AbstractTraumatic arteriovenous fistulas of the head and neck region are uncommon. Alternative symplectic structures for SO(3,1) and SO(4) four-dimensional BF theories
The most general action, quadratic in the B fields as well as in the
curvature F, having SO(3,1) or SO(4) as the internal gauge group for a
four-dimensional BF theory is presented and its symplectic geometry is
displayed. It is shown that the space of solutions to the equations of motion
for the BF theory can be endowed with symplectic structures alternative to the
usual one. The analysis also includes topological terms and cosmological
constant. The implications of this fact for gravity are briefly discussed.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX file, no figure
Dibucaine in Ionic-Gradient Liposomes: Biophysical, Toxicological, and Activity Characterization
Administration of local anesthetics is one of the most effective pain control techniques for postoperative analgesia. However, anesthetic agents easily diffuse into the injection site, limiting the time of anesthesia. One approach to prolong analgesia is to entrap local anesthetic agents in nanostructured carriers (e.g., liposomes). Here, we report that using an ammonium sulphate gradient was the best strategy to improve the encapsulation (62.6%) of dibucaine (DBC) into liposomes. Light scattering and nanotracking analyses were used to characterize vesicle properties, such as, size, polydispersity, zeta potentials, and number. In vitro kinetic experiments revealed the sustained release of DBC (50% in 7 h) from the liposomes. In addition, in vitro (3T3 cells in culture) and in vivo (zebrafish) toxicity assays revealed that ionic-gradient liposomes were able to reduce DBC cyto/cardiotoxicity and morphological changes in zebrafish larvae. Moreover, the anesthesia time attained after infiltrative administration in mice was longer with encapsulated DBC (27 h) than that with free DBC (11 h), at 320 μM (0.012%), confirming it as a promising long-acting liposome formulation for parenteral drug administration of dibucaine.Fil: Couto, Verônica M.. A Dipole Vortex Model of Obscuring Tori in Active Galaxy Nuclei
The torus concept as an essential structural component of active galactic
nuclei (AGN) is generally accepted. Here, the situation is discussed when the
torus "twisting" by the radiation or wind transforms it into a dipole toroidal
vortex which in turn can be a source of matter replenishing the accretion disk.
Thus emerging instability which can be responsible for quasar radiation flares
accompanied by matter outbursts is also discussed. The "Matreshka" scheme for
an obscuring vortex torus structure capable of explaining the AGN variability
and evolution is proposed. The model parameters estimated numerically for the
luminosity close to the Eddington limit agree well with the observations.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, version of this paper is published in Astronomy

Complete results for five years of GNO solar neutrino observations
We report the complete GNO solar neutrino results for the measuring periods
GNO III, GNO II, and GNO I. The result for GNO III (last 15 solar runs) is
[54.3 + 9.9 - 9.3 (stat.)+- 2.3 (syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) or [54.3 + 10.2 - 9.6
(incl. syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) with errors combined. The GNO experiment is now
terminated after altogether 58 solar exposure runs that were performed between
May 20, 1998 and April 9, 2003. The combined result for GNO (I+II+III) is [62.9
+ 5.5 - 5.3 (stat.) +- 2.5 (syst.)] SNU (1 sigma) or [62.9 + 6.0 - 5.9] SNU (1
sigma) with errors combined in quadrature. Overall, gallium based solar
observations at LNGS (first in GALLEX, later in GNO) lasted from May 14, 1991
through April 9, 2003. The joint result from 123 runs in GNO and GALLEX is
[69.3 +- 5.5 (incl. syst.)] SNU (1 sigma). The distribution of the individual
run results is consistent with the hypothesis of a neutrino flux that is
constant in time. Implications from the data in particle- and astrophysics are
reiterated.Comment: 22 pages incl. 9 Figures and 8 Tables. to appear in: Physics Letters

Medical imaging: Foundations and scope
Ultrasonido (US), Resonancia Magnética (MRI), Tomografía
Computarizada sencilla (CT) y multicapa (MSCT), Tomografía
hipertensivos.Nowdays, several forms of medical imaging are usefulness in
clinical support for both diagnostics diseases generation and
treatment planning designed to provide an alternative solution
to people who, for one or another reason, manifest an
imbalance in your health. Among the imaging modalities that
frequently are used in the medical field may include: Ultrasound
(US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), simple computed
tomography (CT) and multilayer computed tomography
(MSCT), CT positron emission tomography (PET) Computed
tomography and single photon emission (SPECT). In this sense,
this article presents an orderly, coherent and systematic
description of these modalities and it establishes relationship
with the MSCT modality and clinical situations closely related
to cardiac anatomy and hypertension processes. The reason
emphasis on MSCT is done is because, on the one hand, we
have a large number of databases both physiological subjects
and pathological subjects and, on the other, we plan to
present a set of computational techniques that will be explored
in future research, in the context of cardiologic anatomical
aspects, with directly or indirectly influence in the emergence,
development and prevalence of hypertensive processes.http://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=5594990700
Astrophysical turbulence modeling
The role of turbulence in various astrophysical settings is reviewed. Among
the differences to laboratory and atmospheric turbulence we highlight the
ubiquitous presence of magnetic fields that are generally produced and
maintained by dynamo action. The extreme temperature and density contrasts and
stratifications are emphasized in connection with turbulence in the
interstellar medium and in stars with outer convection zones, respectively. In
many cases turbulence plays an essential role in facilitating enhanced
transport of mass, momentum, energy, and magnetic fields in terms of the
corresponding coarse-grained mean fields. Those transport properties are
usually strongly modified by anisotropies and often completely new effects
emerge in such a description that have no correspondence in terms of the
original (non coarse-grained) fields.Comment: 88 pages, 26 figures, published in Reports on Progress in Physic
Search for Gravitational Wave Bursts from Six Magnetars
Soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) are thought to be magnetars: neutron stars powered by extreme magnetic fields. These rare objects are characterized by repeated and sometimes spectacular gamma-ray bursts. The burst mechanism might involve crustal fractures and excitation of non-radial modes which would emit gravitational waves (GWs). We present the results of a search for GW bursts from six galactic magnetars that is sensitive to neutron star f-modes, thought to be the most efficient GW emitting oscillatory modes in compact stars. One of them, SGR 0501+4516, is likely similar to 1 kpc from Earth, an order of magnitude closer than magnetars targeted in previous GW searches. A second, AXP 1E 1547.0-5408, gave a burst with an estimated isotropic energy >10(44) erg which is comparable to the giant flares. We find no evidence of GWs associated with a sample of 1279 electromagnetic triggers from six magnetars occurring between 2006 November and 2009 June, in GW data from the LIGO, Virgo, and GEO600 detectors. Our lowest model-dependent GW emission energy upper limits for band-and time-limited white noise bursts in the detector sensitive band, and for f-mode ringdowns (at 1090 Hz), are 3.0 x 10(44)d(1)(2) erg and 1.4 x 10(47)d(1)(2) erg, respectively, where d(1) = d(0501)/1 kpc and d(0501) is the distance to SGR 0501+4516. These limits on GW emission from f-modes are an order of magnitude lower than any previous, and approach the range of electromagnetic energies seen in SGR giant flares for the first time.United States National Science FoundationScience and Technology Facilities Council of the United KingdomMax-Planck-SocietyState of Niedersachsen/GermanyItalian Istituto Nazionale di Fisica NucleareFrench Centre National de la Recherche ScientifiqueAustralian Research CouncilCouncil of Scientific and Industrial Research of IndiaIstituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare of ItalySpanish Ministerio de Educacion y CienciaConselleria d'Economia Hisenda i Innovacio of the Govern de les Illes BalearsFoundation for Fundamental Research on Matter supported by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific ResearchPolish Ministry of Science and Higher EducationFoundation for Polish ScienceRoyal SocietyScottish Funding CouncilScottish Universities Physics AllianceNational Aeronautics and Space Administration NNH07ZDA001-GLASTCarnegie TrustLeverhulme TrustDavid and Lucile Packard FoundationResearch CorporationAlfred P.
