Filter Efficiency and Pressure Testing of Returned ISS Bacterial Filter Elements (BFEs)
The air quality control equipment aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and future deep space exploration vehicles provide the vital function of maintaining a clean cabin environment for the crew and the hardware. This becomes a serious challenge in pressurized space compartments since no outside air ventilation is possible, and a larger particulate load is imposed on the filtration system due to lack of sedimentation. The ISS Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) system architecture in the U.S. Segment uses a distributed particulate filtration approach consisting of traditional High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters deployed at multiple locations in each U.S. Seg-ment module; these filters are referred to as Bacterial Filter Elements, or BFEs. In our previous work, we presented results of efficiency and pressure drop measurements for a sample set of two returned BFEs with a service life of 2.5 years. In this follow-on work, we present similar efficiency, pressure drop, and leak tests results for a larger sample set of six returned BFEs. The results of this work can aid the ISS Program in managing BFE logistics inventory through the stations planned lifetime as well as provide insight for managing filter element logistics for future exploration missions. These results also can provide meaningful guidance for particulate filter designs under consideration for future deep space exploration missions
Compositional Changes in Two Small Mammal Communities During Succession in Southeastern Virginia
Changes in the composition of two small mammal communities were studied during 8 and 9 years of ecological succession in southern Chesapeake. Virginia. Using monthly live-trapping on grids of similar size and history since their abandonment as agricultural fields, we learned that house mice were early colonists on one grid but not the other. Two species of herbivorous rodent and the granivorous eastern harvest mouse were numerically dominant on both grids across the study. Some species disappeared early on one grid but persisted to the end at the other. The two arboreal small mammals, golden and white-footed mice, were most predictable between sites, showing up at year 8, after significant woody elements were present on the grids. The greatest abundances of small mammals (and probably greatest total biomass too) were seen between years 4 and 6 of ecological succession

Small Earth Imaging Spectrometer
Advances in several key sensor technologies make it possible now to build a high performance, very compact and low cost imaging spectrometer for spacebourne terrestrial remote sensing. We describe an instrument based on a highly innovative optical design that incorporates state of the art focal plane arrays, electronics, focal plane cooling and dimensionally stable ceramics for the optical elements and structure. The instrument is optimized for viewing the earth\u27s solid surface and adjacent coastal oceans. It has very high signal-to-noise performance over the full spectral range covered, from 400 to 2450 nanometers (nm). Spectral sampling is in 200 10-nm wide, contiguous bands. The instrument combines a high spatial resolution panchromatic imaging system with a modest spatial resolution imaging spectrometer. It weighs 25 kg, requires less than 100 watts of power, and is approximately 30 by 20 by 10 cm in dimension, fitting well within the capacity of Pegasus-class small spacecraft missions. The instrument is well suited to support studies in earth system science as well as commercial remote sensing. Several applications in these areas will be highlighted to set in context the performance requirements that were used to define the sensor design and choice of sensor technologies
VAST: An ASKAP Survey for Variables and Slow Transients
The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will give us an
unprecedented opportunity to investigate the transient sky at radio
wavelengths. In this paper we present VAST, an ASKAP survey for Variables and
Slow Transients. VAST will exploit the wide-field survey capabilities of ASKAP
to enable the discovery and investigation of variable and transient phenomena
from the local to the cosmological, including flare stars, intermittent
pulsars, X-ray binaries, magnetars, extreme scattering events, interstellar
scintillation, radio supernovae and orphan afterglows of gamma ray bursts. In
addition, it will allow us to probe unexplored regions of parameter space where
new classes of transient sources may be detected. In this paper we review the
known radio transient and variable populations and the current results from
blind radio surveys. We outline a comprehensive program based on a multi-tiered
survey strategy to characterise the radio transient sky through detection and
monitoring of transient and variable sources on the ASKAP imaging timescales of
five seconds and greater. We also present an analysis of the expected source

Amplification of Inflammation by Lubricin Deficiency Implicated in Incident, Erosive Gout Independent of Hyperuricemia
Objective
In gout, hyperuricemia promotes urate crystal deposition that stimulates the NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-1β-mediated arthritis. Incident gout without background hyperuricemia is rarely reported. To identify hyperuricemia-independent mechanisms driving gout incidence and progression, we characterized erosive urate crystalline inflammatory arthritis meeting ACR/EULAR gout classification criteria in a normouricemic young adult female. Methods
Whole genome sequencing, quantitative proteomics, whole blood RNA-seq, and IL-1β-induced murine knee synovitis characterized proband candidate genes, biomarkers, and pathogenic mechanisms. Results
Lubricin was attenuated in proband serum, associated with elevated acute phase reactants and inflammatory whole blood transcripts and transcriptional pathways. The proband had predicted damaging gene variants of NLRP3 and of Inter-Alpha-Trypsin Inhibitor Heavy Chain 3, an inhibitor of lubricin-degrading Cathepsin G. Proband serum protein interactome network changes supported enhanced lubricin degradation, with Cathepsin G activity increased relative to its inhibitors SERPINB6 and Thrombospondin1. TLR2 activation suppressed cultured human synovial fibroblast lubricin mRNA and release (p\u3c0.01). Lubricin blunted urate crystal precipitation, and IL-1β induction of xanthine oxidase and urate in cultured macrophages (p\u3c0.001). In lubricin-deficient mice, IL-1β knee injection increased xanthine oxidase positive synovial resident M1 macrophages (p\u3c0.05). Conclusion
We linked normouricemic erosive gout to attenuated lubricin, with impaired control of Cathepsin G activity, compounded by deleterious NLRP3 variants. Lubricin suppressed monosodium urate crystallization, and blunted IL-1β-induced increases in macrophage xanthine oxidase and urate. Collective activities of articular lubricin that could limit incident and erosive gouty arthritis independently of hyperuricemia are subject to disruption by inflammation, activated Cathepsin G, and synovial fibroblast TLR2 signaling
MusMorph, a database of standardized mouse morphology data for morphometric meta-analyses
Complex morphological traits are the product of many genes with transient or lasting developmental effects that interact in anatomical context. Mouse models are a key resource for disentangling such effects, because they offer myriad tools for manipulating the genome in a controlled environment. Unfortunately, phenotypic data are often obtained using laboratory-specific protocols, resulting in self-contained datasets that are difficult to relate to one another for larger scale analyses. To enable meta-analyses of morphological variation, particularly in the craniofacial complex and brain, we created MusMorph, a database of standardized mouse morphology data spanning numerous genotypes and developmental stages, including E10.5, E11.5, E14.5, E15.5, E18.5, and adulthood. To standardize data collection, we implemented an atlas-based phenotyping pipeline that combines techniques from image registration, deep learning, and morphometrics. Alongside stage-specific atlases, we provide aligned micro-computed tomography images, dense anatomical landmarks, and segmentations (if available) for each specimen (N = 10,056). Our workflow is open-source to encourage transparency and reproducible data collection. LSST Science Book, Version 2.0
A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint
magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science
opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST)
will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field
of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over
20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with
fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a
total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic
parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book
discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a
broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and
outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies,
the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local
Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the
properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then
turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to
z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and
baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to

Comparative genomics reveals insights into avian genome evolution and adaptation
Birds are the most species-rich class of tetrapod vertebrates and have wide relevance across many research fields. We explored bird macroevolution using full genomes from 48 avian species representing all major extant clades. The avian genome is principally characterized by its constrained size, which predominantly arose because of lineage-specific erosion of repetitive elements, large segmental deletions, and gene loss. Avian genomes furthermore show a remarkably high degree of evolutionary stasis at the levels of nucleotide sequence, gene synteny, and chromosomal structure. Despite this pattern of conservation, we detected many non-neutral evolutionary changes in protein-coding genes and noncoding regions. These analyses reveal that pan-avian genomic diversity covaries with adaptations to different lifestyles and convergent evolution of traits
