Conformational studies of bipyrimidine-based mesogens by combination of DFT calculations and temperature-dependent infrared studies
International audienceCombination of DFT calculations and solid-state temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopy has confirmed that the central core of recently developed bipyrimidine-based mesogens is not flat, i.e. do not adopt a disc shape, inside the columnar liquid-crystalline phase. For this purpose, the intensities and the frequency shifts of the most sensitive CâN and CâC bands of the central bipyrimidine core have been studied as a function of the temperature and of the dihedral angle. The results support the reported packing model in which the molecules are interdigitated alternatively along their long axis and their short axis to form columns inside the mesophase
Total knee replacements using rotating hinge implants in polio patients: clinical and functional outcomes
Little evidences are available in the literature concerning the outcomes of total knee replacement (TKR) in poliomyelitis patients with severe knee deformities or degeneration. Encouraging results have been reported concerning the use of constrained implants, i.e., rotating hinge knee prosthesis (RHK), compared to less constrained ones. The purpose of this paper is to report our experience with rotating hinge total knee replacement, using only RHK prosthesis, to determine functional results, complications, and survival of TKR in poliomyelitis patients. We performed a retrospective chart review of 14 patients with a history of knee osteoarthritis following poliomyelitis that underwent primary TKR, for a total of 15 surgical procedure (one bilateral case). Preoperative and postoperative clinical measurements have been conducted for all patients using the Knee Society Score (KSS). Hip-knee angle, recurvatum knee angle, and Insall-Salvati index were evaluated with full weight-bearing panoramic view X-ray preoperatively and postoperatively. The 2-year postoperative clinical KSS significantly improved from the preoperative scores. The average clinical KSS improved from 32,9 (range 3-48) preoperatively to 77,4 (range 60-88) postoperatively (P valueâ<â0.005). The average functional KSS improved from 32,5 (range 10-60) preoperatively to 59,4 (range 30-95) postoperatively (P valueâ<â0.005). TKR is a successful treatment in improving knee function and patient's quality of life. Using constrained implants, especially rotating hinge implants in polio patients with a quadriceps muscle weakness, could be a good alternative to maintain a physiological kinematics and reducing the revision rate due to knee instability
Inventing the Neolithic? Putting evidence-based interpretation back into the study of faunal remains from causewayed enclosures.
ArticleThis is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in World Archaeology on 2015, available online: http://wwww.tandfonline.com/10.1080/00438243.2015.1072476The paper argues that our current understanding of the animal bones from causewayed enclosure sites in Britain is flawed. During the 1980-90s, a number of key interpretations, still frequently espoused, were based more upon anecdote and theory-driven assertion than on empirical evidence. An example is that evidence of bone processing (butchery and bone fracture) does not feature heavily in the faunal record from causewayed enclosures. Using data from the sites of Etton and Staines, this view must now be questioned. Both butchery and peri-mortem bone fracture are present in these assemblages in substantial quantities. These sites are compared with Ludwinowo 7, a Linearbandkeramik settlement site in Poland and there are considerable similarities between the three different sites. This suggests possibility that the broader economic utility of animal bone assemblages at causewayed enclosures has been underestimated, having been, up to now, regarded as ânot indicative of domestic settlementâ

Revisiting and modelling the woodland farming system of the early Neolithic Linear Pottery Culture (LBK), 5600â4900 B.C
International audienceThis article presents the conception and the conceptual results of a modelling representation of the farming systems of the Linearbandkeramik Culture (LBK). Assuming that there were permanent fields (PF) then, we suggest four ways that support the sustainability of such a farming system over time: a generalized pollarding and coppicing of trees to increase the productivity of woodland areas for foddering more livestock, which itself can then provide more manure for the fields, a generalized use of pulses grown together with cereals during the same cropping season, thereby reducing the needs for manure. Along with assumptions limiting bias on village and family organizations, the conceptual model which we propose for human environment in the LBK aims to be sustainable for long periods and can thereby overcome doubts about the PFs hypothesis for the LBK farming system. Thanks to a reconstruction of the climate of western Europe and the consequent vegetation pattern and productivity arising from it, we propose a protocol of experiments and validation procedures for both testing the PFs hypothesis and defining its eco-geographical area
Searching for the origins of bere barley: a geometric morphometric approach to cereal landrace recognition in archaeology
Bere is a landrace of barley, adapted to the marginal conditions of northern Scotland, especially those of the Northern and Western Isles. The history of bere on these islands is long and, in an era of diminishing landrace cultivation, bere now represents one of the oldest cereal landraces in Europe still grown commercially. The longevity of bere raises the possibility of using grain characteristics of present-day specimens to identify bere in the archaeological record. Geometric modern morphometric (GMM) analysis of grains from bere and other barley landraces is conducted to determine whether landraces can be differentiated on grain morphology. Results indicate that there are morphological differences between bere and other British and Scandinavian landraces, and between bere from Orkney and the Western Isles, both of which are apparent in genetic analysis. This finding paves the way for the identification of bere archaeologically, helping to establish its status as living heritage and securing its commercial future. More broadly, this work indicates the potential of grain GMM for the recognition of cereal landraces, permitting the ancestry and exchange of landraces to be traced in the archaeological record
A seguir, alguns tĂłpicos importantes mereceram tratamento Ă parte: a fome, o alimento e o domĂnio religioso, as descobertas europĂ©ias e a difusĂŁo mundial de alimentos, gosto e gastronomia. O artigo se encerra com um rĂĄpido balanço crĂtico da historiografia brasileira sobre o tema
