Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Determination of the number of wounded nucleons in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c
The charged particle multiplicity distributions measured by two experiments, WA97 and NA57, in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c have been analyzed in the framework of the wounded nucleon model (WNM). We obtain a good description of the data within the centrality range of our samples. This allows us to make use of the measured multiplicities to estimate the number of wounded nucleons of the collision
Alignment of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmic-ray tracks
37 pages, 15 figures, revised version, accepted by JINSTALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) experiment devoted to investigating the strongly interacting matter created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC energies. The ALICE ITS, Inner Tracking System, consists of six cylindrical layers of silicon detectors with three different technologies; in the outward direction: two layers of pixel detectors, two layers each of drift, and strip detectors. The number of parameters to be determined in the spatial alignment of the 2198 sensor modules of the ITS is about 13,000. The target alignment precision is well below 10 micron in some cases (pixels). The sources of alignment information include survey measurements, and the reconstructed tracks from cosmic rays and from proton-proton collisions. The main track-based alignment method uses the Millepede global approach. An iterative local method was developed and used as well. We present the results obtained for the ITS alignment using about 10^5 charged tracks from cosmic rays that have been collected during summer 2008, with the ALICE solenoidal magnet switched off.Peer reviewe
Higher harmonic anisotropic flow measurements of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV
We report on the first measurement of the triangular , quadrangular
, and pentagonal charged particle flow in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76
TeV measured with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We show
that the triangular flow can be described in terms of the initial spatial
anisotropy and its fluctuations, which provides strong constraints on its
origin. In the most central events, where the elliptic flow and
have similar magnitude, a double peaked structure in the two-particle azimuthal
correlations is observed, which is often interpreted as a Mach cone response to
fast partons. We show that this structure can be naturally explained from the
measured anisotropic flow Fourier coefficients.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, published version, figures at

Microchip electrophoresis tools for the analysis of small molecules
Microchip electrophoresis (ME) results from miniaturization of capillary electrophoresis (CE) to a microfabricated separation device. Both techniques have common characteristics, but in some aspects, the microfluidic separation device has unique features resulting from its planar miniaturized format. Here we describe the process to transfer of CE to ME and the benefits and drawbacks of the chip with respect to the capillary. A practical guide for method development on the microchip for small ionizable molecules such as phenolic compounds, amino acids, or alkaloids is also presented.Fil: Gomez, Federico Jose Vicente. Strange particle production in p-Be, p-Pb, Pb-Pb at 158 A GeV/c (WA97 experiment)
The CERN experiment WA97, which studies strange particle production at central rapidity in Pb-Pb, p-Pb, p-Be collisions at 158 A GeV/c, has already reported a pronounced enhancement of hyperon production. This is considered a sensitive signature for a phase transition to a new state of matter - the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). A comprehensive study, including the most recent results, of yields and transverse mass spectra of K-S(0), Lambda, Xi (-), Omega (-) (and antiparticles) and negative particles as a function of the number of nucleons partecipating in the collisions is presented
