    A simple, fast and accurate screening method to estimate maize (Zea mays L) tolerance to drought at early stages

    There is a great need for the selection of plants with higher drought tolerance, so that fast and effective techniques to identify variations in drought tolerance are mandatory for screening large numbers of genotypes. This work presents a protocol for easy and reliable assessment of responses of maize genotypes to water stress conditions imposed during early stages of development. Three experiments using 11 commercial maize hybrids under four levels of water stress were carried out: i) germination, ii) seedling growth, and iii) early growth bioas- says. Constant and uniform water stress was imposed using solutions of polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000). Plant material was evaluated for several morphological, physiological and biochemical traits and monitored for photosynthetic efficiency. Principal component analysis (PCA) of these joint experiments revealed that germination percentage, early root development and stomatal conductance were the most useful traits for discriminating maize hybrids according to their tolerance to water stress. A subsequent greenhouse assay performed with two hybrids with contrasting responses under soil drying conditions validated the previous results. According to our results, the key of drought tolerance was a rapid response of stomatal conductance, which allowed a longer survival to stress even under severe desiccation. This work provides the researcher with a simple and reliable screening method that could be implemented as a decision support tool in the selection of the most suitable genotypes for cultivation in areas where water availability is a problem, as well as for the selection of tolerant genotypes to early drought in breeding programs

    Random Laser Action in Nd:YAG Crystal Powder Jon

    This work explores the room temperature random stimulated emission at 1.064 mu m of a Nd:YAG crystal powder (Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) in a very simple pump configuration with no assistance from an internal mirror. The laser threshold energy as a function of pump beam area and pump wavelength has been measured, as well as the temporal dynamics of emission pulses. The absolute energy of stimulated emission and the absolute laser slope efficiency have been measured by using a method proposed by the authors.     Influence of Upconversion Processes in the Optically-Induced Inhomogeneous Thermal Behavior of Erbium-Doped Lanthanum Oxysulfide Powders

    The efficient infrared-to-visible upconversion emission present in Er-doped lanthanum oxysulfide crystal powders is used as a fine thermal sensor to determine the influence of upconversion processes on the laser-induced thermal load produced by the pump laser and to assess the potentialities of this material in order to obtain anti-Stokes laser-induced cooling. The analysis of the upconversion emission and excitation spectra as well as the decay curves indicates that energy transfer upconversion is the main mechanism responsible for the green (S-4(3/2)) and red (F-4(9/2)) upconversion luminescence. The dependence on temperature of the intensity ratio of upconversion emission from thermally-coupled H-2(11/2) and S-4(3/2) levels of Er3+ in the 240-300 K temperature range has been used to estimate a relative sensitivity of 1.09 x 10(-2) K-1. Thermal measurements performed on the powder samples by using a thermal infrared camera exhibit a very inhomogeneous heat distribution at the sample surface due to the random distribution of the pumping energy inside the sample as well as to the random properties of the thermal field. The analysis of both spectroscopic and thermal measurements show that after a transient heating induced by the background absorption, cooling of discrete regions by means of anti-Stokes processes can be observed.This work was supported by the Spanish Government under project MAT2013-48246-C2-2-P and Basque Country Government IT-943-16.     RESUMEN: Cantabria se caracteriza por ser una región especialmente rica en yacimientos de época prehistórica. En ellos, se han podido recuperar múltiples evidencias que, con la aplicación de las técnicas metodológicas adecuadas, permiten reconstruir los modos de vida de los grupos humanos del pasado, la explotación que realizaban del medio, su tipo de dieta, su movilidad, así como el tipo de clima y medioambiente en que habitaron, entre otros aspectos. Una de las líneas de investigación más novedosas desarrollada en la región es la Bioarqueología, entendida como el estudio y análisis de restos biológicos procedentes de yacimientos arqueológicos. En este artículo se muestran las diferentes colecciones de referencia de materiales bioarqueológicos que alberga el Laboratorio de Bioarqueología del Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones Prehistóricas de Cantabria (Universidad de Cantabria), así como las investigaciones desarrolladas en dicha institución sobre esta temática en los últimos años.ABSTRACT: Cantabria is a region characterised as especially rich in prehistoric archaeological sites. These sites can be investigated using stateof- the art methodologies, making it possible to reconstruct the way of life of humans in the past, answering questions about diet and mobility, and what the climate and environment was like, amongst other things. One of these newly-developed lines of research in the region is bioarchaeology, which is the study and analysis of biological remains recovered from archaeological sites. This article introduces the different bioarchaeological reference collection materials housed in the Bioarchaeology Laboratory at the International Institute of Prehistoric Research in Cantabria (University of Cantabria), as well as the bioarchaeological research that has been carried out within the institution in the last few years.La investigación llevada a cabo por el grupo de investigadores del Laboratorio de Bioarqueología ha sido posible gracias a diversas fuentes de financiación españolas y europeas.     Effectiveness of an intervention for improving drug prescription in primary care patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy:Study protocol of a cluster randomized clinical trial (Multi-PAP project)

    This study was funded by the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias ISCIII (Grant Numbers PI15/00276, PI15/00572, PI15/00996), REDISSEC (Project Numbers RD12/0001/0012, RD16/0001/0005), and the European Regional Development Fund ("A way to build Europe").Background: Multimorbidity is associated with negative effects both on people's health and on healthcare systems. A key problem linked to multimorbidity is polypharmacy, which in turn is associated with increased risk of partly preventable adverse effects, including mortality. The Ariadne principles describe a model of care based on a thorough assessment of diseases, treatments (and potential interactions), clinical status, context and preferences of patients with multimorbidity, with the aim of prioritizing and sharing realistic treatment goals that guide an individualized management. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a complex intervention that implements the Ariadne principles in a population of young-old patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy. The intervention seeks to improve the appropriateness of prescribing in primary care (PC), as measured by the medication appropriateness index (MAI) score at 6 and 12months, as compared with usual care. Methods/Design: Design:pragmatic cluster randomized clinical trial. Unit of randomization: family physician (FP). Unit of analysis: patient. Scope: PC health centres in three autonomous communities: Aragon, Madrid, and Andalusia (Spain). Population: patients aged 65-74years with multimorbidity (≥3 chronic diseases) and polypharmacy (≥5 drugs prescribed in ≥3months). Sample size: n=400 (200 per study arm). Intervention: complex intervention based on the implementation of the Ariadne principles with two components: (1) FP training and (2) FP-patient interview. Outcomes: MAI score, health services use, quality of life (Euroqol 5D-5L), pharmacotherapy and adherence to treatment (Morisky-Green, Haynes-Sackett), and clinical and socio-demographic variables. Statistical analysis: primary outcome is the difference in MAI score between T0 and T1 and corresponding 95% confidence interval. Adjustment for confounding factors will be performed by multilevel analysis. All analyses will be carried out in accordance with the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: It is essential to provide evidence concerning interventions on PC patients with polypharmacy and multimorbidity, conducted in the context of routine clinical practice, and involving young-old patients with significant potential for preventing negative health outcomes.
