Toward Precision Measurement of Central Black Hole Masses

We review briefly direct and indirect methods of measuring the masses of black holes in galactic nuclei, and then focus attention on supermassive black holes in active nuclei, with special attention to results from reverberation mapping and their limitations. We find that the intrinsic scatter in the relationship between the AGN luminosity and the broad-line region size is very small, ~0.11 dex, comparable to the uncertainties in the better reverberation measurements. We also find that the relationship between reverberation-based black hole masses and host-galaxy bulge luminosities also seems to have surprisingly little intrinsic scatter, ~0.17 dex. We note, however, that there are still potential systematics that could affect the overall mass calibration at the level of a factor of a few.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Wittgenstein et la reconnaissance d’Autrui (entre perception et concept)

Le but essentiel de cet article est d’analyser la notion de « relation intersubjective » chez Wittgenstein. En particulier, nous nous proposons de découvrir si le philosophe aborde la relation Moi-Autrui en termes épistémiques, c’est-à-dire dans une dimension conceptuelle, ou s’il déplace la question sur une dimension différente. À ce propos, nous montrons que, loin d’être considérée au niveau épistémique de la connaissance conceptuelle, la relation Moi-Autrui est déplacée par Wittgenstein au niveau pratique anthropologique de la reconnaissance (niveau des jeux de langage). Une reconnaissance immédiate, c’est-à-dire sans la médiation du raisonnement, remplace chez le philosophe la perspective traditionnelle cartésienne d’une attitude conceptuelle et d’interprétation de l’autre

O relato de Flora Tristan: tensão entre o ser e o parecer de uma pária

Neste artigo, apresentaremos o relato de viagem de Flora Tristan, no seu livro Peregrinações de uma pária (2000 [1838]). O objetivo consiste em apreender, a partir dos aspectos sensíveis da obra, o seu projeto enunciativo e, mais especificamente, como se dá a construção do seu arco tensivo (MANCINI, 2020). Trata-se de um esforço em conceber os preconceitos relacionados ao ser mulher, sobretudo no que se refere à esfera matrimonial, compreendidos a partir do ponto de vista da militante. O uso da semiótica tensiva nos permitirá refletir sobre os momentos átonos e tônicos do relato de uma mulher do século XIX, consciente da sua situação: sem direito a se divorciar do marido, à herança paterna, à liberdade. Destacamos, sobretudo, a compreensão das estratégias sensíveis para levar o enunciatário proposto a se sensibilizar com as mazelas enfrentadas por aquela que se encontrava à margem da sociedade, nos baseando, ademais, nos graus de veridicção e na noção de belo gesto. Eis o relato de uma pária para a sociedade, sem a autorização de viver como o seu verdadeiro ser.In this paper, we will present Flora Tristan's travel narrative, Peregrinações de uma pária [Peregrinations of a Pariah] (2000 [1838]). The aim is to apprehend, from the sensitive aspects of the work, its enunciative project and, more specifically, the construction of its tensive arc (MANCINI, 2020). This is an effort to conceive the prejudices related to being a woman, especially with regard to the matrimonial sphere, understood from the militant's point of view. The usage of tensive semiotics will allow us to reflect on the atonal and tonic moments of the account of a nineteenth-century woman, conscious of her situation: having no right to divorce from her husband, to paternal inheritance, to be free. We emphasize, above all, an understanding of sensitive strategies to make the proposed enunciatee aware of the suffering faced by those on the margins of society, based on the degrees of veridiction and the notion of the beau geste. Educación y política: El lugar de lo educativo en la experiencia de institucionalización de la modernidad política en Argentina

In this paper, we emphasize the central importance of the school for the development of political modernity in Argentina. The strongly repressive and exclusionary nature of the State Centralized Public Education System (SIPCE, by its initials in Spanish) is not only highlighted regarding its role in the creation of the School of Discipline -which operated on social groups considered exponents of barbarism-, but, above all, regarding its role as the producer of new subjects. The school became the most typical institution for creating citizenship: men and women recognize themselves as Argentine citizens and holders of universal rights because of its deep influence. However, these educational forays into the liberal political project faced resistance from the very beginning of their systematic implementation: there were agents and groups that understood education as a powerful tool to build a socialization that took history into account for transferring and giving a new meaning to it, instead of killing it. Concerning the educational, there are other experiences and meanings to be found in the expectations of the popular sectors, strongly linked to work-related education. The attempts implemented from 1944 onwards by the National Commission for Apprenticeships and Professional Guidance express the moment in which those expectations were able to settle into state institutions.En este trabajo, argumentamos la importancia central de la escuela para el desarrollo de la modernidad política en Argentina. Se destaca no solo el carácter fuertemente represivo y excluyente del Sistema de Instrucción Pública Centralizado Estatal (SIPCE), que cristalizó en la Escuela de la Disciplina y operó sobre los grupos sociales considerados exponentes de la barbarie, sino, sobre todo, su carácter productor de nuevos sujetos. La escuela se convierte en la institución creadora de ciudadanía por excelencia: es a partir de su profunda incidencia que los hombres y mujeres se reconocen como ciudadanos argentinos, portadores de derechos universales. Sin embargo, estas incursiones educativas insertas en el proyecto político liberal, encontraron resistencias desde el inicio de su intervención sistemática: hubo agentes y grupos que entendieron la educación como un lugar potente para construir una socialización que, en vez de matar la propia historia, la tomara en cuenta para transmitirla y resignificarla. En las expectativas de los sectores populares, fuertemente relacionadas a la formación vinculada con el trabajo, pueden encontrarse otras experiencias y sentidos respecto de lo educativo. La tentativa de la Comisión Nacional de Aprendizajes y Orientación Profesional, extendida a partir de 1944, muestra el momento en que aquellas expectativas lograron desplegarse en instituciones estatales

Validación del índice de impacto en salud oral (OHIP-14SP) en población adulta mayor chilena: estudio piloto

47 p.En odontología existen índices psicométricos para medir la Salud Oral Relacionada a Calidad de Vida (OHRQoL). El índice de impacto en salud oral (OHIP- 49) como instrumento original, ha sido traducido al español (OHIP-49Sp), manteniendo su fiabilidad. No obstante ha demostrado ser muy extenso por su número de preguntas. Es por esto que se busca abreviar a un instrumento acotado, que mantenga la fiabilidad, para que así sea más específico y se utilice menor tiempo en su aplicación. Materiales y Método: En el estudio principal se aplicó el instrumento original (OHIP-49Sp) y un examen clínico a 150 pacientes. Mediante análisis de Friedman, se obtuvo las 14 preguntas con mayor impacto sobre la población adulta mayor. De esta maner se logró extraer un instrumento abreviado (OHIP-14Sp), el cual fue aplicado en un estudio piloto en 20 sujetos adultos mayores que acudían a tratamiento dental en el centro de clínicas odontológicas de la Universidad de Talca y Centros de Atención Primaria en Salud. Resultados: Se seleccionaron las preguntas número 3, 7, 10, 16, 19, 22, 28, 31, 34, 38, 41, 42, 44 y 47 del OHIP-49 Sp para la conformación del instrumento OHIP-14 Sp. La consistencia interna, determinada con el α de Cronbach, es considerada suficiente para garantizar la fiabilidad del instrumento con un valor de α =0,883. La pregunta 2 fue la única que al eliminarla aumentaría el α. Conclusión: El instrumento OHIP-14 Sp demostró una muy buena confiabilidad al medir el impacto de la Salud Oral Relacionada a Calidad de Vida, basada en la prueba de consistencia interna. *Palabras claves: Salud Oral Relacionada a Calidad de Vida; Indice de Impacto en Salud Oral; OHIP 14sp

Mulheres francesas do século XIX

As a way of contributing to the understanding of women's struggle for rights, especially in the evolution and setbacks experienced by female characters, this article aims to outline a panorama of French women in the 19th century. The work is based on the assumption of following the political changes that occurred in France, and how they marked the lives of female citizens. Alongside the major events, we shed light on the reactions of female characters which culminated in the structuring of the feminism.Como forma de contribuir para a compreensão da luta das mulheres por direitos, sobretudo na evolução e retrocessos vivenciados pelos personagens femininos, o presente artigo enseja esboçar um panorama das mulheres francesas do século XIX. O trabalho toma como pressuposto acompanhar as mudanças políticas ocorridas no cenário da França, e como elas marcaram a vida das cidadãs. Ao lado dos grandes marcos, lançamos luz sobre as “re-ações” de personagens femininos que culminaram na estruturação do chamado feminismo
