Female Leader As Sui Generis Reflected In Iron Lady Movie (2012) Directed By Phyllida Lloyd: A Feminist Approach
The object of the study is a movie Iron Lady directed by Phyllida Lloyd. The study is to reveal how female leader as sui generisis reflected in Iron Lady directed by Phyllida Lloydpublished in 2012. The objective of the study is to analyze the structural elements in the movie and to analize female leader as sui generis as leader of the movie based on feminist approach.
The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as a type of the research. The data sources are divided into two, namely primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is the events of the movie and script of Iron Lady and the secondary data source is biography of Margaret Thatcher as major character. The method of collecting data is documentation. The technique of analyzing data is descriptive.
The result of the study is as follows: First, based on the structural analysis, Phyllida Lloyd delivers a moral message that a woman as leader is a unique person on her own kind. Women have equal opportunity to achieve their goals of life in all aspects. Second, based on the feminist analysis, Phyllida Lloyd reflects that women have to strive equal opportunity to be a leader and equal treatment in society and politic. Unveiling iconic sounds as intangible cultural heritage of a tourist city
Purpose: This study is part of a series aimed at improving the city's environment, as fully restoring the past soundscape is hardly feasible. The initial study aims to uncover the city's sound characteristics, including iconic sounds that have shaped the city's environment for decades, contributing to its status as Indonesia's second most popular tourist destination. This stage is critical for informing policymaking to carefully manage and enhance the urban acoustic environment in alignment with the preserved culture. Design/methodology/approach: The city's sound profile was examined using standard urban sound taxonomies. The study used quantitative methods, including (1) sound pressure level (SPL) measurements and sound recordings, (2) in situ surveys and (3) memory-based surveys. The first set of data were compared to current standards and standard urban sound taxonomies, while the second set was analysed to determine the median rating score for determining the soundscape dimensions. The third data set was used to identify the specific acoustic aspects inherent in Yogyakarta. Findings: Yogyakarta's acoustic environment was bustling, with traffic noise and human activities dominating the soundscape, surpassing the standard levels. Many sounds not classified in standard urban sound taxonomies were present, showing the diverse nature of urban sound classification, particularly in a cultural and traditional city like Yogyakarta. The memory-based survey unveils Yogyakarta's two most remarkable soundmarks, “gamelan” and “andong”, which support the findings of prior studies. The in situ survey rated the city's acoustic environment as eventful, pleasurable and generally appropriate, emphasising the presence of cultural sounds unique to Yogyakarta, even though they are not fully audible in the current environment. Originality/value: The standard sound taxonomies used in urban areas need to be adjusted to include the unique sounds produced by cultural and traditional activities in developing countries. The ordinates and subordinates of the taxonomies also need to be updated. When cultural and daily activities are massively seen in a particular city, the sounds they produce can be recalled exclusively as the city's signature. It is urgent to implement policies to safeguard the few remaining soundmarks before they disappear entirely
You are Not Welcome: Social Exchanges between Female Spider Monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)
Group living leads to competition for food between group members. Two types of intragroup food competition may occur: scramble competition, in which all group members use the same resource, such that feeding opportunities are equal for everyone; and contest competition, in which some group members monopolize resources through aggression and dominance. In species in which females disperse from the natal group and immigrate into other groups, immigrant females increase group size and thus possibly food competition. Under these circumstances, other females may use aggression to discourage new females from joining the group. We assessed the distribution of aggression, embraces, and kisses among female spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in relation to group tenure. We recorded social interactions during 1688 10-min focal animal samples on 11 females in Santa Rosa, Costa Rica. We found that aggression was rare between long-term resident females and aggression rates were not higher during feeding than in other contexts, suggesting there was little contest competition. Long-term residents and less recently immigrant females showed higher aggression rates toward the most recent immigrants than toward other females, especially during the first months after a female immigrated, which coincided with the dry season. We did not find similar patterns for embrace and kiss. These results suggest that other females target aggression toward the most recent immigrants to reduce scramble competition. This finding suggests that group tenure should be included in socioecological models for species with female dispersal. © 2017 Springer Science+Business Media, LL
Why male orangutans do not kill infants
Infanticide is widespread among mammals, is particularly common in primates, and has been shown to be an adaptive male strategy under certain conditions. Although no infanticides in wild orangutans have been reported to date, several authors have suggested that infanticide has been an important selection pressure influencing orangutan behavior and the evolution of orangutan social systems. In this paper, we critically assess this suggestion. We begin by investigating whether wild orangutans have been studied for a sufficiently long period that we might reasonably expect to have detected infanticide if it occurs. We consider whether orangutan females exhibit counterstrategies typically employed by other mammalian females. We also assess the hypothesis that orangutan females form special bonds with particular “protector males” to guard against infanticide. Lastly, we discuss socioecological reasons why orangutan males may not benefit from infanticide. We conclude that there is limited evidence for female counterstrategies and little support for the protector male hypothesis. Aspects of orangutan paternity certainty, lactational amenorrhea, and ranging behavior may explain why infanticide is not a strategy regularly employed by orangutan males on Sumatra or Borneo
Sexual Signalling in Propithecus verreauxi: Male “Chest Badge” and Female Mate Choice
Communication, an essential prerequisite for sociality, involves the transmission of signals. A signal can be defined as any action or trait produced by one animal, the sender, that produces a change in the behaviour of another animal, the receiver. Secondary sexual signals are often used for mate choice because they may inform on a potential partner's quality. Verreaux's sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) is characterized by the presence of two different morphs of males (bimorphism), which can show either a stained or clean chest. The chest becomes stained by secretions of the sternal gland during throat marking (rubbing throat and chest on a vertical substrate while smearing the scent deposition). The role of the chest staining in guiding female mate choice was previously hypothesized but never demonstrated probably due to the difficulty of observing sifaka copulations in the wild. Here we report that stained-chested males had a higher throat marking activity than clean-chested males during the mating season, but not during the birth season. We found that females copulated more frequently with stained-chested males than the clean-chested males. Finally, in agreement with the biological market theory, we found that clean-chested males, with a lower scent-releasing potential, offered more grooming to females. This “grooming for sex” tactic was not completely unsuccessful; in fact, half of the clean-chested males copulated with females, even though at low frequency. In conclusion, the chest stain, possibly correlated with different cues targeted by females, could be one of the parameters which help females in selecting mates
Behavioral, Ecological, and Evolutionary Aspects of Meat-Eating by Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii)
Meat-eating is an important aspect of human evolution, but how meat became a substantial component of the human diet is still poorly understood. Meat-eating in our closest relatives, the great apes, may provide insight into the emergence of this trait, but most existing data are for chimpanzees. We report 3 rare cases of meat-eating of slow lorises, Nycticebus coucang, by 1 Sumatran orangutan mother–infant dyad in Ketambe, Indonesia, to examine how orangutans find slow lorises and share meat. We combine these 3 cases with 2 previous ones to test the hypothesis that slow loris captures by orangutans are seasonal and dependent on fruit availability. We also provide the first (to our knowledge) quantitative data and high-definition video recordings of meat chewing rates by great apes, which we use to estimate the minimum time necessary for a female Australopithecus africanus to reach its daily energy requirements when feeding partially on raw meat. Captures seemed to be opportunistic but orangutans may have used olfactory cues to detect the prey. The mother often rejected meat sharing requests and only the infant initiated meat sharing. Slow loris captures occurred only during low ripe fruit availability, suggesting that meat may represent a filler fallback food for orangutans. Orangutans ate meat more than twice as slowly as chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), suggesting that group living may function as a meat intake accelerator in hominoids. Using orangutan data as a model, time spent chewing per day would not require an excessive amount of time for our social ancestors (australopithecines and hominids), as long as meat represented no more than a quarter of their diet
Y-Chromosome Variation in Hominids: Intraspecific Variation Is Limited to the Polygamous Chimpanzee

and CDY (chromodomain protein Y) varied with respect to copy number and position among chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).
In comparison, seven Y-chromosomal lineages of the bonobo (Pan paniscus), the chimpanzee’s closest living relative,
showed no variation. We extend our earlier comparative investigation to include an analysis of the intraspecific variation of
these genes in gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), and examine the resulting patterns in the light of
the species’ markedly different social and mating behaviors.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH) of DAZ and CDY in 12 Y-chromosomal
lineages of western lowland gorilla (G. gorilla gorilla) and a single lineage of the eastern lowland gorilla (G. beringei graueri)
showed no variation among lineages. Similar findings were noted for the 10 Y-chromosomal lineages examined in the
Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), and 11 Y-chromosomal lineages of the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). We validated
the contrasting DAZ and CDY patterns using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in chimpanzee and
bonobo.
Conclusion/Significance: High intraspecific variation in copy number and position of the DAZ and CDY genes is seen only in
the chimpanzee. We hypothesize that this is best explained by sperm competition that results in the variant DAZ and CDY
haplotypes detected in this species. In contrast, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans—species that are not subject to sperm
competition—showed no intraspecific variation in DAZ and CDY suggesting that monoandry in gorillas, and preferential
female mate choice in bonobos and orangutans, probably permitted the fixation of a single Y variant in each taxon. These
data support the notion that the evolutionary history of a primate Y chromosome is not simply encrypted in its DNA

Strategies for the Use of Fallback Foods in Apes
Researchers have suggested that fallback foods (FBFs) shape primate food processing adaptations, whereas preferred foods drive harvesting adaptations, and that the dietary importance of FBFs is central in determining the expression of a variety of traits. We examine these hypotheses in extant apes. First, we compare the nature and dietary importance of FBFs used by each taxon. FBF importance appears greatest in gorillas, followed by chimpanzees and siamangs, and least in orangutans and gibbons (bonobos are difficult to place). Next, we compare 20 traits among taxa to assess whether the relative expression of traits expected for consumption of FBFs matches their observed dietary importance. Trait manifestation generally conforms to predictions based on dietary importance of FBFs. However, some departures from predictions exist, particularly for orang-utans, which express relatively more food harvesting and processing traits predicted for consuming large amounts of FBFs than expected based on observed dietary importance. This is probably due to the chemical, mechanical, and phenological properties of the apes’ main FBFs, in particular high importance of figs for chimpanzees and hylobatids, compared to use of bark and leaves—plus figs in at least some Sumatran populations—by orang-utans. This may have permitted more specialized harvesting adaptations in chimpanzees and hylobatids, and required enhanced processing adaptations in orang-utans. Possible intercontinental differences in the availability and quality of preferred and FBFs may also be important. Our analysis supports previous hypotheses suggesting a critical influence of the dietary importance and quality of FBFs on ape ecology and, consequently, evolution
The genomic landscape of balanced cytogenetic abnormalities associated with human congenital anomalies
Despite the clinical significance of balanced chromosomal abnormalities (BCAs), their characterization has largely been restricted to cytogenetic resolution. We explored the landscape of BCAs at nucleotide resolution in 273 subjects with a spectrum of congenital anomalies. Whole-genome sequencing revised 93% of karyotypes and demonstrated complexity that was cryptic to karyotyping in 21% of BCAs, highlighting the limitations of conventional cytogenetic approaches. At least 33.9% of BCAs resulted in gene disruption that likely contributed to the developmental phenotype, 5.2% were associated with pathogenic genomic imbalances, and 7.3% disrupted topologically associated domains (TADs) encompassing known syndromic loci. Remarkably, BCA breakpoints in eight subjects altered a single TAD encompassing MEF2C, a known driver of 5q14.3 microdeletion syndrome, resulting in decreased MEF2C expression. We propose that sequence-level resolution dramatically improves prediction of clinical outcomes for balanced rearrangements and provides insight into new pathogenic mechanisms, such as altered regulation due to changes in chromosome topology
