COVID-19 Mitigating Behaviors: The Role of Percieved Threat and Political Party Affiliation
Young adults have high COVID-19 transmission rates and low mitigation practices. Those with low perceived threat and who identify as Republican tend to practice fewer mitigation behaviors, but more research is needed among young adults
The Positive or Negative Impact of Stress: Exploring Differences Among Sociodemographic Groups
Perceptions of stress can affect health and may explain health disparities. Therefore, the differential experience of stress across sociodemographic groups was explored. Those with less education and income had more negative stressors, college educated individuals had more positive stressors than those with a post-college degree, and whites reported more stressors than did minorities
Disentangling within-person changes and individual differences among fundamental need satisfaction, attainment of acquisitive desires, and psychological health
We explored within-person and individual difference associations among basic psychological need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and relatedness), attainment of acquisitive desires (wealth and popularity) and indicators of well- and ill-being. Participants were 198 undergraduates (51% male) who completed an inventory multiple times over a university semester. Analyses revealed that increased satisfaction of all the needs and desires beyond participants’ normal levels, with the exception of relatedness, were associated with greater psychological welfare. Nonetheless, individual differences in well-being were only predicted by psychological need satisfaction, and not by the attainment of acquisitive desires. Hence, the realization of acquisitive desires may elicit within-person increases in psychological welfare; however, satisfying innate needs may be a better bet for long term psychological health
White matter integrity as a predictor of response to treatment in first episode psychosis
The integrity of brain white matter connections is central to a patient's ability to respond to pharmacological interventions. This study tested this hypothesis using a specific measure of white matter integrity, and examining its relationship to treatment response using a prospective design in patients within their first episode of psychosis. Diffusion tensor imaging data were acquired in 63 patients with first episode psychosis and 52 healthy control subjects (baseline). Response was assessed after 12 weeks and patients were classified as responders or non-responders according to treatment outcome. At this second time-point, they also underwent a second diffusion tensor imaging scan. Tract-based spatial statistics were used to assess fractional anisotropy as a marker of white matter integrity. At baseline, non-responders showed lower fractional anisotropy than both responders and healthy control subjects (P < 0.05; family-wise error-corrected), mainly in the uncinate, cingulum and corpus callosum, whereas responders were indistinguishable from healthy control subjects. After 12 weeks, there was an increase in fractional anisotropy in both responders and non-responders, positively correlated with antipsychotic exposure. This represents one of the largest, controlled investigations of white matter integrity and response to antipsychotic treatment early in psychosis. These data, together with earlier findings on cortical grey matter, suggest that grey and white matter integrity at the start of treatment is an important moderator of response to antipsychotics. These findings can inform patient stratification to anticipate care needs, and raise the possibility that antipsychotics may restore white matter integrity as part of the therapeutic response
Discovery of a missing disease spreader
This study presents a method to discover an outbreak of an infectious disease
in a region for which data are missing, but which is at work as a disease
spreader. Node discovery for the spread of an infectious disease is defined as
discriminating between the nodes which are neighboring to a missing disease
spreader node, and the rest, given a dataset on the number of cases. The spread
is described by stochastic differential equations. A perturbation theory
quantifies the impact of the missing spreader on the moments of the number of
cases. Statistical discriminators examine the mid-body or tail-ends of the
probability density function, and search for the disturbance from the missing
spreader. They are tested with computationally synthesized datasets, and
applied to the SARS outbreak and flu pandemic.Comment: in pres
Ambidentate coordination in hydrogen bonded dimethyl sulfoxide, (CH3)2SOH3O+, and in dichlorobis(dimethyl sulfoxide) palladium(II) and platinum(II) solid solvates, by vibrational and sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy
The strongly hydrogen bonded species (CH3)(2)SO center dot center dot center dot H3O+ formed in concentrated hydrochloric acid displays a new low energy feature in its sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectrum. Density Functional Theory-Transition Potential (DFT-TP) calculations reveal that the strong hydrogen bonding decreases the energy of the transition S(1s) -> LUMO, which has antibonding sigma*(S-O) character, with about 0.8 eV. Normal coordinate force. field analyses of the vibrational spectra show that the SO stretching force constant decreases from 4.72 N cm(-1) in neat liquid dimethyl sulfoxide to 3.73 N cm(-1) for the hydrogen bonded (CH3)(2)SO center dot center dot center dot H3O+ species. The effects of sulfur coordination on the ambidentate dimethyl sulfoxide molecule were investigated for the trans-Pd((CH3)(2)SO)(2)Cl-2, trans-Pd((CD3)(2)SO)(2)Cl-2 and cis-Pt((CH3)(2)SO)(2)Cl-2 complexes with square planar coordination of the chlorine and sulfur atoms. The XANES spectra again showed shifts toward low energy for the transition S(1 s) -> LUMO, now with antibonding sigma*(M-Cl, M-S) character, with a larger shift for M = Pt than Pd. DFT-TP calculations indicated that the differences between the XANES spectra of the geometrical cis and trans isomers of the M((CH3)(2)SO)(2)Cl-2 complexes are expected to be too small to allow experimental distinction. The vibrational spectra of the palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes were recorded and complete assignments of the fundamentals were achieved. Even though the M-S bond distances are quite similar the high covalency especially of the Pt-S bonds induces significant increases in the S-O stretching force constants, 6.79 and 7.18 N cm(-1), respectively
Oxytocin and Epstein-Barr Virus: Stress biomarkers in the postpartum period among first-time mothers from São Paulo, Brazil
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between self-reported stress levels among new mothers in São Paulo, Brazil and two biomarkers of stressful experience, oxytocin (OT) and Epstein-Barr Virus antibody level (EBV-ab), with planned pregnancy hypothesized as a moderator of biological response to stressful conditions. Methods: Sixty-three first-time mothers between the ages of 15 and 45 were recruited from neighborhoods in São Paulo, Brazil. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected longitudinally, bi-weekly between two and 12 weeks postpartum. OT level was assessed from breast milk samples and EBV-ab from blood spot samples. An Interpersonal Satisfaction scale was developed, validated, and administered, along with the Cohen perceived stress scale (PSS). Results: In-depth interview data revealed unplanned pregnancy to be a significant stressor in the lives of first-time mothers. In linear regression, OT level was negatively associated with interpersonal satisfaction score (P = 0.022) and positively associated with PSS score (P = 0.007). When splitting the sample by planned status of the pregnancy, women with an unplanned pregnancy showed a strengthened positive association between OT level and PSS (P = 0.001; Adj R2 = 0.44) and negative association with interpersonal satisfaction (P = 0.017; Adj R2 = 0.15), while no associations existed for women with a planned pregnancy. EBV-ab level was not correlated or associated with stress/satisfaction measures. Conclusion: OT is an effective biomarker in the measurement of stress in the body, and additionally reflects differential experiences with difficult interpersonal circumstances, such as unplanned pregnancy. By contrast, EBV-ab failed to reflect differences in self-reported stress levels between mother
Prevalence and Predictors of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Children: A Great Britain Population Based Study
Objectives
To evaluate the prevalence and predictors of vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) in children In Great Britain.
Design
A nationally representative cross-sectional study survey of children (1102) aged 4–18 years (999 white, 570 male) living in private households (January 1997–1998). Interventions provided information about dietary habits, physical activity, socio-demographics, and blood sample. Outcome measures were vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L).
Results
Vitamin D levels (mean = 62.1 nmol/L, 95%CI 60.4–63.7) were insufficient in 35%, and decreased with age in both sexes (p<0.001). Young People living between 53–59 degrees latitude had lower levels (compared with 50–53 degrees, p = 0.045). Dietary intake and gender had no effect on vitamin D status. A logistic regression model showed increased risk of VDI in the following: adolescents (14–18 years old), odds ratio (OR) = 3.6 (95%CI 1.8–7.2) compared with younger children (4–8 years); non white children (OR = 37 [95%CI 15–90]); blood levels taken December-May (OR = 6.5 [95%CI 4.3–10.1]); on income support (OR = 2.2 [95%CI 1.3–3.9]); not taking vitamin D supplementation (OR = 3.7 [95%CI 1.4–9.8]); being overweight (OR 1.6 [95%CI 1.0–2.5]); <1/2 hour outdoor exercise/day/week (OR = 1.5 [95%CI 1.0–2.3]); watched >2.5 hours of TV/day/week (OR = 1.6[95%CI 1.0–2.4]).
Conclusion
We confirm a previously under-recognised risk of VDI in adolescents. The marked higher risk for VDI in non-white children suggests they should be targeted in any preventative strategies. The association of higher risk of VDI among children who exercised less outdoors, watched more TV and were overweight highlights potentially modifiable risk factors. Clearer guidelines and an increased awareness especially in adolescents are needed, as there are no recommendations for vitamin D supplementation in older children
Cuidador familiar de paciente com afecção neurológica
This is a qualitative exploratory research that aimed to identify and learn the meaning of being a family care provider of a neurologically affected patient. Twenty-one family care providers of both sexes were interviewed at the clinical hospital of University Vale do Sapucaí and at their homes. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews, which were recorded and transcribed. The methodological guidelines of the Collective Subject Discourse were used to select the central ideas and corresponding key expressions, from which the care providers' discourses were extracted. The following representations were identified about the event of being a care provider: "to provide care", "affection and responsibility", "act of love", "mission and vocation", "obligation" and "difficulty". In this study, the positive and negative senses inherent in the task of family care provider were confirmed.Pesquisa qualitativa, exploratória que teve como objetivo identificar e conhecer o significado de ser cuidador familiar de paciente com afecção neurológica.
