The Galaxy Populations of X-Ray Detected, Poor Groups
(Abridged) We determine the quantitative morphology and star formation
properties of galaxies in six nearby X-ray detected, poor groups using
multi-object spectroscopy and wide-field R imaging. We measure structural
parameters for each galaxy by fitting a PSF-convolved, two component model to
their surface brightness profiles. To compare directly the samples, we fade,
smooth, and rebin each galaxy image so that we effectively observe each galaxy
at the same redshift (9000 km/s) and physical resolution (0.87h^(-1) kpc). We
compare results for the groups to a sample of field galaxies. We find that: 1)
Galaxies spanning a wide range in morphological type and luminosity are
well-fit by a de Vaucouleurs bulge with exponential disk profile. 2)
Morphologically classifying these nearby group galaxies by their bulge fraction
(B/T) is fairly robust on average, even when their redshift has increased by up
to a factor of four and the effective resolution of the images is degraded by
up to a factor of five. 3) The fraction of bulge-dominated systems in these
groups is higher than in the field (~50% vs. ~20%). 4) The fraction of
bulge-dominated systems in groups decreases with increasing radius, similar to
the morphology-radius (~density) relation observed in galaxy clusters. 5)
Current star formation in group galaxies is correlated with significant
morphological asymmetry for disk-dominated systems (B/T<0.4). 6) The group
galaxies that are most disk-dominated (B/T<0.2) are less star forming and

Two Galaxy Clusters: A3565 and A3560
We report 102 new redshifts and magnitudes for a sample of galaxies to RF ~
15.5 mag in a 2.17 deg x 2.17 deg region centered on the galaxy IC 4296, the
most luminous member of the A3565 cluster. Up to the limiting magnitude we find
29 cluster members, and measure a velocity dispersion of 228 km/s. The
estimated total mass for this system is ~ 3.0 x h**-1 10**13 Msun (where h =
H0/100 km/s/Mpc), and its dynamical properties are quite typical of poor
clusters presenting X-ray emission. We also find that galaxies with absorption
lines are more concentrated towards the center of the cluster, while systems
with emission lines are mainly located in the outer parts. The small velocity
dispersion of the cluster, coupled to the known presence of an interacting pair
of galaxies, and the large extent of the brightest cluster galaxy, could
indicate that galaxy formation through mergers may still be underway in this
system. The surveyed region also contains galaxies belonging to the Shapley
Concentration cluster A3560. Within 30 arc min of the cluster center, we detect
32 galaxies, for which we measure a velocity dispersion of 588 km/s and a mass
of ~2 x h**-1 10**14 Msun. However, because our sample is restricted to
galaxies brighter than M*, these values should be considered only as rough

High-order 3D Voronoi tessellation for identifying Isolated galaxies, Pairs and Triplets
Geometric method based on the high-order 3D Voronoi tessellation is proposed
for identifying the single galaxies, pairs and triplets. This approach allows
to select small galaxy groups and isolated galaxies in different environment
and find the isolated systems. The volume-limited sample of galaxies from the
SDSS DR5 spectroscopic survey was used. We conclude that in such small groups
as pairs and triplets the segregation by luminosity is clearly observed:
galaxies in the isolated pairs and triplets are on average two times more
luminous than isolated galaxies. We consider the dark matter content in
different systems. The median values of mass-to-luminosity ratio are 12
M_sol/L_sol for the isolated pairs and 44 M_sol/L_sol for the isolated
triplets; 7 (8) M_sol/L_sol for the most compact pairs (triplets). We found
also that systems in the denser environment have greater rms velocity and

The intermediate-redshift galaxy cluster CL 0048-2942. Stellar populations
We present a detailed study of the cluster CL 0048-2942, located at z~0.64,
based on a photometric and spectroscopic catalogue of 54 galaxies in a 5 x 5
square arcmin region centred in that cluster. Of these, 23 galaxies were found
to belong to the cluster. Based on this sample, the line-of-sight velocity
dispersion of the cluster is approximately 680 +- 140 km/s. We have performed
stellar population synthesis in the cluster members as well as in the field
galaxies of the sample and found that there are population gradients in the
cluster with central galaxies hosting mainly intermediate/old populations
whereas galaxies in the cluster outskirts show clearly an increase of younger
populations, meaning that star formation is predominantly taking place in the
outer regions of the cluster. In a general way, field galaxies seem to host
less evolved stellar populations than cluster members. In fact, in terms of
ages, young supergiant stars dominate the spectra of field galaxies whereas
cluster galaxies display a dominant number of old and intermediate age stars.
Following the work of other authors (e.g. Dressler et al. 1999) we have
estimated the percentage of K+A galaxies in our sample and found around 13% in
the cluster and 10% in the field. These values were estimated through means of
a new method, based on stellar population synthesis results, that takes into
account all possible absorption features in the spectrum and thus makes optimal

Cervical cancer cell lines expressing NKG2D-ligands are able to down-modulate the NKG2D receptor on NKL cells with functional implications
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cervical cancer represents the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women worldwide. Natural killer (NK) cells play an important role in the defense against viruses, intracellular bacteria and tumors. NKG2D, an activating receptor on NK cells, recognizes MHC class I chain-related molecules, such as MICA/B and members of the ULBP/RAET1 family. Tumor-derived soluble NKG2D-ligands have been shown to down-modulate the expression of NKG2D on NK cells. In addition to the down-modulation induced by soluble NKG2D-ligands, it has recently been described that persistent cell-cell contact can also down-modulate NKG2D expression. The goal of this study was to determine whether the NKG2D receptor is down-modulated by cell-cell contact with cervical cancer cells and whether this down-modulation might be associated with changes in NK cell activity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We demonstrate that NKG2D expressed on NKL cells is down-modulated by direct cell contact with cervical cancer cell lines HeLa, SiHa, and C33A, but not with non-tumorigenic keratinocytes (HaCaT). Moreover, this down-modulation had functional implications. We found expression of NKG2D-ligands in all cervical cancer cell lines, but the patterns of ligand distribution were different in each cell line. Cervical cancer cell lines co-cultured with NKL cells or fresh NK cells induced a marked diminution of NKG2D expression on NKL cells. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity of NKL cells against K562 targets was compromised after co-culture with HeLa and SiHa cells, while co-culture with C33A increased the cytotoxic activity of the NKL cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results suggest that differential expression of NKG2D-ligands in cervical cancer cell lines might be associated with the down-modulation of NKG2D, as well as with changes in the cytotoxic activity of NKL cells after cell-cell contact with the tumor cells.</p
Detailed Study of the Ursa Major Supercluster of Galaxies Using the 2MASS and SDSS Catalogs
We study the infrared (K_s band) properties of clusters of galaxies in the
Ursa Major supercluster using data from 2MASS (Two-Micron All-Sky Survey) and
SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey). We identified three large filaments with mean
redshifts of z = 0.051, 0.060, and 0.071. All clusters of the supercluster are
located in these filaments. We determined the total K_s-band luminosities and
masses for 11 clusters of galaxies within comparable physical regions (within a
radius R_200 close to the virial radius) using a homogeneous method. We
constructed a combined luminosity function for the supercluster in this region,
which can be described by the Schechter function with the following parameters:
M*_K = -24^m.50 and \alpha = -0.98. The infrared luminosities of the clusters
of galaxies correlate with their masses; the M/L_K ratios of the systems
increase with their masses (luminosities), with most of the Ursa Major clusters
of galaxies (particularly the richer ones) closely following the relations
derived previously for a large sample of clusters and groups of galaxies. The
total mass-to-infrared-luminosity ratio is 52 M_{\odot}/L_{\odot} for six Abell
clusters and 49 M_{\odot}/L_{\odot} for all of the clusters, except Anon2.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Latin America: the next region for haematopoietic transplant progress
Haematopoietic cell transplant activity in the 28 countries comprising Latin America is poorly defined. We conducted a voluntary survey of members of the Latin American Bone Marrow Transplantation Group regarding transplant activity 2009–2012. Collated responses were compared with data of transplant rates from the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation for other geographic regions. Several socio-economic variables were analysed to determine correlations with transplant rates. In total, 94 teams from 12 countries reported 11519 transplants including 7033 autotransplants and 4486 allotransplants. Annual activity increased from 2517 transplants in 2009 to 3263 in 2012, a 30% increase. Median transplants rate (transplant per million inhabitants) in 2012 was 64 (autotransplants, median 40; allotransplants, median 24). This rate is substantially lower than that in North America and European regions (482 and 378) but higher than that in the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Pacific regions (30 and 45). However, the Latin America transplant rate is 5–8-fold lower than that in America and Europe, suggesting a need to increase transplant availability. Transplant team density in Latin America (teams per million population; 1.8) is 3–4-fold lower than that in North America (6.2) or Europe (7.6). Within Latin America, there is substantial diversity in transplant rates by country partially explained by diverse socio-economic variables including per capita gross national income, health expenditure and physician density. These data should help inform future health-care policy in Latin America
