New tests responses called "envelop" are proposed and realized by following a load path that allows to validate the behavior of the notched structure for certification purposes. This methodology should eventually lead to a new vision of the tests pyramid by "Predictive Virtual Testing"

    Combined loadings after medium velocity impact on large CFRP laminate plates: Tests and enhanced computation/testing dialogue

    The development and certification of aeronautical composite structures is still largely based on the pyramid of tests. This approach is extremely costly in terms of number of tests, especially at the level of coupons. Moreover, these tests are highly conservative, under uniaxial loading, and do not represent the actual behavior at structure scale. To overcome these drawbacks, a new methodology has been developed at the Institut Clément Ader, which uses a complex loading test rig for technological specimens. This research focuses on the combined loading after impact of CFRP plates and highlights a specific behavior quite different from the usual CAI (Compression After Impact) response at the scale of coupons. In particular, compression, shear and combined shear/compression loadings were applied to large Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) laminated plates and the interaction of the impact damage with the post-buckling behavior has been investigated

    Measurement invariance of the short version of the problematic mobile phone use questionnaire (PMPUQ-SV) across eight languages

    The prevalence of mobile phone use across the world has increased greatly over the past two decades. Problematic Mobile Phone Use (PMPU) has been studied in relation to public health and comprises various behaviours, including dangerous, prohibited, and dependent use. These types of problematic mobile phone behaviours are typically assessed with the short version of the Problematic Mobile Phone Use Questionnaire (PMPUQ-SV). However, to date, no study has ever examined the degree to which the PMPU scale assesses the same construct across different languages. The aims of the present study were to (i) determine an optimal factor structure for the PMPUQ-SV among university populations using eight versions of the scale (i.e., French, German, Hungarian, English, Finnish, Italian, Polish, and Spanish); and (ii) simultaneously examine the measurement invariance (MI) of the PMPUQ-SV across all languages. The whole study sample comprised 3038 participants. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and Cronbach's alpha coefficients were extracted from the demographic and PMPUQ-SV items. Individual and multigroup confirmatory factor analyses alongside MI analyses were conducted. Results showed a similar pattern of PMPU across the translated scales. A three-factor model of the PMPUQ-SV fitted the data well and presented with good psychometric properties. Six languages were validated independently, and five were compared via measurement invariance for future cross-cultural comparisons. The present paper contributes to the assessment of problematic mobile phone use because it is the first study to provide a cross-cultural psychometric analysis of the PMPUQ-SV

    Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the world’s oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on wide-ranging species

    Measurement of the (eta c)(1S) production cross-section in proton-proton collisions via the decay (eta c)(1S) -> p(p)over-bar

    The production of the ηc(1S)\eta_c (1S) state in proton-proton collisions is probed via its decay to the ppˉp \bar{p} final state with the LHCb detector, in the rapidity range 2.06.52.0 6.5 GeV/c. The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)\eta_c (1S) mesons relative to the prompt J/ψJ/\psi cross-section is measured, for the first time, to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.74±0.29±0.28±0.18B\sigma_{\eta_c (1S)}/\sigma_{J/\psi} = 1.74 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.18 _{B} at a centre-of-mass energy s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb1^{-1}, and σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.60±0.29±0.25±0.17B\sigma_{\eta_c (1S)}/\sigma_{J/\psi} = 1.60 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.17 _{B} at s=8\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV using 2.0 fb1^{-1}. The uncertainties quoted are, in order, statistical, systematic, and that on the ratio of branching fractions of the ηc(1S)\eta_c (1S) and J/ψJ/\psi decays to the ppˉp \bar{p} final state. In addition, the inclusive branching fraction of bb-hadron decays into ηc(1S)\eta_c (1S) mesons is measured, for the first time, to be B(bηcX)=(4.88±0.64±0.25±0.67B)×103B ( b \rightarrow \eta_c X ) = (4.88 \pm 0.64 \pm 0.25 \pm 0.67 _{B}) \times 10^{-3}, where the third uncertainty includes also the uncertainty on the J/ψJ/\psi inclusive branching fraction from bb-hadron decays. The difference between the J/ψJ/\psi and ηc(1S)\eta_c (1S) meson masses is determined to be 114.7±1.5±0.1114.7 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.1 MeV/c2^2.The production of the ηc(1S)\eta _c (1S) state in proton-proton collisions is probed via its decay to the ppp\overline{p} final state with the LHCb detector, in the rapidity range 2.06.5GeV/c2.0 6.5 \mathrm{{\,GeV/}{ c}} .     A study of CP violation in B-+/- -> DK +/- and B-+/- -> D pi(+/-) decays with D -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) final states

    A first study of CP violation in the decay modes B±[KS0K±π]Dh±B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\pm \pi^\mp]_D h^\pm and B±[KS0Kπ±]Dh±B^\pm\to [K^0_{\rm S} K^\mp \pi^\pm]_D h^\pm, where hh labels a KK or π\pi meson and DD labels a D0D^0 or D0\overline{D}^0 meson, is performed. The analysis uses the LHCb data set collected in pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb1^{-1}. The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase γ\gamma through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of γ\gamma using other decay modes
