Isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in silica: experimental estimation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous spectral widths
We report nanosecond time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on the
isoelectronic series of oxygen deficient centers in amorphous silica,
Si-ODC(II), Ge-ODC(II) and Sn-ODC(II) which are responsible of fluorescence
activities at 4 eV under excitation at 5 eV. The dependence of the
first moment of their emission band on time, and that of the radiative decay
lifetime on emission energy are analyzed within a theoretical model able to
describe the effects introduced by disorder on the optical properties of the
defects. We obtain separate estimates of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous
contributions to the measured emission linewidth and we derive homogeneous
spectroscopic features of the investigated point defects (Huangh-Rhys factor,
homogeneous width, oscillator strength, vibrational frequency). The results
point to a picture in which an oxygen deficient center localized on a heavier
atom features a higher degree of inhomogeneity due to stronger local distortion
of the surrounding matrix. For Si, Ge, Sn related defects the parameter
, able to quantify inhomogeneity, results to be 65, 78 and 90$%,
respectively
Structural relaxation of E' gamma centers in amorphous silica
We report experimental evidence of the existence of two variants of the E'
gamma centers induced in silica by gamma rays at room temperature. The two
variants are distinguishable by the fine features of their line shapes in
paramagnetic resonance spectra. These features suggest that the two E' gamma
differ for their topology. We find a thermally induced interconversion between
the centers with an activation energy of about 34 meV. Hints are also found for
the existence of a structural configuration of minimum energy and of a

Shadowing in Inelastic Scattering of Muons on Carbon, Calcium and Lead at Low XBj
Nuclear shadowing is observed in the per-nucleon cross-sections of positive
muons on carbon, calcium and lead as compared to deuterium. The data were taken
by Fermilab experiment E665 using inelastically scattered muons of mean
incident momentum 470 GeV/c. Cross-section ratios are presented in the
kinematic region 0.0001 < XBj <0.56 and 0.1 < Q**2 < 80 GeVc. The data are
consistent with no significant nu or Q**2 dependence at fixed XBj. As XBj
decreases, the size of the shadowing effect, as well as its A dependence, are
found to approach the corresponding measurements in photoproduction.Comment: 22 pages, incl. 6 figures, to be published in Z. Phys.
Contemporary integrative taxonomy for sexually deprived protists: A case study of Trachelomonas (Euglenaceae) from western Ukraine
As many other protist groups, euglenophytes are prone to false identification based solely on morphology because of a limited amount of morphological features and cryptic speciation. One of the supposedly completely asexual groups within the freshwater phototrophic representatives of euglenophytes is Trachelomonas , capable of forming an inorganic shell around its cell (i.e., the lorica). The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants regulates the taxonomy not only of flowering plants, but explicitly also of phototrophic protists, and provides powerful tools to resolve various taxonomic challenges. To exemplify some of the problems and potential solutions, a number of Trachelomonas strains were collected from the muddy, lakeârich region of Dobrostany and cultivated under stable laboratory conditions. Being a type locality of 58 unclarified Trachelomonas names, this region in western Ukraine is of great taxonomic importance. Based on light and electron microscopy, and on RAxML and MrBayes phylogenetics using multiple loci and a representative taxon sample, a detailed description of investigated strains and their systematic placement is provided. Morphologically, the strains differed slightly but consistently in minute characters such as size, lorica shape and ornamentation. The presently most comprehensive molecular tree of the Euglenaceae indicated to the existence of at least five different species present in the newly investigated samples, although they were collected from localities in very close vicinity to each other and at the same date. Based on morphological comparisons with type illustrations of species validly described 100 or more years ago, biological material was used to epitypify three names of Trachelomonas , eternally linking morphology with reliable genetic information. This taxonomic application is one of the powerful methods to clarify ambiguous scientific names, which has particular importance in characterâpoor protists such as the euglenophytes
Studies of the Response of the Prototype CMS Hadron Calorimeter, Including Magnetic Field Effects, to Pion, Electron, and Muon Beams
We report on the response of a prototype CMS hadron calorimeter module to
charged particle beams of pions, muons, and electrons with momenta up to 375
GeV/c. The data were taken at the H2 and H4 beamlines at CERN in 1995 and 1996.
The prototype sampling calorimeter used copper absorber plates and scintillator
tiles with wavelength shifting fibers for readout. The effects of a magnetic
field of up to 3 Tesla on the response of the calorimeter to muons, electrons,
and pions are presented, and the effects of an upstream lead tungstate crystal
electromagnetic calorimeter on the linearity and energy resolution of the
combined calorimetric system to hadrons are evaluated. The results are compared
with Monte Carlo simulations and are used to optimize the choice of total
absorber depth, sampling frequency, and longitudinal readout segmentation.Comment: 89 pages, 41 figures, to be published in NIM, corresponding author: P

Lambda and Antilambda polarization from deep inelastic muon scattering
We report results of the first measurements of Lambda and Antilambda
polarization produced in deep inelastic polarized muon scattering on the
nucleon. The results are consistent with an expected trend towards positive
polarization with increasing x_F. The polarizations of Lambda and Antilambda
appear to have opposite signs. A large negative polarization for Lambda at low
positive x_F is observed and is not explained by existing models.A possible

Increased risk of osteoporosis and femoral neck fractures in patients with familial Mediterranean feverâa large retrospective cohort study
Objectives
The direct impact of inflammatory conditions and their therapy with corticosteroids contribute to an increased risk of osteoporosis with associated fractures. Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disorder not commonly treated with corticosteroids. Evidence regarding FMF association with osteoporosis and femur fractures is anecdotal. We aimed to evaluate the incidence and risk of osteoporosis and femoral neck fracture in FMF patients compared with the general population.
Methods
A retrospective cohort study using the electronic database of Clalit Health Services of all FMF patients first diagnosed between 2000 and 2016 and controls was conducted including age- and sex-matched controls in a 1:1 ratio. Follow-up continued until the first diagnosis of osteoporosis or fracture. Risk for these conditions was compared using univariate and multivariate Cox regression models.
Results
A total of 9769 FMF patients were followed for a median period of 12.5âyears. Of these, 304 FMF patients were diagnosed with osteoporosis compared with 191 controls, resulting in an incidence rate (per 10â000 persons-years) of 28.8 and 17.8, respectively, and a crude hazard ratio of 1.62 (95% CI 1.35, 1.93; Pâ<â0.001). Patients were diagnosed with osteoporosis at a considerably younger age than controls [60.1 (s.d. 12.4) vs 62.5 (s.d. 11.0) years; Pâ=â0.028]. A total of 56 FMF patients were diagnosed with femoral neck fracture compared with 35 controls, resulting in an incidence rate of 5.3 and 3.3, respectively, and a crude HR of 1.60 (95% CI 1.05, 2.44; Pâ<â0.05).
Conclusion
FMF patients are at increased risk for osteoporosis and consequently femur fracture. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering bone health in the management of FMF patients
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Search for New Physics with Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least
three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data
sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns
collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector
at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model
backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are
presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard
model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new
particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets
- âŠ
