    Background: The nationwide “German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents” (KiGGS), conducted in 2003–2006, showed an increase in the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity compared to the early 1990s, indicating the need for regularly monitoring. Recently, a follow-up—KiGGS Wave 1 (2009–2012)—was carried out as a telephone-based survey, providing self-reported height and weight. Since self-reports lead to a bias in prevalence rates of weight status, a correction is needed. The aim of the present study is to obtain updated prevalence rates for overweight and obesity for 11- to 17-year olds living in Germany after correction for bias in self-reports. Methods: In KiGGS Wave 1, self-reported height and weight were collected from 4948 adolescents during a telephone interview. Participants were also asked about their body perception. From a subsample of KiGGS Wave 1 participants, measurements for height and weight were collected in a physical examination. In order to correct prevalence rates derived from self-reports, weight status categories based on self-reported and measured height and weight were used to estimate a correction formula according to an established procedure under consideration of body perception. The correction procedure was applied and corrected rates were estimated. Results: The corrected prevalence of overweight, including obesity, derived from KiGGS Wave 1, showed that the rate has not further increased compared to the KiGGS baseline survey (18.9 % vs. 18.8 % based on the German reference). Conclusion: The rates of overweight still remain at a high level. The results of KiGGS Wave 1 emphasise the significance of this health issue and the need for prevention of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents

    Cytokine secretion from mononuclear cells cultured in vitro with starch-based polymers and poly-L-lactide

    The cytokine network is one of the major controlling systems of the inflammatory process, driving the magnitude and duration of the host response against invading microorganisms, foreign materials, or altered internal stimuli. Pro- and antiinflammatory cytokines were quantified after in vitro culture of a mixed population of monocytes/macrophages and lymphocytes with biodegradable polymers. Different blends of starch-based polymers and their composites filled with hydroxyapatite were studied and compared with poly-L-lactide. Interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumour necrosis factor- were investigated as the markers of immunological reactivity because they are known to act at the early stages of injury/invasion. Interferon-, recognized as a proinflammatory cytokine, although not present during early responses was also investigated. Contrarily, IL-4 derived from T lymphocytes, was investigated because it is an immunoregulator that counteracts some aspects of inflammation. T lymphocyte activation was also determined by quantifying IL-2. The results support the hypothesis that different biodegradable polymers can affect mononuclear cell activation and the production of several cytokines associated with the inflammatory process. No IL-2 or interferon- was found in the culture supernatants after 3, 7, and 14 days in the presence of any of the materials. IL-6 was detected in the highest amounts, for all the conditions, followed by tumour necrosis factor-. IL-1 was produced in very low amounts, being undetectable with some of the starch-based materials. IL-4 was the only cytokine that did not demonstrate any significant difference within this group of materials.     Contralateral delay activity tracks the storage of visually presented letters and words

    Electrophysiological studies have demonstrated that the maintenance of items in visual working memory (VWM) is indexed by the contralateral delay activity (CDA), which increases in amplitude as the number of objects to remember increases, plateauing at VWM capacity. Previous work has primarily utilized simple visual items, such as colored squares or picture stimuli. Despite the frequent use of verbal stimuli in seminal investigations of visual attention and memory, it is unknown whether temporary storage of letters and words also elicit a typical load‐sensitive CDA. Given their close associations with language and phonological codes, it is possible that participants store these stimuli phonologically, and not visually. Participants completed a standard visual change‐detection task while their ERPs were recorded. Experiment 1 compared the CDA elicited by colored squares compared to uppercase consonants, and Experiment 2 compared the CDA elicited by words compared to colored bars. Behavioral accuracy of change detection decreased with increasing set size for colored squares, letters, and words. We found that a capacity‐limited CDA was present for colored squares, letters, and word arrays, suggesting that the visual codes for letters and words were maintained in VWM, despite the potential for transfer to verbal working memory. These results suggest that, despite their verbal associations, letters and words elicit the electrophysiological marker of VWM encoding and storage

    Laser capture microdissection in forensic research: a review

    In forensic sciences, short tandem repeat (STR) analysis has become the prime tool for DNA-based identification of the donor(s) of biological stains and/or traces. Many traces, however, contain cells and, hence, DNA, from more than a single individual, giving rise to mixed genotypes and the subsequent difficulties in interpreting the results. An even more challenging situation occurs when cells of a victim are much more abundant than the cells of the perpetrator. Therefore, the forensic community seeks to improve cell-separation methods in order to generate single-donor cell populations from a mixed trace in order to facilitate DNA typing and identification. Laser capture microdissection (LCM) offers a valuable tool for precise separation of specific cells. This review summarises all possible forensic applications of LCM, gives an overview of the staining and detection options, including automated detection and retrieval of cells of interest, and reviews the DNA extraction protocols compatible with LCM of cells from forensic samples
