Knowledge, Leadership and the Role of Spirituality: An Exploration of Principal as Spiritual Leader

Recent scholarship (Knapp, Copland, Honig, Plecki & Portin, 2010; Louis, Leithwood, Wahlstrom, Anderson et al., 2010) demonstrates the impact of school leadership on student success. Using the research model of the ISSPP (Day, 2010), a team of researchers utilized a dynamic approach to identify leadership practices and beliefs that could be attributed to rises in student achievement and diminishing achievement gaps. CONVERGÊNCIA VOLUNTÁRIA ÀS NORMAS INTERNACIONAIS DE CONTABILIDADE EM SOCIEDADES COOPERATIVAS: CORRELAÇÃO ENTRE PADRÕES E PRÁTICAS

Economic globalization has forced the adjustment of financial statements, usually prepared in accordance with standards and practices, international standards, so that also reach the perspectives of local and external users and can be used as a basis of measurement or comparison. The objective of this study is to verify the adequacy of voluntary accounting policies applied in the process of accounting convergence to international accounting standards. To this end, we developed a descriptive qualitative approach, based on a single case study of a production cooperative of Northwest Rio Grande do Sul The results indicate that, even if the regulatory changes related to the convergence of accounting standards to IFRS for the cooperative sector are voluntary, its adoption has provided a breakthrough in the accounts of the cooperative study, is the knowledge generated for accounting professionals and controlling, either by improving information to its users, with the most visible aspects, as evaluation sheet presented in the financial statements. Thus, we conclude that the convergence of accounting practices and standards / international standards was important to improve the quality of accounting information in the cooperative study.A globalização da economia tem forçado a adaptação das informações contábeis, usualmente preparadas de acordo com padrões e práticas locais, aos padrões internacionais, para que assim atinjam igualmente as perspectivas dos usuários locais e externos e possam ser utilizadas como base de medida ou comparação. O objetivo deste estudo é verificar a adequação voluntária das práticas contábeis aplicadas no processo de convergência contábil às normas internacionais de contabilidade. Para tal, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa descritiva com abordagem qualitativa, com base em um estudo de caso único de uma cooperativa de produção do noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Os resultados indicam que, mesmo que as alterações normativas, relativas à convergência das normas contábeis às IFRS para o segmento cooperativo, sejam voluntárias, sua adoção proporcionou um avanço na contabilidade da cooperativa em estudo, seja no conhecimento gerado para os profissionais da área contábil e da controladoria, seja na melhoria das informações aos seus usuários, com aspectos de maior visibilidade, como a avaliação patrimonial apresentada nas demonstrações contábeis. Assim, conclui-se que a convergência entre as práticas contábeis e as normas/padrões internacionais foi importante para a melhoria da qualidade da informação contábil na cooperativa em estudo

Cryo-EM, X-ray diffraction, and atomistic simulations reveal determinants for the formation of a supramolecular myelin-like proteolipid lattice

Myelin protein P2 is a peripheral membrane protein of the fatty acid?binding protein family that functions in the formation and maintenance of the peripheral nerve myelin sheath. Several P2 gene mutations cause human Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy, but the mature myelin sheath assembly mechanism is unclear. Here, cryo-EM of myelin-like proteolipid multilayers revealed an ordered three-dimensional (3D) lattice of P2 molecules between stacked lipid bilayers, visualizing supramolecular assembly at the myelin major dense line. The data disclosed that a single P2 layer is inserted between two bilayers in a tight intermembrane space of ?3 nm, implying direct interactions between P2 and two membrane surfaces. X-ray diffraction from P2-stacked bicelle multilayers revealed lateral protein organization, and surface mutagenesis of P2 coupled with structure-function experiments revealed a role for both the portal region of P2 and its opposite face in membrane interactions. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of P2 on model membrane surfaces suggested that Arg-88 is critical for P2-membrane interactions, in addition to the helical lid domain. Negatively charged lipid headgroups stably anchored P2 on the myelin-like bilayer surface. Membrane binding may be accompanied by opening of the P2 ?-barrel structure and ligand exchange with the apposing bilayer. Our results provide an unprecedented view into an ordered, multilayered biomolecular membrane system induced by the presence of a peripheral membrane protein from human myelin. This is an important step toward deciphering the 3D assembly of a mature myelin sheath at the molecular level.Peer reviewe

Criminalidade organizada nas prisões e os ataques do PCC

The advent of organized crime in Brazilian prisons, especially in the state of São Paulo, constitutes the object of this article. The waves of attack unleashed by the Capital's First Command (PCC - Primeiro Comando da Capital), in May 2006, which resulted in countless deaths, brought cities to a halt, and cornered authorities in charge preventing them from applying law and order are the starting as well as reference points taken. The advent of organized criminality is analyzed under the light of determined axes: the international scenario and the Brazilian context, the historical antecedents, the taking root of crime in society and the role of penitentiary public policies.A emergência da criminalidade organizada nas prisões brasileiras, em especial no Estado de São Paulo, constitui objeto deste artigo. Tomam-se como ponto de partida e referência para análise as ondas de ataques desencadeadas pelo Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), de maio a agosto de 2006, que resultaram em inúmeros mortos, paralisaram cidades e acuaram as autoridades encarregadas de aplicar lei e ordem. A emergência da criminalidade organizada é analisada sob eixos determinados: cenário internacional e contexto brasileiro, antecedentes históricos, enraizamento do crime na sociedade e papel das políticas públicas penitenciárias
