Humor as a character strength among the elderly: Theoretical considerations
Positive psychology is a scientific approach within psychology that focuses on research on what is best in people. Within this framework, humor is understood as a character strength. The article gives a brief overview on positive psychology and implications for aging (positive aging, successful aging) with an emphasis on the contribution of humor. Humor as a strength of character and its measurement by various approaches are discussed. It is argued that there is a lack of empirical data about humor in the elderly. Potential benefits of considering humor in research but also in practice are discusse
Chemical constituents of the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii and determination of the absolute configuration of suberectin
Phytochemical investigation on the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii (Leguminosae) led to the isolation of nine secondary metabolites (1-9). Compound 1 was isolated from the genus Erythrina for the first time. The pure compounds were identified on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses, while their absolute configurations were determined based on chiroptical measurements. Compounds 5 and 6 showed weak antifungal activity against Pyricularia oryzae with MIC values of 20 ”g/mL.

The 3-Band Hubbard-Model versus the 1-Band Model for the high-Tc Cuprates: Pairing Dynamics, Superconductivity and the Ground-State Phase Diagram
One central challenge in high- superconductivity (SC) is to derive a
detailed understanding for the specific role of the - and
- orbital degrees of freedom. In most theoretical studies an
effective one-band Hubbard (1BH) or t-J model has been used. Here, the physics
is that of doping into a Mott-insulator, whereas the actual high- cuprates
are doped charge-transfer insulators. To shed light on the related question,
where the material-dependent physics enters, we compare the competing magnetic
and superconducting phases in the ground state, the single- and two-particle
excitations and, in particular, the pairing interaction and its dynamics in the
three-band Hubbard (3BH) and 1BH-models. Using a cluster embedding scheme, i.e.
the variational cluster approach (VCA), we find which frequencies are relevant
for pairing in the two models as a function of interaction strength and doping:
in the 3BH-models the interaction in the low- to optimal-doping regime is
dominated by retarded pairing due to low-energy spin fluctuations with
surprisingly little influence of inter-band (p-d charge) fluctuations. On the
other hand, in the 1BH-model, in addition a part comes from "high-energy"
excited states (Hubbard band), which may be identified with a non-retarded
contribution. We find these differences between a charge-transfer and a Mott
insulator to be renormalized away for the ground-state phase diagram of the
3BH- and 1BH-models, which are in close overall agreement, i.e. are
"universal". On the other hand, we expect the differences - and thus, the
material dependence to show up in the "non-universal" finite-T phase diagram

Measurement of the Cross Section of W-boson pair production at LEP
The cross section of W-boson pair-production is measured with the L3 detector
at LEP. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 629.4/pb,
collected at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, 9834
four-fermion events with W bosons decaying into hadrons or leptons are
selected. The total cross section is measured with a precision of 1.4 % and
agrees with the Standard Model expectation. Assuming charged-lepton
universality, the branching fraction for hadronic W-boson decays is measured to
be: Br(W-->hadrons) = 67.50 +- 0.42 (stat.) +- 0.30(syst.) %, in agreement with
the Standard Model. Differential cross sections as a function of the W-
production angle are also measured for the semi-leptonic channels qqev and
qqmv
Measurement of W Polarisation at LEP
The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e+
e- -> W+ W- -> l nu q q~ at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W
decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 183-209 GeV are used to
measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson
production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured
to be 0.218 \pm 0.027 \pm 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and
the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation
Search for Anomalous Couplings in the Higgs Sector at LEP
Anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson are searched for through the processes
e^+ e^- -> H gamma, e^+ e^- -> e^+ e^- H and e^+ e^- -> HZ. The mass range 70
GeV < m_H < 190 GeV is explored using 602 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
sqrt(s)=189-209 GeV. The Higgs decay channels H -> ffbar, H -> gamma gamma, H
-> Z\gamma and H -> WW^(*) are considered and no evidence is found for
anomalous Higgs production or decay. Limits on the anomalous couplings d, db,
Delta(g1z), Delta(kappa_gamma) and xi^2 are derived as well as limits on the H
-> gamma gamma and H -> Z gamma decay rates

Bose-Einstein Correlations of Neutral and Charged Pions in Hadronic Z Decays
Bose-Einstein correlations of both neutral and like-sign charged pion pairs
are measured in a sample of 2 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3
detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in the four-momentum difference
range 300 MeV < Q < 2 GeV. The radius of the neutral pion source is found to be
smaller than that of charged pions. This result is in qualitative agreement
with the string fragmentation model
Z Boson Pair-Production at LEP
Events stemming from the pair-production of Z bosons in e^+e^- collisions are
studied using 217.4 pb^-1 of data collected with the L3 detector at
centre-of-mass energies from 200 GeV up to 209 GeV. The special case of events
with b quarks is also investigated.
Combining these events with those collected at lower centre-of-mass energies,
the Standard Model predictions for the production mechanism are verified. In
addition, limits are set on anomalous couplings of neutral gauge bosons and on
effects of extra space dimensions
Neutral-Current Four-Fermion Production in e+e- Interactions at LEP
Neutral-current four-fermion production, e+e- -> ffff is studied in 0.7/fb of
data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
root(s)=183-209GeV. Four final states are considered: qqvv, qqll, llll and
llvv, where l denotes either an electron or a muon. Their cross sections are
measured and found to agree with the Standard Model predictions. In addition,
the e+e- -> Zgamma* -> ffff process is studied and its total cross section at
the average centre-of-mass energy 196.6GeV is found to be 0.29 +/- 0.05 +/-
0.03 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic,
in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.22 pb. Finally, the mass
spectra of the qqll final states are analysed to search for the possible
production of a new neutral heavy particle, for which no evidence is found
