    Diatom and silicoflagellate fluxes at the Walvis Ridge: An environment influenced by coastal upwelling in the Benguela system

    Seasonal fluctuations in the total particle, biogenic opal, diatom and silicoflagellate fluxes were observed in sediment traps deployed at 599 m and 1648 m in the Walvis Ridge area, within the Benguela upwelling system, from March 1989 to March 1990 (station WR 2: 20°02.8′S, 09°09.3′E). Fluxes were directly related to wind stress variations (wind maxima preceding flux maxima by several weeks), and inversely related to SST changes (derived from measured concentrations of C37 alkenones; range: 14.6°–23.6°C). The biogenic particle composition at different depths reflected the complicated hydrology of the area with a combination of tropical, temperate and subantarctic water masses. Biogenic opal content varied from about 2 to 12% of the total mass flux in the upper trap and from about 4 to 17% in the lower trap. Diatoms were the main contributor to the opal fraction (mean daily flux of ca. 5.5 * 106 valves m−2 day−1), followed by silicoflagellates (ca. 2.6 * 105 skeletons m−2 day−1). Two seasonal maxima, in May and June (austral autumn) and from October to November (austral spring), were observed; silicoflagellates yielded also a third moderate maximum in August/September (austral winter). At 1648 m fluxes peaked from May to July (data were available for the period 18 Mar to 27 Aug 1989 only). Few diatoms were abundant; 19 taxa accounted for 50% of all the diatoms identified, and about 32 for the 75% level. Specific diversity of diatoms at 599 m was highest during times of lowest fluxes, in the austral winter, late spring and summer. The diatom taxa occurring at 599 m and at 1648 m were the same, with some flux enrichment with depth due to advection of particles into the lower trap by resuspension and downslope movement. The relatively high concentrations of the Antarctic-Subantarctic species Fragilariopsis kerguelensis in the upper trap solely, was probably linked to selective entrainment and transport within a ring of southerly origin (south of the Subantarctic/Subtropical Convergence Zone). The enrichment of moderately resistant and robust taxa in the sediments in conjunction with the rarity or absence of delicate taxa points to preferential concentration in the sediments of some taxa and dissolution of others. The occurrence of phytoliths in the traps and in the sediment sample can be linked to the “berg” winds, which are typical for the entire Benguela region during fall and winter

    Life cycle assessment (LCA) of a battery home storage system based on primary data

    While the market for battery home storage systems (HSS) is growing rapidly, there are still few well-modelled life cycle assessment (LCA) studies available for quantifying their potential environmental benefits and impacts. Existing studies mainly rely on data for electric vehicles and often lack a thorough modelling approach, especially regarding the peripheral components. This paper presents a full cradle to grave LCA of a Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery HSS based on primary data obtained by part-to-part dismantling of an existing commercial system with a focus on the impact of the peripheral components. Additionally, alternative battery chemistries (Sodium ion battery (SIB) and two lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxides, (NMC811,and NMC622) are investigated under the consideration of the same periphery. This approach allows a comprehensive comparison between present and emerging cell chemistries that can be potentially considered for an HSS. The total greenhouse gas emissions of the HSS are 84 g CO2eq/KWh of electricity delivered over its lifetime in a residential PV application, or 31 g CO2eq/KWh over lifetime when excluding the use-phase impact. The peripheral components contribute between 37% and 85% to the total gross manufacturing impacts of the HSS, depending on the considered cell chemistry and the impact category. Especially the inverter plays an important role, and its impacts are significantly higher than those obtained when using the standard ecoinvent dataset, indicating that the contribution of power electronics might often be underestimated when using this dataset. In terms of cell chemistries, the considered SIB turns out to be not yet competitive with LIB chemistries due to its lower energy density and lifetime, but might become so when reaching similar lifetimes

    Limits on Pluto’s ring system from the June 12 2006 stellar occultation and implications for the New Horizons impact hazard

    The Pluto system passed in front of a 15th magnitude star on 12 June 2006. We observed this occultation from the 3.9 m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), and took photometric observations every 100 ms for 3 h. Our three-hour baseline of data provides among the longest and highest-quality occultation dataset of the Pluto system ever taken. Results on Pluto’s atmospheric structure from these data have been previously reported (Young, E.F. [2008]. Astron. J. 136, 1757–1769). Here we report on limits for rings, ring arcs, and small satellites within the system. We find a 3σ3σ upper limit on the normal optical depth of τ<0.07τ<0.07 for narrow rings of width 2.4 km, and τ<5×10-3τ<5×10-3 for rings of width 1500 km. We also detect no discrete objects of radius 220 m or larger along the occultation path. Motivated by the upcoming flyby of New Horizons through the Pluto system, we estimate the dust impact hazard to the spacecraft based on our optical depth limits and those derived from imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/icarushb201

    The Rise of Massive Red Galaxies: the color-magnitude and color-stellar mass diagrams for z < ~2 from the MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC)

    We present the color-magnitude and color-stellar mass diagrams for galaxies with z_phot < ~2, based on a K < 22 (AB) catalog of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS) from the MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC). Our main sample of 7840 galaxies contains 1297 M_* > 10^11 M_Sol galaxies in the range 0.2 < z_phot < 1.8. We show empirically that this catalog is approximately complete for M_* > 10^11 M_Sol galaxies for z_phot < 1.8. For this mass-limited sample, we show that the locus of the red sequence color-stellar mass relation evolves as Del(u-r) ~ (-0.44+/-0.02) z_phot for z_phot ~1.3, however, we are no longer able to reliably distinguish red and blue subpopulations from the observed color distribution; we show that this would require much deeper near infrared data. At 1.5 < z_phot 10^11 M_Sol galaxies is ~50% of the local value, with a red fraction of ~33%. Making a parametric fit to the observed evolution, we find n_tot(z) ~ (1+z_phot)^(-0.52+/-0.12(+/-0.20)). We find stronger evolution in the red fraction: f_red(z) ~ (1+z_phot)^(-1.17+/-0.18(+/-0.21)). Through a series of sensitivity analyses, we show that the most important sources of systematic error are: 1. systematic differences in the analysis of the z~0 and z>>0 samples; 2. systematic effects associated with details of the photometric redshift calculation; and 3. uncertainties in the photometric calibration. With this in mind, we show that our results based on photometric redshifts are consistent with a completely independent analysis which does not require redshift information for individual galaxies. Our results suggest that, at most, 1/5 of local red sequence galaxies with M_* >10^11 M_Sol were already in place at z ~ 2.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 31 pages in emulateapj format; 18 figues (14 in main text).     The second data release of the INT Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS DR2)

    The INT/WFC Photometric Hα Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) is a 1800 deg2 imaging survey covering Galactic latitudes |b| < 5° and longitudes ℓ = 30°–215° in the r, i, and Hα filters using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in La Palma. We present the first quality-controlled and globally calibrated source catalogue derived from the survey, providing single-epoch photometry for 219 million unique sources across 92 per cent of the footprint. The observations were carried out between 2003 and 2012 at a median seeing of 1.1 arcsec (sampled at 0.33 arcsec pixel−1) and to a mean 5σ depth of 21.2 (r), 20.0 (i), and 20.3 (Hα) in the Vega magnitude system. We explain the data reduction and quality control procedures, describe and test the global re-calibration, and detail the construction of the new catalogue. We show that the new calibration is accurate to 0.03 mag (root mean square) and recommend a series of quality criteria to select accurate data from the catalogue. Finally, we demonstrate the ability of the catalogue's unique (r − Hα, r − i) diagram to (i) characterize stellar populations and extinction regimes towards different Galactic sightlines and (ii) select and quantify Hα emission-line objects. IPHAS is the first survey to offer comprehensive CCD photometry of point sources across the Galactic plane at visible wavelengths, providing the much-needed counterpart to recent infrared surveys

    M/L and Color Evolution for A Deep Sample of M* Cluster Galaxies at z~1: The Formation Epoch and the Tilt of the Fundamental Plane

    We have measured velocity dispersions for a sample of 36 galaxies with J < 21.2 or Mr < -20.6 mag in MS1054-03, a massive cluster of galaxies at z = 0.83. Our data are of uniformly high quality down to our selection limit, our 16-hour exposures typically yielding errors of only \delta(dispersion)~10% for L* and fainter galaxies. By combining our measurements with data from the literature, we have 53 cluster galaxies with measured dispersions, and HST/ACS-derived sizes, colors and surface brightnesses. This sample is complete for the typical L* galaxy at z~1, unlike most previous z~1 cluster samples which are complete only for the massive cluster members (>1e11 M_sun). We find no evidence for a change in the tilt of the fundamental plane (FP). Nor do we find evidence for evolution in the slope of the color-dispersion relation and M/L_B-dispersion relations; measuring evolution at a fixed dispersion should minimize the impact of size evolution found in other work. The M/L_B at fixed dispersion evolves by \Delta log10 M/L_B=-0.50 +/- 0.03 between z=0.83 and z=0.02 or d(log10 M/L_B)=-0.60 +/- 0.04 dz, and we find \Delta (U-V)_z=-0.24 +/- 0.02 mag at fixed dispersion in the rest-frame, matching the expected evolution in M/L_B within 2.25 standard deviations. The implied formation redshift from both the color and M/L_B evolution is z*=2.0 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.3 (sys), during the epoch in which the cosmic star-formation activity peaked, with the systematic uncertainty showing the dependence of z* on the assumptions we make about the stellar populations. The lack of evolution in either the tilt of the FP or in the M/L- and color-dispersion relations imply that the formation epoch depends weakly on mass, ranging from z*=2.3 +1.3 -0.3 at 300 km/s to z*=1.7 +0.3 -0.2 at 160 km/s and implies that the IMF similarly varies slowly with galaxy mass.Comment: revised; typos corrected, references updated, and other cosmetic changes to meet ApJ format ApJ accepted, 22 pages in emulate ApJ format, 8 color figures, 1 b/w figur

    Hypoxic Environment and Paired Hierarchical 3D and 2D Models of Pediatric H3.3-Mutated Gliomas Recreate the Patient Tumor Complexity.

    BACKGROUND:Pediatric high-grade gliomas (pHGGs) are facing a very dismal prognosis and representative pre-clinical models are needed for new treatment strategies. Here, we examined the relevance of collecting functional, genomic, and metabolomics data to validate patient-derived models in a hypoxic microenvironment. METHODS:From our biobank of pediatric brain tumor-derived models, we selected 11 pHGGs driven by the histone H3.3K28M mutation. We compared the features of four patient tumors to their paired cell lines and mouse xenografts using NGS (next generation sequencing), aCGH (array comparative genomic hybridization), RNA sequencing, WES (whole exome sequencing), immunocytochemistry, and HRMAS (high resolution magic angle spinning) spectroscopy. We developed a multicellular in vitro model of cell migration to mimic the brain hypoxic microenvironment. The live cell technology Incucyte© was used to assess drug responsiveness in variable oxygen conditions. RESULTS:The concurrent 2D and 3D cultures generated from the same tumor sample exhibited divergent but complementary features, recreating the patient intra-tumor complexity. Genomic and metabolomic data described the metabolic changes during pHGG progression and supported hypoxia as an important key to preserve the tumor metabolism in vitro and cell dissemination present in patients. The neurosphere features preserved tumor development and sensitivity to treatment. CONCLUSION:We proposed a novel multistep work for the development and validation of patient-derived models, considering the immature and differentiated content and the tumor microenvironment of pHGGs

    Rechargeable Batteries of the Future—The State of the Art from a BATTERY 2030+ Perspective

    The development of new batteries has historically been achieved through discovery and development cycles based on the intuition of the researcher, followed by experimental trial and error—often helped along by serendipitous breakthroughs. Meanwhile, it is evident that new strategies are needed to master the ever-growing complexity in the development of battery systems, and to fast-track the transfer of findings from the laboratory into commercially viable products. This review gives an overview over the future needs and the current state-of-the art of five research pillars of the European Large-Scale Research Initiative BATTERY 2030+, namely 1) Battery Interface Genome in combination with a Materials Acceleration Platform (BIG-MAP), progress toward the development of 2) self-healing battery materials, and methods for operando, 3) sensing to monitor battery health. These subjects are complemented by an overview over current and up-coming strategies to optimize 4) manufacturability of batteries and efforts toward development of a circular battery economy through implementation of 5) recyclability aspects in the design of the battery

    First circumpolar assessment of Arctic freshwater phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity : Spatial patterns and environmental factors

    Arctic freshwaters are facing multiple environmental pressures, including rapid climate change and increasing land-use activities. Freshwater plankton assemblages are expected to reflect the effects of these stressors through shifts in species distributions and changes to biodiversity. These changes may occur rapidly due to the short generation times and high dispersal capabilities of both phyto- and zooplankton. Spatial patterns and contemporary trends in plankton diversity throughout the circumpolar region were assessed using data from more than 300 lakes in the U.S.A. (Alaska), Canada, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. The main objectives of this study were: (1) to assess spatial patterns of plankton diversity focusing on pelagic communities; (2) to assess dominant component of beta diversity (turnover or nestedness); (3) to identify which environmental factors best explain diversity; and (4) to provide recommendations for future monitoring and assessment of freshwater plankton communities across the Arctic region. Phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton diversity varied substantially across the Arctic and was positively related to summer air temperature. However, for zooplankton, the positive correlation between summer temperature and species numbers decreased with increasing latitude. Taxonomic richness was lower in the high Arctic compared to the sub- and low Arctic for zooplankton but this pattern was less clear for phytoplankton. Fennoscandia and inland regions of Russia represented hotspots for, respectively, phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity, whereas isolated regions had lower taxonomic richness. Ecoregions with high alpha diversity generally also had high beta diversity, and turnover was the most important component of beta diversity in all ecoregions. For both phytoplankton and zooplankton, climatic variables were the most important environmental factors influencing diversity patterns, consistent with previous studies that examined shorter temperature gradients. However, barriers to dispersal may have also played a role in limiting diversity on islands. A better understanding of how diversity patterns are determined by colonisation history, environmental variables, and biotic interactions requires more monitoring data with locations dispersed evenly across the circumpolar Arctic. Furthermore, the importance of turnover in regional diversity patterns indicates that more extensive sampling is required to fully characterise the species pool of Arctic lakes.Peer reviewe
