Combination of nitrate (N, O) and boron isotopic ratios with microbiological indicators for the determination of nitrate sources in karstic groundwater
International audienceA new approach based on measurements of nitrate and boron isotopic composition associated with microbiological indicators for the determination of nitrate origin in karstic groundwater (SW, France) is presented. Nitrate and boron isotopic data indicate an animal source of nitrate (delta N-15-NO3- > 5 parts per thousand, delta O-18-NO3- < 10 parts per thousand and delta B-11 similar to 25 parts per thousand). Microorganism detection (bacteriophages) confirmed contamination from animal sources and proved fast water transfer (2-3 days) from surface to groundwater
Comparison of prestellar core elongations and large-scale molecular cloud structures in the Lupus 1 region
Turbulence and magnetic fields are expected to be important for regulating molecular cloud formation and evolution. However, their effects on sub-parsec to 100 parsec scales, leading to the formation of starless cores, are not well understood. We investigate the prestellar core structure morphologies obtained from analysis of the Herschel-SPIRE 350 mum maps of the Lupus I cloud. This distribution is first compared on a statistical basis to the large-scale shape of the main filament. We find the distribution of the elongation position angle of the cores to be consistent with a random distribution, which means no specific orientation of the morphology of the cores is observed with respect to the mean orientation of the large-scale filament in Lupus I, nor relative to a large-scale bent filament model. This distribution is also compared to the mean orientation of the large-scale magnetic fields probed at 350 mum with the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Telescope for Polarimetry during its 2010 campaign. Here again we do not find any correlation between the core morphology distribution and the average orientation of the magnetic fields on parsec scales. Our main conclusion is that the local filament dynamics---including secondary filaments that often run orthogonally to the primary filament---and possibly small-scale variations in the local magnetic field direction, could be the dominant factors for explaining the final orientation of each core
Hydrodynamic Interaction between an Accretion Flow and a Strong Wind around a Black Hole
In 2015, space heating and domestic hot water production accounted for around 40% of the Swiss final energy consumption. Reaching the goals of the 2050 energy strategy will require significantly reducing this share despite the growing building stock. Renewables are numerous but subject to spatial–temporal constraints. Territorial planning of energy distribution systems enabling the integration of renewables requires having a spatial–temporal characterization of the energy demand. This paper presents two bottom-up statistical extrapolation models for the estimation of the geo-dependent heat and electricity demand of the Swiss building stock. The heat demand is estimated by means of a statistical bottom-up model applied at the building level. At the municipality level, the electricity load curve is estimated by combining socio-economic indicators with average consumption per activity and/or electric device. This approach also allows to break down the estimated electricity demand according to activity type (e.g., households, various industry, and service activities) and appliance type (e.g., lighting, motor force, fridges). The total estimated aggregated demand is 94 TWh for heat and 58 TWh for electricity, which represent a deviation of 2.9 and 0.5%, respectively compared to the national energy consumption statistics. In addition, comparisons between estimated and measured electric load curves are done to validate the proposed approach. Finally, these models are used to build a geo-referred database of heat and electricity demand for the entire Swiss territory. As an application of the heat demand model, a realistic saving potential is estimated for the existing building stock; this potential could be achieved through by a deep retrofit program. One advantage of the statistical bottom-up model approach is that it allows to simulate a building stock that replicates the diversity of building demand. This point is important in order to correctly account for the mismatch between gross and net energy saving potential, often called performance gap. The impact of this performance gap is substantial since the estimated net saving potential is only half of the gross one
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Catalog V. Seventh Data Release
We present the fifth edition of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Quasar
Catalog, which is based upon the SDSS Seventh Data Release. The catalog, which
contains 105,783 spectroscopically confirmed quasars, represents the conclusion
of the SDSS-I and SDSS-II quasar survey. The catalog consists of the SDSS
objects that have luminosities larger than M_i = -22.0 (in a cosmology with H_0
= 70 km/s/Mpc Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega_Lambda = 0.7) have at least one emission
line with FWHM larger than 1000 km/s or have interesting/complex absorption
features, are fainter than i > 15.0 and have highly reliable redshifts. The
catalog covers an area of 9380 deg^2. The quasar redshifts range from 0.065 to
5.46, with a median value of 1.49; the catalog includes 1248 quasars at
redshifts greater than four, of which 56 are at redshifts greater than five.
The catalog contains 9210 quasars with i < 18; slightly over half of the
entries have i< 19. For each object the catalog presents positions accurate to
better than 0.1" rms per coordinate, five-band (ugriz) CCD-based photometry
with typical accuracy of 0.03 mag, and information on the morphology and
selection method. The catalog also contains radio, near-infrared, and X-ray
emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area
surveys. The calibrated digital spectra cover the wavelength region 3800-9200
Ang. at a spectral resolution R = 2000 the spectra can be retrieved from the
SDSS public database using the information provided in the catalog. Over 96% of
the objects in the catalog were discovered by the SDSS. We also include a
supplemental list of an additional 207 quasars with SDSS spectra whose archive
photometric information is incomplete.Comment: Accepted, to appear in AJ, 7 figures, electronic version of Table 2

Herschel-ATLAS: the far-infrared properties and star-formation rates of broad absorption line quasi-stellar objects
We have used data from the Herschel-ATLAS at 250, 350 and 500 \mu m to
determine the far-infrared (FIR) properties of 50 Broad Absorption Line Quasars
(BAL QSOs). Our sample contains 49 high-ionization BAL QSOs (HiBALs) and 1
low-ionization BAL QSO (LoBAL) which are compared against a sample of 329
non-BAL QSOs. These samples are matched over the redshift range 1.5 \leq z <
2.3 and in absolute i-band magnitude over the range -28 \leq M_{i} \leq -24. Of
these, 3 BAL QSOs (HiBALs) and 27 non-BAL QSOs are detected at the > 5 sigma
level. We calculate star-formation rates (SFR) for our individually detected
HiBAL QSOs and the non-detected LoBAL QSO as well as average SFRs for the BAL
and non-BAL QSO samples based on stacking the Herschel data. We find no
difference between the HiBAL and non-BAL QSO samples in the FIR, even when
separated based on differing BAL QSO classifications. Using Mrk 231 as a
template, the weighted mean SFR is estimated to be \approx240\pm21 M_{\odot}
yr^{-1} for the full sample, although this figure should be treated as an upper
limit if AGN-heated dust makes a contribution to the FIR emission. Despite
tentative claims in the literature, we do not find a dependence of {\sc C\,iv}
equivalent width on FIR emission, suggesting that the strength of any outflow
in these objects is not linked to their FIR output. These results strongly
suggest that BAL QSOs (more specifically HiBALs) can be accommodated within a
simple AGN unified scheme in which our line-of-sight to the nucleus intersects
outflowing material. Models in which HiBALs are caught towards the end of a
period of enhanced spheroid and black-hole growth, during which a wind
terminates the star-formation activity, are not supported by the observed FIR
properties.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Entropy production and coarse graining of the climate fields in a general circulation model
We extend the analysis of the thermodynamics of the climate system by investigating the role played by processes taking place at various spatial and temporal scales through a procedure of coarse graining. We show that the coarser is the graining of the climatic fields, the lower is the resulting estimate of the material entropy production. In other terms, all the spatial and temporal scales of variability of the thermodynamic fields provide a positive contribution to the material entropy production. This may be interpreted also as that, at all scales, the temperature fields and the heating fields resulting from the convergence of turbulent fluxes have a negative correlation, while the opposite holds between the temperature fields and the radiative heating fields. Moreover, we obtain that the latter correlations are stronger, which confirms that radiation acts as primary driver for the climatic processes, while the material fluxes dampen the resulting fluctuations through dissipative processes. We also show, using specific coarse-graining procedures, how one can separate the various contributions to the material entropy production coming from the dissipation of kinetic energy, the vertical sensible and latent heat fluxes, and the large scale horizontal fluxes, without resorting to the full three-dimensional time dependent fields. We find that most of the entropy production is associated to irreversible exchanges occurring along the vertical direction, and that neglecting the horizontal and time variability of the fields has a relatively small impact on the estimate of the material entropy production. The approach presented here seems promising for testing climate models, for assessing the impact of changing their parametrizations and their resolution, as well as for investigating the atmosphere of exoplanets, because it allows for evaluating the error in the estimate of their thermodynamical properties due to the lack of high-resolution data. The findings on the impact of coarse graining on the thermodynamic fields on the estimate of the material entropy production deserve to be explored in a more general context, because they provide a way for understanding the relationship between forced fluctuations and dissipative processes in continuum systems
Automated data processing architecture for the Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey
The Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) is a multi-year direct
imaging survey of 600 stars to discover and characterize young Jovian
exoplanets and their environments. We have developed an automated data
architecture to process and index all data related to the survey uniformly. An
automated and flexible data processing framework, which we term the Data
Cruncher, combines multiple data reduction pipelines together to process all
spectroscopic, polarimetric, and calibration data taken with GPIES. With no
human intervention, fully reduced and calibrated data products are available
less than an hour after the data are taken to expedite follow-up on potential
objects of interest. The Data Cruncher can run on a supercomputer to reprocess
all GPIES data in a single day as improvements are made to our data reduction
pipelines. A backend MySQL database indexes all files, which are synced to the
cloud, and a front-end web server allows for easy browsing of all files
associated with GPIES. To help observers, quicklook displays show reduced data
as they are processed in real-time, and chatbots on Slack post observing
information as well as reduced data products. Together, the GPIES automated
data processing architecture reduces our workload, provides real-time data
reduction, optimizes our observing strategy, and maintains a homogeneously
reduced dataset to study planet occurrence and instrument performance.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, accepted in JATI
The Skin Ivory Spot. A Possible Indicator for Skinfield Photo-Carcinogenesis in Recreational Sunbed Addicts
Introduction: For a decade or so, artificial sources of restricted light wavelengths, particularly sunbeds, have progressively gained popularity among adolescents and young adults. Warnings were raised focusing on the risk of accelerated photoaging and photocarcinogenesis. The ULEV (ultraviolet light-enhanced visualization) method is a convenient noninvasive way identifying subtle pigmentary changes presenting as a mottled subclinical melanoderma (MSM). Of note, rare spotty amelanotic macules presenting as skin ivory spots (SIS) was reported on any part of the body. Subjects and method: This work is the first attempt at evaluating the changes in the MSM and SIS spots developed on the skin of 33 phototype III young women designated as avid users involved in frequent exposures to sunshine and sunbeds for lifestyle purposes for a duration of at least 120 months. Results: MSM was markedly heterogeneous and was distinctly obvious in the majority of adepts of frequent natural and artificial photoexposures. SIS was particularly developed in subjects presenting with severe MSM patterns. Discussion: MSM and SIS are more severe in subjects frequently exposed to sunbeds and sun exposures. These signs possibly represent a risk marker for field photocarcinogenesis
Dynamical Mass Measurement of the Young Spectroscopic Binary V343 Normae AaAb Resolved With the Gemini Planet Imager
We present new spatially resolved astrometry and photometry from the Gemini
Planet Imager of the inner binary of the young multiple star system V343
Normae, which is a member of the beta Pictoris moving group. V343 Normae
comprises a K0 and mid-M star in a ~4.5 year orbit (AaAb) and a wide 10" M5
companion (B). By combining these data with archival astrometry and radial
velocities we fit the orbit and measure individual masses for both components
of M_Aa = 1.10 +/- 0.10 M_sun and M_Ab = 0.290 +/- 0.018 M_sun. Comparing to
theoretical isochrones, we find good agreement for the measured masses and JHK
band magnitudes of the two components consistent with the age of the beta Pic
moving group. We derive a model-dependent age for the beta Pic moving group of
26 +/- 3 Myr by combining our results for V343 Normae with literature
measurements for GJ 3305, which is another group member with resolved binary
components and dynamical masses.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Accepted to A
