Chiral Perturbation Theory in Few-Nucleon Systems
The low-energy effective theory of nuclear physics based on chiral symmetry
is reviewed. Topics discussed include the nucleon-nucleon force, few-body
potentials, isospin violation, pion-deuteron scattering, proton-neutron
radiative capture, pion photoproduction on the deuteron, and pion production in

An atomic mechanism for the boson peak in metallic glasses
The boson peak in metallic glasses is modeled in terms of local structural
shear rearrangements. Using Eshelby's solution of the corresponding elasticity
theory problem (J. D. Eshelby, Proc. Roy. Soc. A241, 376 (1957)), one can
calculate the saddle point energy of such a structural rearrangement. The
neighbourhood of the saddle point gives rise to soft resonant vibrational
modes. One can calculate their density, their kinetic energy, their fourth
order potential term and their coupling to longitudinal and transverse sound

Role of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine projection in emotional learning
Amygdala dopamine is crucially involved in the acquisition of Pavlovian associations, as measured via conditioned approach to the location of the unconditioned stimulus (US). However, learning begins before skeletomotor output, so this study assessed whether amygdala dopamine is also involved in earlier 'emotional' learning. A variant of the conditioned reinforcement (CR) procedure was validated where training was restricted to curtail the development of selective conditioned approach to the US location, and effects of amygdala dopamine manipulations before training or later CR testing assessed. Experiment 1a presented a light paired (CS+ group) or unpaired (CS- group) with a US. There were 1, 2 or 10 sessions, 4 trials per session. Then, the US was removed, and two novel levers presented. One lever (CR+) presented the light, and lever pressing was recorded. Experiment 1b also included a tone stimulus. Experiment 2 applied intra-amygdala R(+) 7-OH-DPAT (10 nmol/1.0 A mu l/side) before two training sessions (Experiment 2a) or a CR session (Experiment 2b). For Experiments 1a and 1b, the CS+ group preferred the CR+ lever across all sessions. Conditioned alcove approach during 1 or 2 training sessions or associated CR tests was low and nonspecific. In Experiment 2a, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT before training greatly diminished lever pressing during a subsequent CR test, preferentially on the CR+ lever. For Experiment 2b, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT infusions before the CR test also reduced lever pressing. Manipulations of amygdala dopamine impact the earliest stage of learning in which emotional reactions may be most prevalent
In situ studies of materials for high temperature CO2 capture and storage.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) offers a possible solution to curb the CO2 emissions from stationary sources in the coming decades, considering the delays in shifting energy generation to carbon neutral sources such as wind, solar and biomass. The most mature technology for post-combustion capture uses a liquid sorbent, amine scrubbing. However, with the existing technology, a large amount of heat is required for the regeneration of the liquid sorbent, which introduces a substantial energy penalty. The use of alternative sorbents for CO2 capture, such as the CaO-CaCO3 system, has been investigated extensively in recent years. However there are significant problems associated with the use of CaO based sorbents, the most challenging one being the deactivation of the sorbent material. When sorbents such as natural limestone are used, the capture capacity of the solid sorbent can fall by as much as 90 mol% after the first 20 carbonation-regeneration cycles. In this study a variety of techniques were employed to understand better the cause of this deterioration from both a structural and morphological standpoint. X-ray and neutron PDF studies were employed to understand better the local surface and interfacial structures formed upon reaction, finding that after carbonation the surface roughness is decreased for CaO. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction studies showed that carbonation with added steam leads to a faster and more complete conversion of CaO than under conditions without steam, as evidenced by the phases seen at different depths within the sample. Finally, in situ X-ray tomography experiments were employed to track the morphological changes in the sorbents during carbonation, observing directly the reduction in porosity and increase in tortuosity of the pore network over multiple calcination reactions
Diversity of supernovae Ia determined using equivalent widths of Si II 4000
Spectroscopic and photometric properties of low and high-z supernovae Ia (SNe
Ia) have been analyzed in order to achieve a better understanding of their
diversity and to identify possible SN Ia sub-types. We use wavelet transformed
spectra in which one can easily measure spectral features. We investigate the
\ion{Si}{II} 4000 equivalent width (EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace). The
ability and, especially, the ease in extending the method to SNe at high- is
demonstrated. We applied the method to 110 SNe Ia and found correlations
between EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace and parameters related to the
light-curve shape for 88 supernovae with available photometry. No evidence for
evolution of EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace with redshift is seen. Three
sub-classes of SNe Ia were confirmed using an independent cluster analysis with
only light-curve shape, colour, and EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace. SNe from
high- samples seem to follow a similar grouping to nearby objects. The
EW_w\lbrace\ion{Si}{II}\rbrace value measured on a single spectrum may point
towards SN Ia sub-classification, avoiding the need for expansion velocity

The S-Wave Pion-Nucleon Scattering Lengths from Pionic Atoms using Effective Field Theory
The pion-deuteron scattering length is computed to next-to-next-to-leading
order in baryon chiral perturbation theory. A modified power-counting is then
formulated which properly accounts for infrared enhancements engendered by the
large size of the deuteron, as compared to the pion Compton wavelength. We use
the precise experimental value of the real part of the pion-deuteron scattering
length determined from the decay of pionic deuterium, together with constraints
on pion-nucleon scattering lengths from the decay of pionic hydrogen, to
extract the isovector and isoscalar S-wave pion-nucleon scattering lengths, a^-
and a^+, respectively. We find a^-=(0.0918 \pm 0.0013) M_\pi^{-1} and
a^+=(-0.0034 \pm 0.0007) M_\pi^{-1}.Comment: 19 pages LaTeX, 7 eps fig
The UK register of HIV seroconverters: Methods and analytical issues
A Register of HIV-infected persons who have had a negative antibody test within 3 years of their first antibody positive test (seroconverters) is being set up in the UK to monitor the distribution of times from HIV seroconversion to AIDS (the incubation period) and to death. It will also provide a national resource for use by those designing studies in this group of individuals. Clinicians caring for HIV-positive persons in Genito-Urinary Medicine, Infectious Disease and other departments throughout the UK were asked to participate by providing information on eligible subjects. Most laboratories undertaking HIV antibody testing were also contacted and asked to provide the name of the attending clinician for all seroconverters identified through the HIV laboratory reporting systems of the PHLS Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) and the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health (SCIEH) and for any other seroconverters known to them but not identified by CDSC or SCIEH. Data items sought for the Register include: sex, ethnic group, probable route of HIV transmission, annual CD4 counts, details of therapy and prophylaxis prescribed, AIDS-defining events and vital status. Follow up information is collected annually. Wherever possible, all seroconverters known to a clinic have been identified, whether currently alive or dead, either from clinic records or laboratory reporting or both. The objective is to establish and update a complete register of seroconverters on a long-term basis to provide reliable estimates of the incubation period on which future projections of AIDS cases in the UK can be made
Bioinformatics advances in saliva diagnostics
There is a need recognized by the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research and the National Cancer Institute to advance
basic, translational and clinical saliva research. The goal of the Salivaomics Knowledge Base (SKB) is to create a data management system and web resource constructed to support human salivaomics research. To maximize the utility of the SKB for retrieval,
integration and analysis of data, we have developed the Saliva Ontology and SDxMart. This article reviews the informatics advances in saliva diagnostics made possible by the Saliva Ontology and SDxMart
The sub-energetic GRB 031203 as a cosmic analogue to GRB 980425
Over the six years since the discovery of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425,
associated with the nearby (distance, ~40 Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers
have fiercely debated the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at
cosmological distances, (redshift, z~1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in
gamma-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed the explosion
was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here, we report observations of the radio
and X-ray afterglow of the recent z=0.105 GRB 031203 and demonstrate that it
too is sub-energetic. Our result, when taken together with the low gamma-ray
luminosity, suggest that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425.
We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed
off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically
sub-energetic gamma-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows.
Intensive follow-up of faint bursts with smooth gamma-ray light curves (common
to both GRBs 031203 and 980425) may enable us to reveal their expected large

Green functions for generalized point interactions in 1D: A scattering approach
Recently, general point interactions in one dimension has been used to model
a large number of different phenomena in quantum mechanics. Such potentials,
however, requires some sort of regularization to lead to meaningful results.
The usual ways to do so rely on technicalities which may hide important
physical aspects of the problem. In this work we present a new method to
calculate the exact Green functions for general point interactions in 1D. Our
approach differs from previous ones because it is based only on physical
quantities, namely, the scattering coefficients, and , to construct .
Renormalization or particular mathematical prescriptions are not invoked. The
simple formulation of the method makes it easy to extend to more general
contexts, such as for lattices of general point interactions; on a line; on
