Anomalous Raman scattering from phonons and electrons of superconducting FeSe
We report interesting anomalies in the temperature dependent Raman spectra of
FeSe measured from 3K to 300K in the spectral range from 60 to 1800
cm and determine their origin using complementary first-principles
density functional calculations. A phonon mode near 100 cm exhibits a
sharp increase by 5% in frequency below a temperature T ( 100
K) attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling and onset of short-range
antiferromagnetic order. In addition, two high frequency modes are observed at
1350 cm and 1600 cm, attributed to electronic Raman scattering
from ()to / -orbitals of Fe.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
Raman evidence for Orbiton-Mediated Multiphonon Scattering in Multiferroic TbMnO
Temperature-dependent Raman spectra of TbMnO from 5 K to 300 K in the
spectral range of 200 to 1525 cm show five first-order Raman allowed
modes and two high frequency modes. The intensity ratio of the high frequency
Raman band to the corresponding first order Raman mode is nearly constant and
high ( 0.6) at all temperatures, suggesting a orbiton-phonon mixed nature
of the high frequency mode. One of the first order phonon modes shows anomalous
softening below T ( 46 K), suggesting a strong spin-phonon coupling.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
Coupled Phonons, Magnetic Excitations and Ferroelectricity in AlFeO3: Raman and First-principles Studies
We determine the nature of coupled phonons and magnetic excitations in AlFeO3
using inelastic light scattering from 5 K to 315 K covering a spectral range
from 100-2200 cm-1 and complementary first-principles density functional
theory-based calculations. A strong spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering
induced phonon renormalization are evident in (a) anomalous temperature
dependence of many modes with frequencies below 850 cm-1, particularly near the
magnetic transition temperature Tc ~ 250 K, (b) distinct changes in band
positions of high frequency Raman bands between 1100-1800 cm-1, in particular a
broad mode near 1250 cm-1 appears only below Tc attributed to the two-magnon
Raman scattering. We also observe weak anomalies in the mode frequencies at ~
100 K, due to a magnetically driven ferroelectric phase transition.
Understanding of these experimental observations has been possible on the basis
of first-principles calculations of phonons spectrum and their coupling with
spins
Temperature-dependent Raman study of CeFeAsO0.9F0.1 Superconductor: Crystal field excitations, phonons and their coupling
We report temperature-dependent Raman spectra of CeFeAsO0.9F0.1 from 4 K to
300 K in spectral range of 60 to 1800 cm-1 and interpret them using estimates
of phonon frequencies obtained from first-principles density functional
calculations. We find evidence for a strong coupling between the phonons and
crystal field excitations; in particular Ce3+ crystal field excitation at 432
cm-1 couples strongly with Eg oxygen vibration at 389 cm-1 . Below the
superconducting transition temperature, the phonon mode near 280 cm-1 shows
softening, signaling its coupling with the superconducting gap. The ratio of
the superconducting gap to Tc thus estimated to be ~ 10 suggests CeFeAsO0.9F0.1
as a strong coupling superconductor. In addition, two high frequency modes
observed at 1342 cm-1 and 1600 cm-
Fabrication, Modeling and Characterization of Multi-Crosslinked Methacrylate Copolymeric Nanoparticles for Oral Drug Delivery
Nanotechnology remains the field to explore in the quest to enhance therapeutic efficacies of existing drugs. Fabrication of a methacrylate copolymer-lipid nanoparticulate (MCN) system was explored in this study for oral drug delivery of levodopa. The nanoparticles were fabricated employing multicrosslinking technology and characterized for particle size, zeta potential, morphology, structural modification, drug entrapment efficiency and in vitro drug release. Chemometric Computational (CC) modeling was conducted to deduce the mechanism of nanoparticle synthesis as well as to corroborate the experimental findings. The CC modeling deduced that the nanoparticles synthesis may have followed the mixed triangular formations or the mixed patterns. They were found to be hollow nanocapsules with a size ranging from 152 nm (methacrylate copolymer) to 321 nm (methacrylate copolymer blend) and a zeta potential range of 15.8–43.3 mV. The nanoparticles were directly compressible and it was found that the desired rate of drug release could be achieved by formulating the nanoparticles as a nanosuspension, and then directly compressing them into tablet matrices or incorporating the nanoparticles directly into polymer tablet matrices. However, sustained release of MCNs was achieved only when it was incorporated into a polymer matrix. The experimental results were well corroborated by the CC modeling. The developed technology may be potentially useful for the fabrication of multi-crosslinked polymer blend nanoparticles for oral drug delivery
Temperature-Dependent Infrared Reflectivity Studies of Multiferroic TbMnO_{3}: Evidence for Spin-Phonon Coupling
We have measured near normal incidence far infrared (FIR) reflectivity
spectra of a single crystal of TbMnO3 from 10K to 300K in the spectral range of
50 cm to 700 cm. Fifteen transverse optic (TO) and longitudinal
optic (LO) modes are identified in the imaginary part of the dielectric
function () and energy loss function
Im(-1/()), respectively. Some of the observed phonon modes
show anomalous softening below the magnetic transition temperature T (~
46K). We attribute this anomalous softening to the spin-phonon coupling caused
by phonon modulation of the super-exchange integral between the Mn
spins. The effective charge of oxygen (Z) calculated using the measured
LO-TO splitting increases below T.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Noninvasive Diagnosis of Visceral Leishmaniasis:Development and Evaluation of Two Urine-Based Immunoassays for Detection of Leishmania donovani Infection in India
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), one of the most prevalent parasitic diseasesin the developing world causes serious health concerns. Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a skin disease which occurs after treatment as a sequel to VL. Parasitological diagnosis involves invasive tissue aspiration which is tedious and painful. Commercially available immunochromatographic rapid diagnostic test such as rK39-RDT is used for field diagnosis of VL, detects antibodiesin serum samples. Urine sample is however, much easier in
collection, storage and handling than serum and would be a better alternative where collection of tissue aspirate or blood is impractical. In this study, we have developed and evaluated the performance of two urine-based diagnostic assays, ELISA and dipstick test, and
compared the results with serologicalrK39-RDT. Our study shows the capability of urinebased tests in detecting anti-Leishmania antibodies effectively for both VL and PKDL diagnosis. The ability of dipstick test to demonstrate negative results after six months in
90% of the VL cases after treatment could be useful as a test of clinical cure. Urine-based
tests can therefore replace the need for invasive practices and ensure better diagnosi

Soil conservation issues in India
Despite years of study and substantial investment in remediation and prevention, soil erosion continues to be a major environmental problem with regard to land use in India and elsewhere around the world. Furthermore, changing climate and/or weather patterns are exacerbating the problem. Our objective was to review past and current soil conservation programmes in India to better understand how production-, environmental-, social-, economic- and policy-related issues have affected soil and water conservation and the incentives needed to address the most critical problems. We found that to achieve success in soil and water conservation policies, institutions and operations must be co-ordinated using a holistic approach. Watershed programmes have been shown to be one of the most effective strategies for bringing socio-economic change to different parts of India. Within both dryland and rainfed areas, watershed management has quietly revolutionized agriculture by aligning various sectors through technological soil and water conservation interventions and land-use diversification. Significant results associated with various watershed-scale soil and water conservation programmes and interventions that were effective for reducing land degradation and improving productivity in different parts of the country are discussed
