Polarization scramblers with plasmonic meander-type metamaterials
Due to plasmonic excitations, metallic meander structures exhibit an extraordinarily high transmission within a well-defined pass band. Within this frequency range, they behave like almost ideal linear polarizers, can induce large phase retardation between s- and p-polarized light and show a high polarization conversion efficiency. Due to these properties, meander structures can interact very effectively with polarized light. In this report, we suggest a novel polarization scrambler design using spatially distributed metallic meander structures with random angular orientations. The whole device has an optical response averaged over all pixel orientations within the incident beam diameter. We characterize the depolarizing properties of the suggested polarization scrambler with the Mueller matrix and investigate both single layer and stacked meander structures at different frequencies. The presented polarization scrambler can be flexibly designed to work at any wavelength in the visible range with a bandwidth of up to 100 THz. With our preliminary design, we achieve depolarization rates larger than 50% for arbitrarily polarized monochromatic and narrow-band light. Circularly polarized light could be depolarized by up to 95% at 600 THz
The ATLAS3D project - XXIX : The new look of early-type galaxies and surrounding fields disclosed by extremely deep optical images
Date of Acceptance: 25/09/2014Galactic archaeology based on star counts is instrumental to reconstruct the past mass assembly of Local Group galaxies. The development of new observing techniques and data reduction, coupled with the use of sensitive large field of view cameras, now allows us to pursue this technique in more distant galaxies exploiting their diffuse low surface brightness (LSB) light. As part of the ATLAS3D project, we have obtained with the MegaCam camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope extremely deep, multiband images of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs). We present here a catalogue of 92 galaxies from the ATLAS3D sample, which are located in low- to medium-density environments. The observing strategy and data reduction pipeline, which achieve a gain of several magnitudes in the limiting surface brightness with respect to classical imaging surveys, are presented. The size and depth of the survey are compared to other recent deep imaging projects. The paper highlights the capability of LSB-optimized surveys at detecting new prominent structures that change the apparent morphology of galaxies. The intrinsic limitations of deep imaging observations are also discussed, among those, the contamination of the stellar haloes of galaxies by extended ghost reflections, and the cirrus emission from Galactic dust. The detection and systematic census of fine structures that trace the present and past mass assembly of ETGs are one of the prime goals of the project. We provide specific examples of each type of observed structures - tidal tails, stellar streams and shells - and explain how they were identified and classified. We give an overview of the initial results. The detailed statistical analysis will be presented in future papers.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Formation and evolution of S0 galaxies: a SAURON case study of NGC7332
We present SAURON integral-field observations of the S0 galaxy NGC7332.
Existing broad-band ground-based and HST photometry reveals a double disk
structure and a boxy bulge interpreted as a bar viewed close to edge-on. The
SAURON two-dimensional stellar kinematic maps confirm the existence of the bar
and inner disk but also uncover the presence of a cold counter-rotating stellar
component within the central 250 pc. The Hbeta and [OIII] emission line maps
show that the ionised gas has a complex morphology and kinematics, including
both a component counter-rotating with respect to the stars and a fainter
co-rotating one. Analysis of the absorption line-strength maps show that
NGC7332 is young everywhere. The presence of a large-scale bar can explain most
of those properties, but the fact that we see a significant amount of unsettled
gas, together with a few peculiar features in the maps, suggest that NGC7332 is
still evolving. Interactions as well as bar-driven processes must thus have
played an important role in the formation and evolution of NGC7332, and
presumably of S0 galaxies in general.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Stellar Kinematics and Populations of Early-Type Galaxies with the SAURON and OASIS Integral-Field Spectrographs
We summarise the results and achievements of integral-field spectroscopy of
early-type galaxies, observed as part of a survey using both the SAURON and
OASIS spectrographs. From the perspective of integral-field spectroscopy, these
otherwise smooth and featureless objects show a wealth of structure, both in
their stellar kinematics and populations. We focus on the stellar content, and
examine properties on both kiloparsec scales with SAURON, and scales of 100's
of parsecs with OASIS. These complementary studies reveal two types of
kinematically distinct components (KDCs), differing primarily in their
intrinsic sizes. In previous studies, KDCs and their host galaxies have
generally been found to be unremarkable in other aspects. We show that large
KDCs, typical of the well-studied cases, indeed show little or no age
differences with their host galaxy. The KDCs detected with the higher
spatial-resolution of OASIS are intrinsically smaller and include, in contrast,
a significant fraction of young stars. We speculate on the relationship between
KDCs and their host galaxies, and the implications for young populations in
early-type galaxies.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. Invited talk, submitted to "Adaptive
