This report has been developed under the context of the curricular course unit of Supervised Teaching Practice, inserted in the master’s degree of Pre-School Education and 1st Cycle of Basic Education of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. This practice occurred in a school of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, located in the district of Viana do Castelo, in a class with 24 students of the 4th grade. The study conducted focused on the teaching-learning of the course unit area of Portuguese, resorting to the utilization of digital educational resources, in accordance with the theoretical board Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), developed by Koehler and Mishra (2006). The thematic choice studied has its origin in the socially recognised importance of today’s technologies, particularly, the relevance of its integration in the teaching-learning process, as a motivational vehicle and development of meaningful learnings. In this sense, the problem faced with this investigation is analysing the influence that TPACK knowledge assumes in the construction of digital educational resources and their implementation in the Portuguese class and its different domains: Speaking, Grammar, Reading & Writing and Literary Education. As a way of guiding the study, two investigation questions were outlined: 1) What technological resources can be adequate to each domain in the teaching-learning process of the course unit of Portuguese? and 2) In what way does the TPACK referential reveal itself adequate to the integration of digital educational resources in the teaching of the different domains of the Portuguese program of the 1st CEB? This study fits into the interpretive paradigm, having opted in a qualitative methodology, privileging data gathering through observations, questionnaires, audio-visual logs (audio, video and photography) and participant’s documents. The results obtained reveal the potential of DER when correctly integrated in the teaching-learning process, as well as the importance of TPACK’s mobilization in the planning and implementation of digital educational resources in Portuguese classes

Background: The myofascial pain syndrome affects up to 85% of the population, having myofascial trigger points a central role in the pathophysiology of this phenomenon. With the widespread of the use of manual ischemic compression technique for the treatment of miofascial trigger points, it is relevant to evaluate its effectiveness, according to the available evidence. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of ischemic compression technique and its influence on the outcomes pain intensity and pressure pain threshold, in subjects with trigger points. Search Strategy: PubMed (MEDLINE), PEDro, The Cochrane Library and EBSCO (CINAHL Discuss and Sport). Methodology: The inclusion criteria were randomized control trials evaluating the effectiveness of ischemic compression technique in the treatment of trigger points, either alone or in comparison with other treatment techniques, published in english since 2004 and with PEDro Scores ≥ 5. Results: Five articles were selected for this review. Only three had both pain intensity and pressure pain threshold as outcome. The conclusions of the studies were based mainly on a comparison between baseline and final intra-group results, indicating a reduction in pain intensity and an increase in pressure pain threshold for isquemic compression technique. However, comparison techniques draw similar conclusions, with no statistically significant differences between the two. Conclusions: Available evidence is not enough to support the effectiveness of ischemic compression technique in the treatment of trigger points

We aimed to investigate whether any anthropometric differences exist and if they persist over time. Methods: We conducted an observational study of Portuguese children (both sexes) diagnosed with CPP between January 2000 and December 2017, using a digital platform, in order to analyze the influence of GnRHa treatment on BMI-SD score (BMI-SDS). Results: Of the 241 patients diagnosed with CPP, we assessed 92 patients (8% boys) in this study. At baseline, 39% of the patients were overweight. BMI-SDS increased with treatment for girls but then diminished 1 year after stopping GnRHa therapy (p = 0.018). BMI-SDS variation at the end of treatment was negatively correlated with BMI-SDS at baseline (p < 0.001). Boys grew taller and faster during treatment than did girls (p < 0.001), and therefore, their BMI-SDS trajectory might be different. Conclusions: This study showed an increase of body weight gain during GnRHa treatment only in girls, which reversed just 1 year after stopping treatment. The overall gain in BMI-SDS with treatment is associated with baseline BMI-SDS.publishersversionpublishe

Cabbage and fermented vegetables : From death rate heterogeneity in countries to candidates for mitigation strategies of severe COVID-19

    Get PDF
Large differences in COVID-19 death rates exist between countries and between regions of the same country. Some very low death rate countries such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, or the Balkans have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods. Although biases exist when examining ecological studies, fermented vegetables or cabbage have been associated with low death rates in European countries. SARS-CoV-2 binds to its receptor, the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). As a result of SARS-CoV-2 binding, ACE2 downregulation enhances the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT(1)R) axis associated with oxidative stress. This leads to insulin resistance as well as lung and endothelial damage, two severe outcomes of COVID-19. The nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) is the most potent antioxidant in humans and can block in particular the AT(1)R axis. Cabbage contains precursors of sulforaphane, the most active natural activator of Nrf2. Fermented vegetables contain many lactobacilli, which are also potent Nrf2 activators. Three examples are: kimchi in Korea, westernized foods, and the slum paradox. It is proposed that fermented cabbage is a proof-of-concept of dietary manipulations that may enhance Nrf2-associated antioxidant effects, helpful in mitigating COVID-19 severity.Peer reviewe

Nrf2-interacting nutrients and COVID-19 : time for research to develop adaptation strategies

    Get PDF
There are large between- and within-country variations in COVID-19 death rates. Some very low death rate settings such as Eastern Asia, Central Europe, the Balkans and Africa have a common feature of eating large quantities of fermented foods whose intake is associated with the activation of the Nrf2 (Nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2) anti-oxidant transcription factor. There are many Nrf2-interacting nutrients (berberine, curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, quercetin, resveratrol, sulforaphane) that all act similarly to reduce insulin resistance, endothelial damage, lung injury and cytokine storm. They also act on the same mechanisms (mTOR: Mammalian target of rapamycin, PPAR gamma:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, NF kappa B: Nuclear factor kappa B, ERK: Extracellular signal-regulated kinases and eIF2 alpha:Elongation initiation factor 2 alpha). They may as a result be important in mitigating the severity of COVID-19, acting through the endoplasmic reticulum stress or ACE-Angiotensin-II-AT(1)R axis (AT(1)R) pathway. Many Nrf2-interacting nutrients are also interacting with TRPA1 and/or TRPV1. Interestingly, geographical areas with very low COVID-19 mortality are those with the lowest prevalence of obesity (Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia). It is tempting to propose that Nrf2-interacting foods and nutrients can re-balance insulin resistance and have a significant effect on COVID-19 severity. It is therefore possible that the intake of these foods may restore an optimal natural balance for the Nrf2 pathway and may be of interest in the mitigation of COVID-19 severity

    Pulmonary Amyloidosis: A Diagnostic Challenge

    No full text
Amyloidosis is characterized by amyloid extracellular deposition in organs and tissues. Pulmonary involvement is a rare manifestation of the disease and it can be focal or as part of systemic amyloidosis. We report two cases. Case 1: 71 year-old female with bronchiectasis and Sjogren’s syndrome, who complained of anorexia, weight loss and a productive cough. The diagnostic study included a surgical lung biopsy and histological examination demonstrated pulmonary amyloidosis. Case 2: 83 year-old male patient, ex-smoker, asymptomatic, whose routine chest x-ray showed a nodular opacity in the right lung field. A transthoracic biopsy revealed an amyloid lung tumor. These cases illustrate a rare disease which in Case 1 also coexisted with Sjögren’s syndrome and bronchiectasis. The most important differential diagnosis is cancer and so a definitive diagnosis is essential, as amyloidosis is usually benign and indolent

DEPDC5 variant in focal cortical dysplasia: a case report and review of the literature

    No full text
Germline and 2-hit brain somatic variants in DEPDC5 gene, a negative regulator of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, are increasingly recognized in patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). Next-generation targeted sequencing identified a heterozygous germline variant in DEPDC5 gene (c.3241A>C, p.Thr1081Pro), classified as of unknown significance, in a patient with clinical features compatible with DEPDC5 phenotype (FCD, focal epilepsy, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline intellectual functioning). This missense variant has previously been reported in two other epileptic patients. Although interpretation of missense variants remains a challenge, DEPDC5 variants in patients with FCD and epilepsy cannot be neglected. Null variants were the most frequently reported in FCD patients, but missense variants have been described as well. The recognition of DEPDC5 phenotype and the appropriate interpretation of the detected variants are essential, since it may have important treatment implications in the near future, namely the use of mTOR inhibitors
