    Always on my Mind: The Role of Automatic Thoughts in the Experience and Development of Passions

    The present research explored how automatic thoughts about passions influence the ways in which people pursue them. Drawing from the dualistic model of passions and incentive-salience theory, I predicted that positive emotions experienced during an activity should facilitate positive automatic thoughts about that activity. Those thoughts should in turn facilitate wanting and build resources that increase the positive-emotion yield of subsequent behavior. Studies 1 and 2 revealed that people perceive more positive automatic thoughts about harmonious than obsessive passions. In Study 3, positive automatic thoughts mediated the effect of positive emotions on behavior. Studies 4 and 5 documented that positive automatic thoughts predict increases in harmonious passion over time and vice versa. Taken together, these findings characterize the role of automatic thoughts as they relate to the pursuit of passions in particular and desired outcomes in general.Master of Art

    Positive spontaneous thoughts reflect incentive salience

    Despite the abundance of research on unwanted intrusive thoughts, positive spontaneous thoughts have been the subject of very little prior research. The present work aimed to evaluate the role of positive spontaneous thoughts in motivation by exploring their relationship with incentive salience – a property that energizes wanting and approach motivation by rendering cues that are associated with reward more likely to stand out to the individual when encountered in the environment (Berridge, 2007). I reasoned that positive spontaneous thoughts may be concomitants of incentive salience, and as such, they may mediate the effect of liking on wanting. The three studies discussed in Chapter 2 tested that hypothesis using a variety of measures and methods and revealed that positive spontaneous thoughts do indeed mediate the relationship between liking something and wanting it. Given that positive spontaneous thoughts were related to wanting as predicted, I explored whether they may play an active role in energizing wanting rather than merely co-occurring with incentive salience. The experiment discussed in Chapter 3 provided a preliminary answer to that question; participants who believed that their spontaneous thoughts about a target activity were especially positive planned to engage in that activity more often over the coming week than participants who had no such perception about their spontaneous thoughts. Collectively, these studies demonstrate an important role of positive spontaneous thoughts in shaping approach motivation.     Skin Cancer and UV Exposure-Related Behaviors Among Appalachian and Non-Appalachian Adults

    Introduction: Appalachian communities experience elevated rates of cancer incidence and mortality relative to other regions in the U.S. Specifically, melanoma mortality rates are higher in Appalachia compared to the national average, despite comparable incidence rates. Purpose: To examine differences in self-reported history of skin cancer and prevalence of two UV exposure behaviors between Appalachian and non-Appalachian adults in a nationally representative sample. Methods: Data are from four cross-sectional cycles of the Health Information National Trends Survey (2011–2014) (N=14,451). We examined sunscreen use and tanning bed use, and self-reported history of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Descriptive and weighted multivariable analyses were conducted to examine sunscreen and tanning bed use, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Approximately 8% of the study sample resided in Appalachia (n=1,015). Self-reported melanoma (0.6%) and non-melanoma (3.2%) skin cancer histories were low among Appalachians and did not differ statistically from non-Appalachians (p\u3e0.05). Only 21.2% of Appalachians reported using sunscreen often or always when going outside for more than one hour on a warm, sunny day compared to 27.4% of non-Appalachians (p\u3c0.05). In separate multivariable logistic regressions, Appalachians reported lower odds of sunscreen use compared to non-Appalachian (OR=0.76, p=0.04), but there were no regional differences in tanning bed use (OR=1.48, p=0.23) when controlling for sociodemographics and general health status. Implications: Appalachians had comparable histories of self-reported melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer but were less likely to report sunscreen use than non-Appalachians.     A crowd-sourcing approach for the construction of species-specific cell signaling networks

    Motivation: Animal models are important tools in drug discovery and for understanding human biology in general. However, many drugs that initially show promising results in rodents fail in later stages of clinical trials. Understanding the commonalities and differences between human and rat cell signaling networks can lead to better experimental designs, improved allocation of resources and ultimately better drugs. Results: The sbv IMPROVER Species-Specific Network Inference challenge was designed to use the power of the crowds to build two species-specific cell signaling networks given phosphoproteomics, transcriptomics and cytokine data generated from NHBE and NRBE cells exposed to various stimuli. A common literature-inspired reference network with 220 nodes and 501 edges was also provided as prior knowledge from which challenge participants could add or remove edges but not nodes. Such a large network inference challenge not based on synthetic simulations but on real data presented unique difficulties in scoring and interpreting the results. Because any prior knowledge about the networks was already provided to the participants for reference, novel ways for scoring and aggregating the results were developed. Two human and rat consensus networks were obtained by combining all the inferred networks. Further analysis showed that major signaling pathways were conserved between the two species with only isolated components diverging, as in the case of ribosomal S6 kinase RPS6KA1. Overall, the consensus between inferred edges was relatively high with the exception of the downstream targets of transcription factors, which seemed more difficult to predict.     ABA Criminal Justice Section Task Force on College Due Process Rights and Victim Protections: Recommendations for Colleges and Universities in Resolving Allegations of Campus Sexual Misconduct

    The Executive Committee of the ABA Criminal Justice Section commissioned the Task Force on College Due Process Rights and Victim Protections in November 2016. Immediately after, extensive efforts were made to find members that represented all interested parties: victims, the accused, universities, other stakeholders, and national experts. The Task Force was fully constituted in the winter of 2017, and it ended up including two voting members who were originally liaisons from the ABA Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence and the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice.     A controlled trial of implementing a complex mental health intervention for carers of vulnerable young people living in out-of-home care: the ripple project

    BACKGROUND: Out-of-home care (OoHC) refers to young people removed from their families by the state because of abuse, neglect or other adversities. Many of the young people experience poor mental health and social function before, during and after leaving care. Rigorously evaluated interventions are urgently required. This publication describes the protocol for the Ripple project and notes early findings from a controlled trial demonstrating the feasibility of the work. The Ripple project is implementing and evaluating a complex mental health intervention that aims to strengthen the therapeutic capacities of carers and case managers of young people (12-17 years) in OoHC. METHODS: The study is conducted in partnership with mental health, substance abuse and social services in Melbourne, with young people as participants. It has three parts: 1. Needs assessment and implementation of a complex mental health intervention; 2. A 3-year controlled trial of the mental health, social and economic outcomes; and 3. Nested process evaluation of the intervention. RESULTS: Early findings characterising the young people, their carers and case managers and implementing the intervention are available. The trial Wave 1 includes interviews with 176 young people, 52% of those eligible in the study population, 104 carers and 79 case managers. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing and researching an affordable service system intervention appears feasible and likely to be applicable in other places and countries. Success of the intervention will potentially contribute to reducing mental ill-health among these young people, including suicide attempts, self-harm and substance abuse, as well as reducing homelessness, social isolation and contact with the criminal justice system.     TOI-4010: A System of Three Large Short-Period Planets With a Massive Long-Period Companion

    We report the confirmation of three exoplanets transiting TOI-4010 (TIC-352682207), a metal-rich K dwarf observed by TESS in Sectors 24, 25, 52, and 58. We confirm these planets with HARPS-N radial velocity observations and measure their masses with 8 - 12% precision. TOI-4010 b is a sub-Neptune (P=1.3P = 1.3 days, Rp=3.020.08+0.08 RR_{p} = 3.02_{-0.08}^{+0.08}~R_{\oplus}, Mp=11.001.27+1.29 MM_{p} = 11.00_{-1.27}^{+1.29}~M_{\oplus}) in the hot Neptune desert, and is one of the few such planets with known companions. Meanwhile, TOI-4010 c (P=5.4P = 5.4 days, Rp=5.930.12+0.11 RR_{p} = 5.93_{-0.12}^{+0.11}~R_{\oplus}, Mp=20.312.11+2.13 MM_{p} = 20.31_{-2.11}^{+2.13}~M_{\oplus}) and TOI-4010 d (P=14.7P = 14.7 days, Rp=6.180.14+0.15 RR_{p} = 6.18_{-0.14}^{+0.15}~R_{\oplus}, Mp=38.153.22+3.27 MM_{p} = 38.15_{-3.22}^{+3.27}~M_{\oplus}) are similarly-sized sub-Saturns on short-period orbits. Radial velocity observations also reveal a super-Jupiter-mass companion called TOI-4010 e in a long-period, eccentric orbit (P762P \sim 762 days and e0.26e \sim 0.26 based on available observations).     Genetic and phenotypic spectrum associated with IFIH1 gain-of-function

    IFIH1 gain-of-function has been reported as a cause of a type I interferonopathy encompassing a spectrum of autoinflammatory phenotypes including Aicardi–Goutières syndrome and Singleton Merten syndrome. Ascertaining patients through a European and North American collaboration, we set out to describe the molecular, clinical and interferon status of a cohort of individuals with pathogenic heterozygous mutations in IFIH1. We identified 74 individuals from 51 families segregating a total of 27 likely pathogenic mutations in IFIH1. Ten adult individuals, 13.5% of all mutation carriers, were clinically asymptomatic (with seven of these aged over 50 years). All mutations were associated with enhanced type I interferon signaling, including six variants (22%) which were predicted as benign according to multiple in silico pathogenicity programs. The identified mutations cluster close to the ATP binding region of the protein. These data confirm variable expression and nonpenetrance as important characteristics of the IFIH1 genotype, a consistent association with enhanced type I interferon signaling, and a common mutational mechanism involving increased RNA binding affinity or decreased efficiency of ATP hydrolysis and filament disassembly rate

    Multi-ancestry sleep-by-SNP interaction analysis in 126,926 individuals reveals lipid loci stratified by sleep duration.

    Both short and long sleep are associated with an adverse lipid profile, likely through different biological pathways. To elucidate the biology of sleep-associated adverse lipid profile, we conduct multi-ancestry genome-wide sleep-SNP interaction analyses on three lipid traits (HDL-c, LDL-c and triglycerides). In the total study sample (discovery + replication) of 126,926 individuals from 5 different ancestry groups, when considering either long or short total sleep time interactions in joint analyses, we identify 49 previously unreported lipid loci, and 10 additional previously unreported lipid loci in a restricted sample of European-ancestry cohorts. In addition, we identify new gene-sleep interactions for known lipid loci such as LPL and PCSK9. The previously unreported lipid loci have a modest explained variance in lipid levels: most notable, gene-short-sleep interactions explain 4.25% of the variance in triglyceride level. Collectively, these findings contribute to our understanding of the biological mechanisms involved in sleep-associated adverse lipid profiles
