The primary cosmic ray spectrum above 10 to the 19th power eV
Progress on a re-evaluation of the spectrum of cosmic rays determined with the Haverah Park shower array is described. Particular attention is paid to the reality of some giant showers
Adolescents’ preferences for sexual dimorphism are influenced by relative exposure to male and female faces
Exposure to a particular population of faces can increase ratings of the normality and attractiveness of similar-looking faces. Such exposure can also refine the perceived boundaries of that face population, such that other faces are more readily perceived as dissimilar. We predicted that relatively less exposure to opposite-sex faces, as experienced by children at single-sex compared with mixed-sex schools, would decrease ratings of the attractiveness of sexual dimorphism in opposite-sex faces (that is, boys at single-sex schools would show a decreased preference for feminised faces, and girls at single-sex schools would show a decreased preference for masculinised faces). Consistent with this prediction, girls at single-sex compared with mixed-sex schools demonstrated significantly stronger preferences for facial femininity in both male and female faces. Boys at single-sex compared with mixed-sex schools demonstrated marginally stronger preferences for facial masculinity in male faces, but did not differ in their ratings of female faces. These effects were attenuated among some single-sex school pupils by the presence of adolescent opposite-sex siblings. These data add to the evidence that long-term exposure to a particular face population can influence judgements of other faces, and contribute to our understanding of the factors leading to individual differences in face preferences
Two superluminous supernovae from the early universe discovered by the Supernova Legacy Survey
We present spectra and lightcurves of SNLS 06D4eu and SNLS 07D2bv, two
hydrogen-free superluminous supernovae discovered by the Supernova Legacy
Survey. At z = 1.588, SNLS 06D4eu is the highest redshift superluminous SN with
a spectrum, at M_U = -22.7 is one of the most luminous SNe ever observed, and
gives a rare glimpse into the restframe ultraviolet where these supernovae put
out their peak energy. SNLS 07D2bv does not have a host galaxy redshift, but
based on the supernova spectrum, we estimate it to be at z ~ 1.5. Both
supernovae have similar observer-frame griz lightcurves, which map to restframe
lightcurves in the U-band and UV, rising in ~ 20 restframe days or longer, and
declining over a similar timescale. The lightcurves peak in the shortest
wavelengths first, consistent with an expanding blackbody starting near 15,000
K and steadily declining in temperature. We compare the spectra to theoretical
models, and identify lines of C II, C III, Fe III, and Mg II in the spectrum of
SNLS 06D4eu and SCP 06F6, and find that they are consistent with an expanding
explosion of only a few solar masses of carbon, oxygen, and other trace metals.
Thus the progenitors appear to be related to those suspected for SNe Ic. A high
kinetic energy, 10^52 ergs, is also favored. Normal mechanisms of powering
core- collapse or thermonuclear supernovae do not seem to work for these
supernovae. We consider models powered by 56Ni decay and interaction with
circumstellar material, but find that the creation and spin-down of a magnetar
with a period of 2ms, magnetic field of 2 x 10^14 Gauss, and a 3 solar mass
progenitor provides the best fit to the data.Comment: ApJ, accepted, 43 pages, 15 figure
SiFTO: An Empirical Method for Fitting SNe Ia Light Curves
We present SiFTO, a new empirical method for modeling type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia) light curves by manipulating a spectral template. We make use of
high-redshift SN observations when training the model, allowing us to extend it
bluer than rest frame U. This increases the utility of our high-redshift SN
observations by allowing us to use more of the available data. We find that
when the shape of the light curve is described using a stretch prescription,
applying the same stretch at all wavelengths is not an adequate description.
SiFTO therefore uses a generalization of stretch which applies different
stretch factors as a function of both the wavelength of the observed filter and
the stretch in the rest-frame B band. We compare SiFTO to other published
light-curve models by applying them to the same set of SN photometry, and
demonstrate that SiFTO and SALT2 perform better than the alternatives when
judged by the scatter around the best fit luminosity distance relationship. We
further demonstrate that when SiFTO and SALT2 are trained on the same data set

Information Transfer in Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone (GnRH) Signaling: extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-mediated feedback loops control hormone sensing
The computation model used in the study of GnRH signalling which was used to generate the data appearing in this paper is in ORE at http://hdl.handle.net/10871/27844Cell signaling pathways are noisy communication channels, and statistical measures derived from information theory can be used to quantify the information they transfer. Here we use single cell signaling measures to calculate mutual information as a measure of information transfer via gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptors (GnRHR) to extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) or nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT). This revealed mutual information values <1 bit, implying that individual GnRH-responsive cells cannot unambiguously differentiate even two equally probable input concentrations. Addressing possible mechanisms for mitigation of information loss, we focused on the ERK pathway and developed a stochastic activation model incorporating negative feedback and constitutive activity. Model simulations revealed interplay between fast (min) and slow (min-h) negative feedback loops with maximal information transfer at intermediate feedback levels. Consistent with this, experiments revealed that reducing negative feedback (by expressing catalytically inactive ERK2) and increasing negative feedback (by Egr1-driven expression of dual-specificity phosphatase 5 (DUSP5)) both reduced information transfer from GnRHR to ERK. It was also reduced by blocking protein synthesis (to prevent GnRH from increasing DUSP expression) but did not differ for different GnRHRs that do or do not undergo rapid homologous desensitization. Thus, the first statistical measures of information transfer via these receptors reveals that individual cells are unreliable sensors of GnRH concentration and that this reliability is maximal at intermediate levels of ERK-mediated negative feedback but is not influenced by receptor desensitization.This work was supported by a Biochemical and Biophysical Science Research Council award (BBSRC BB/J014699/1; to C. The Constitutive Relations and the Magnetoelectric Effect for Moving Media
In this paper the constitutive relations for moving media with homogeneous
and isotropic electric and magnetic properties are presented as the connections
between the generalized magnetization-polarization bivector and
the electromagnetic field F. Using the decompositions of F and ,
it is shown how the polarization vector P(x) and the magnetization vector M(x)
depend on E, B and two different velocity vectors, u - the bulk velocity vector
of the medium, and v - the velocity vector of the observers who measure E and B
fields. These constitutive relations with four-dimensional geometric
quantities, which correctly transform under the Lorentz transformations (LT),
are compared with Minkowski's constitutive relations with the 3-vectors and
several essential differences are pointed out. They are caused by the fact
that, contrary to the general opinion, the usual transformations of the
3-vectors , , , , etc. are
not the LT. The physical explanation is presented for the existence of the
magnetoelectric effect in moving media that essentially differs from the

Constraining Type Ia Supernovae progenitors from three years of SNLS data
While it is generally accepted that Type Ia supernovae are the result of the
explosion of a carbon-oxygen White Dwarf accreting mass in a binary system, the
details of their genesis still elude us, and the nature of the binary companion
is uncertain. Kasen (2010) points out that the presence of a non-degenerate
companion in the progenitor system could leave an observable trace: a flux
excess in the early rise portion of the lightcurve caused by the ejecta impact
with the companion itself. This excess would be observable only under favorable
viewing angles, and its intensity depends on the nature of the companion. We
searched for the signature of a non-degenerate companion in three years of
Supernova Legacy Survey data by generating synthetic lightcurves accounting for
the effects of shocking and comparing true and synthetic time series with
Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Our most constraining result comes from noting that
the shocking effect is more prominent in rest-frame B than V band: we rule out
a contribution from white dwarf-red giant binary systems to Type Ia supernova

Looking like a leader-facial shape predicts perceived height and leadership ability.
Judgments of leadership ability from face images predict the outcomes of actual political elections and are correlated with leadership success in the corporate world. The specific facial cues that people use to judge leadership remain unclear, however. Physical height is also associated with political and organizational success, raising the possibility that facial cues of height contribute to leadership perceptions. Consequently, we assessed whether cues to height exist in the face and, if so, whether they are associated with perception of leadership ability. We found that facial cues to perceived height had a strong relationship with perceived leadership ability. Furthermore, when allowed to manually manipulate faces, participants increased facial cues associated with perceived height in order to maximize leadership perception. A morphometric analysis of face shape revealed that structural facial masculinity was not responsible for the relationship between perceived height and perceived leadership ability. Given the prominence of facial appearance in making social judgments, facial cues to perceived height may have a significant influence on leadership selection
Supernova Shock Breakout from a Red Supergiant
Massive stars undergo a violent death when the supply of nuclear fuel in
their cores is exhausted, resulting in a catastrophic "core-collapse"
supernova. Such events are usually only detected at least a few days after the
star has exploded. Observations of the supernova SNLS-04D2dc with the Galaxy
Evolution Explorer space telescope reveal a radiative precursor from the
supernova shock before the shock reached the surface of the star and show the
initial expansion of the star at the beginning of the explosion. Theoretical
models of the ultraviolet light curve confirm that the progenitor was a red
supergiant, as expected for this type of supernova. These observations provide
a way to probe the physics of core-collapse supernovae and the internal
