    Ocurrencia de lepas pedunculadas (Conchoderma virgatum) (Cirripedia: thoracica) en pingüinos de Magallanes (Spheniscus magellanicus)

    Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) breed in Argentina, Chile and the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands, and seasonally migrate towards the coasts of Uruguay, Brazil and Peru. We report the finding of pedunculate barnacles Conchoderma virgatum (Cirripedia: Thoracica) on the body surface of seven out of 62 Magellanic Penguins. These birds were beach-cast along the coast of São Paulo state (23º57’S; 46º23’W), Brazil, on winter 2008 andwinter 2010. Barnacles were attached on the surface of the flippers, feet and lower chest, and in some cases the barnacle had over 40 grouped individuals, some measuring up to 4 cm. Affected penguins had low body mass (range = 1.6 – 2.05 kg) and were in generally poor health (cachexia, anemia and dehydration). The barnacles were considered to have occurred secondarily to the poor health status of the examined penguins. En este trabajo se reporta el hallazgo de percebes pedunculados Conchoderma virgatum (Cirripedia: Thoracica) sobre la superficie del cuerpo de siete pingüinos de Magallanes. Las aves fueron encontradas en las playas a lo largo de la costa del Estado de São Paulo(23º57’S, 46º23’O), Brasil, en los inviernos de 2008 y 2010. Los crustáceos estaban en lasuperficie de las aletas, pies y abdomen, y en algunos casos, los percebes tenían más de 40 individuos agrupados, algunos midiendo hasta 4 cm. Los pingüinos afectados tenían masa corporal baja (rango = 1.6 – 2.05 kg) y se encontraban en un mal estado de salud (caquexia, anemia y deshidratación). Se considera que los percebes observados ocurrieron posteriormente y de modo secundario al mal estado de salud de los pingüinos examinados.     Strategies for talent engagement and retention of Brazilian Nursing professionals

    OBJECTIVE: To reflect on how human resource health managers and talent managers may engage and retain experienced nursing professionals in Brazil. METHODS: Reflection based on studies on global and Brazilian-specific nursing professionals and retention, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: The pandemic worsened working conditions for all health professionals. Nursing professionals were particularly affected. Nurses have been viewed as "heroes" and "essential" frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite the universal praise for their efforts, it seems uncertain if they were actually considered and managed like talent. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: In order to develop a sustainable healthcare system supported by sufficient experienced nursing talent, healthcare human resource managers and talent managers must develop and implement impactful nursing talent retention and engagement strategies.     Actinobacteria from arctic and atlantic deep-sea sediments—biodiversity and bioactive potential

    The deep-sea covers over 70% of the Earth’s surface and harbors predominantly uncharacterized bacterial communities. Actinobacteria are the major prokaryotic source of bioactive natural products that find their way into drug discovery programs, and the deep-sea is a promising source of biotechnologically relevant actinobacteria. Previous studies on actinobacteria in deep-sea sediments were either regionally restricted or did not combine a community characterization with the analysis of their bioactive potential. Here we characterized the actinobacterial communities of upper layers of deep-sea sediments from the Arctic and the Atlantic (Azores and Madeira) ocean basins, employing 16S rRNA metabarcoding, and studied the biosynthetic potential of cultivable actinobacteria retrieved from those samples. Metabarcoding analysis showed that the actinobacterial composition varied between the sampled regions, with higher abundance in the Arctic samples but higher diversity in the Atlantic ones. Twenty actinobacterial genera were detected using metabarcoding, as a culture-independent method, while culture-dependent methods only allowed the identification of nine genera. Isolation of actinobacteria resulted on the retrieval of 44 isolates, mainly associated with Brachybacterium, Microbacterium, and Brevibacterium genera. Some of these isolates were only identified on a specific sampled region. Chemical extracts of the actinobacterial isolates were subsequently screened for their antimicrobial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Extracts from two Streptomyces strains demonstrated activity against Candida albicans. Additionally, eight extracts (obtained from Brachybacterium, Brevibacterium, Microbacterium, Rhodococcus, and Streptomyces isolates) showed significant activity against at least one of the tested cancer cell lines (HepG2 and T-47D). Furthermore, 15 actinobacterial extracts showed anti-inflammatory potential in the RAW 264.4 cell model assay, with no concomitant cytotoxic response. Dereplication and molecular networking analysis of the bioactive actinobacterial extracts showed the presence of some metabolites associated with known natural products, but one of the analyzed clusters did not show any match with the natural products described as responsible for these bioactivities. Overall, we were able to recover taxonomically diverse actinobacteria with different bioactivities from the studied deep-sea samples. The conjugation of culture-dependent and -independent methods allows a better understanding of the actinobacterial diversity of deep-sea environments, which is important for the optimization of approaches to obtain novel chemically-rich isolates.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Robust Radiomics Feature Quantification Using Semiautomatic Volumetric Segmentation

    Due to advances in the acquisition and analysis of medical imaging, it is currently possible to quantify the tumor phenotype. The emerging field of Radiomics addresses this issue by converting medical images into minable data by extracting a large number of quantitative imaging features. One of the main challenges of Radiomics is tumor segmentation. Where manual delineation is time consuming and prone to inter-observer variability, it has been shown that semi-automated approaches are fast and reduce inter-observer variability. In this study, a semiautomatic region growing volumetric segmentation algorithm, implemented in the free and publicly available 3D-Slicer platform, was investigated in terms of its robustness for quantitative imaging feature extraction. Fifty-six 3D-radiomic features, quantifying phenotypic differences based on tumor intensity, shape and texture, were extracted from the computed tomography images of twenty lung cancer patients. These radiomic features were derived from the 3D-tumor volumes defined by three independent observers twice using 3D-Slicer, and compared to manual slice-by-slice delineations of five independent physicians in terms of intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and feature range. Radiomic features extracted from 3D-Slicer segmentations had significantly higher reproducibility (ICC = 0.85±0.15, p = 0.0009) compared to the features extracted from the manual segmentations (ICC = 0.77±0.17). Furthermore, we found that features extracted from 3D-Slicer segmentations were more robust, as the range was significantly smaller across observers (p = 3.819e-07), and overlapping with the feature ranges extracted from manual contouring (boundary lower: p = 0.007, higher: p = 5.863e-06). Our results show that 3D-Slicer segmented tumor volumes provide a better alternative to the manual delineation for feature quantification, as they yield more reproducible imaging descriptors. Therefore, 3D-Slicer can be employed for quantitative image feature extraction and image data mining research in large patient cohorts
