    The purpose of this study is to examine the intertextuality that is revealed in the process of responding to, and producing, Yeonhaengnok and to suggest educational content for travel literature courses based on this. To this end, texts (travel journals) that cite 'Yeolha Ilgi (熱河日記)'—written by Park Ji-won (朴趾源) (Yeonam [燕巖])—were analyzed with a view to categorizing the various aspects of response that are revealed, and specifically those that relate to the common experience of 'enactment'. It can be argued that these texts represent a process of responding to and producing works in which future performers as readers share and expand their experiences and thoughts through reading. This study proposes that studying them in this way can transform the intertextual approach (based on response and consequent production) to teaching travel literature. 이 연구의 목적은 연행록의 수용·생산 과정에서 나타나는 상호텍스트성을 밝히고, 이를 바탕으로 기행문학 교육 내용을 제안하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 연암(燕巖) 박지원(朴趾源)

    Mediastinal lymphoma in a young Turkish Angora cat

    An 8-month old intact male Turkish Angora cat was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), Seoul National University, for an evaluation of anorexia and severe dyspnea. The thoracic radiographs revealed significant pleural effusion. A cytology evaluation of the pleural fluid strongly suggested a lymphoma containing variable sized lymphocytes with frequent mitotic figures and prominent nucleoli. The feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus tests were negative. The cat was euthanized at his owner's request and a necropsy was performed. A mass was detected on the mediastinum and lung lobes. A histopathology evaluation confirmed the mass to be a lymphoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed the mass to be CD3 positive. In conclusion, the cat was diagnosed as a T-cell mediastinal lymphoma

    Laparoscopic splenectomy for sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation of the spleen

    Primary splenic tumors are rare and mainly found incidentally on radiologic studies. Among them, sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) of the spleen is a new entity defined as a benign pathologic lesion. Most SANTs have no clinical symptoms and are occasionally accompanied by other splenic diseases such as malignancies. So, the exact diagnosis of the nature of the splenic tumor is mandatory for further treatment. But, preoperative diagnosis is not easy since it is difficult to obtain the tissue from the spleen for pathological study. Recently, laparoscopic splenectomy has become the more standard procedure for the spleen for diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report a rare case of SANT diagnosed following laparoscopic splenectomy

    Occurrence of patulin in various fruit juices from South Korea: An exposure assessment

    This research article published by Springer Nature Switzerland AG., 2010To determine patulin in various fruit juices, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was optimized and validated. For validation of HPLC method, a linearity, accuracy, precision, detection limit, and quantification limit were determined. Linearity (R2 = 0.99995), accuracy (96.1–115.7%), precision (3.31–9.52), detection limit (6 ng/mL), and quantification limit (8 ng/mL) were in agreement with performance criteria for patulin as set by the European Commission hence proved that HPLC can be used to detect patulin in fruit juices. After validation, the method was applied to estimate the prevalence of patulin in fruit juices (apple, grape, and orange juices). Nine samples (12.5%, 3 apple, 2 orange, and 4 grape juices) of 72 samples were positive for patulin in the range 2.8 to 30.9 ng/mL. According to the monitoring results, daily intake was estimated to be 0.17 ng/kg BW/day which was lower than the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (0.4 μg/kg) established by Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives. These results indicate that the detection method coincides with the performance criteria and is appropriate for analysis of patulin, and continuous monitoring of patulin in various fruit juices from Korea is necessary

    To achieve safe airway management, it is essential first to predict whether there will be difficulties in intubating or ventilating the patient's airway. An enlarged thyroid mass can produce a tracheal obstruction by compression or intraluminal invasion or both. We report two patients with thyroid cancer that obstructed the trachea by compression or invasion. There was no difficulty in endotracheal intubation of the patients with marked thyroid enlargement or in securing passage of the endotracheal tube through the compressed or narrowed portion of the trachea

    Comprehensive evaluation of matrix factorization methods for the analysis of DNA microarray gene expression data

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Clustering-based methods on gene-expression analysis have been shown to be useful in biomedical applications such as cancer subtype discovery. Among them, Matrix factorization (MF) is advantageous for clustering gene expression patterns from DNA microarray experiments, as it efficiently reduces the dimension of gene expression data. Although several MF methods have been proposed for clustering gene expression patterns, a systematic evaluation has not been reported yet.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here we evaluated the clustering performance of orthogonal and non-orthogonal MFs by a total of nine measurements for performance in four gene expression datasets and one well-known dataset for clustering. Specifically, we employed a non-orthogonal MF algorithm, BSNMF (Bi-directional Sparse Non-negative Matrix Factorization), that applies bi-directional sparseness constraints superimposed on non-negative constraints, comprising a few dominantly co-expressed genes and samples together. Non-orthogonal MFs tended to show better clustering-quality and prediction-accuracy indices than orthogonal MFs as well as a traditional method, K-means. Moreover, BSNMF showed improved performance in these measurements. Non-orthogonal MFs including BSNMF showed also good performance in the functional enrichment test using Gene Ontology terms and biological pathways.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In conclusion, the clustering performance of orthogonal and non-orthogonal MFs was appropriately evaluated for clustering microarray data by comprehensive measurements. This study showed that non-orthogonal MFs have better performance than orthogonal MFs and <it>K</it>-means for clustering microarray data.</p

    Characteristics of pediatric rhabdomyolysis and the associated risk factors for acute kidney injury: a retrospective multicenter study in Korea

    Background The clinical features of pediatric rhabdomyolysis differ from those of the adults with rhabdomyolysis; however, multicenter studies are lacking. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of pediatric rhabdomyolysis and reveal the risk factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in such cases. Methods This retrospective study analyzed the medical records of children and adolescents diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis at 23 hospitals in South Korea between January 2007 and December 2016. Results Among 880 patients, those aged 3 to 5 years old composed the largest subgroup (19.4%), and all age subgroups were predominantly male. The incidence of AKI was 11.3%. Neurological disorders (53.6%) and infection (39.0%) were the most common underlying disorder and cause of rhabdomyolysis, respectively. The median age at diagnosis in the AKI subgroup was older than that in the non-AKI subgroup (12.2 years vs. 8.0 years). There were no significant differences in body mass index, myalgia, dark-colored urine, or the number of causal factors between the two AKI-status subgroups. The multivariate logistic regression model indicated that the following factors were independently associated with AKI: multiorgan failure, presence of an underlying disorder, strong positive urine occult blood, increased aspartate aminotransferase and uric acid levels, and reduced calcium levels. Conclusions Our study revealed characteristic clinical and laboratory features of rhabdomyolysis in a Korean pediatric population and highlighted the risk factors for AKI in these cases. Our findings will contribute to a greater understanding of pediatric rhabdomyolysis and may enable early intervention against rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI

    Hypomorphic Mutations in TONSL Cause SPONASTRIME Dysplasia

    SPONASTRIME dysplasia is a rare, recessive skeletal dysplasia characterized by short stature, facial dysmorphism, and aberrant radiographic findings of the spine and long bone metaphysis. No causative genetic alterations for SPONASTRIME dysplasia have yet been determined. Using whole-exome sequencing (WES), we identified bi-allelic TONSL mutations in 10 of 13 individuals with SPONASTRIME dysplasia. TONSL is a multi-domain scaffold protein that interacts with DNA replication and repair factors and which plays critical roles in resistance to replication stress and the maintenance of genome integrity. We show here that cellular defects in dermal fibroblasts from affected individuals are complemented by the expression of wild-type TONSL. In addition, in vitro cell-based as-says and in silico analyses of TONSL structure support the pathogenicity of those TONSL variants. Intriguingly, a knock-in (KI) Tonsl mouse model leads to embryonic lethality, implying the physiological importance of TONSL. Overall, these findings indicate that genetic variants resulting in reduced function of TONSL cause SPONASTRIME dysplasia and highlight the importance of TONSL in embryonic development and postnatal growth.Peer reviewe

    Murine in vitro cellular models to better understand adipogenesis and its potential applications

    Adipogenesis has been extensively studied using in vitro models of cellular differentiation, enabling long-term regulation of fat cell metabolism in human adipose tissue (AT) material. Many studies promote the idea that manipulation of this process could potentially reduce the prevalence of obesity and its related diseases. It has now become essential to understand the molecular basis of fat cell development to tackle this pandemic disease, by identifying therapeutic targets and new biomarkers. This review explores murine cell models and their applications for study of the adipogenic differentiation process in vitro. We focus on the benefits and limitations of different cell line models to aid in interpreting data and selecting a good cell line model for successful understanding of adipose biology
