Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth modelling and indicators for offshore aquaculture in Europe under climate change uncertainty
Aquaculture development in Europe, while critical to the European Union (EU) Blue Growth strategy, has stagnated over the past decades due largely to high competition for space in the nearshore coastal zone among potential uses and the lack of clear priorities, policy, and planning at EU and national scales. Broad Marine Spatial Planning, including the designation of Allocated Zones for Aquaculture, requires spatial data at the corresponding broad spatial scale, which has not been readily available, as well as model projections to assess potential impacts of climate change. Here, daily chlorophyll-a, water temperature, salinity, and current speed outputs from a marine ecosystem model encompassing the coastal North East Atlantic, the North Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea (the pan-European POLCOMS-ERSEM model configuration) are used to drive a Dynamic Energy Budget growth model of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas). Areas broadly suitable for growth were identified using threshold tolerance range masking applied using the model variables mentioned above, as well as bathymetry data. Oyster growth time series were transformed into simplified indicators that are meaningful to the industry (e.g., time to market weight) and mapped. In addition to early-century indicator maps, modelling and mapping were also carried out for two contrasting late-century climate change projections, following representative concentration pathways 4.5 and 8.5. Areas found to have good oyster growth potential now and into the future were further assessed in terms of their climate robustness (i.e., where oyster growth predictions are comparable between different future climate scenarios). Several areas within Europe were highlighted as priority areas for the development of offshore Pacific oyster cultivation, including coastal waters along the French Atlantic, the southern North Sea, and western Scotland and Ireland. A large potential growth hot spot was also identified along northwestern Africa, associated with a cool, productive upwelling coastal zone. The framework proposed here offers a flexible approach to include a large range of ecological input data, climate and ecosystem model scenarios, aquaculture-related models, species of interest, indicator types, and tolerance thresholds. Such information is suggested to be included in more extensive spatial assessments and planning, along with further socioeconomic and environmental data
The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury IV. The Star Formation History of NGC 2976
We present resolved stellar photometry of NGC 2976 obtained with the Advanced
Camera for Surveys (ACS) as part of the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury
(ANGST) program. The data cover the radial extent of the major axis of the disk
out to 6 kpc, or ~6 scale lengths. The outer disk was imaged to a depth of
M_F606W ~ 1, and an inner field was imaged to the crowding limit at a depth of
M_F606W ~ -1. Through detailed analysis and modeling of these CMDs we have
reconstructed the star formation history of the stellar populations currently
residing in these portions of the galaxy, finding similar ancient populations
at all radii but significantly different young populations at increasing radii.
In particular, outside of the well-measured break in the disk surface
brightness profile, the age of the youngest population increases with distance
from the galaxy center, suggesting that star formation is shutting down from
the outside-in. We use our measured star formation history, along with H I
surface density measurements, to reconstruct the surface density profile of the
disk during previous epochs. Comparisons between the recovered star formation
rates and reconstructed gas densities at previous epochs are consistent with
star formation following the Schmidt law during the past 0.5 Gyrs, but with a
drop in star formation efficiency at low gas densities, as seen in local
galaxies at the present day. The current rate and gas density suggest that
rapid star formation in NGC 2976 is currently in the process of ceasing from
the outside-in due to gas depletion. This process of outer disk gas depletion
and inner disk star formation was likely triggered by an interaction with the
core of the M81 group >~1 Gyr ago that stripped the gas from the galaxy halo

The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury
The ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) is a systematic survey to
establish a legacy of uniform multi-color photometry of resolved stars for a
volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies (D<4 Mpc). The survey volume
encompasses 69 galaxies in diverse environments, including close pairs, small &
large groups, filaments, and truly isolated regions. The galaxies include a
nearly complete range of morphological types spanning a factor of ~10^4 in
luminosity and star formation rate. The survey data consists of images taken
with ACS on HST, supplemented with archival data and new WFPC2 imaging taken
after the failure of ACS. Survey images include wide field tilings covering the
full radial extent of each galaxy, and single deep pointings in uncrowded
regions of the most massive galaxies in the volume. The new wide field imaging
in ANGST reaches median 50% completenesses of m_F475W=28.0 mag, m_F606W=27.3
mag, and m_F814W=27.3 mag, several magnitudes below the tip of the red giant
branch (TRGB). The deep fields reach magnitudes sufficient to fully resolve the
structure in the red clump. The resulting photometric catalogs are publicly
accessible and contain over 34 million photometric measurements of >14 million
stars. In this paper we present the details of the sample selection, imaging,
data reduction, and the resulting photometric catalogs, along with an analysis
of the photometric uncertainties (systematic and random), for both the ACS and
WFPC2 imaging. We also present uniformly derived relative distances measured

Cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities in the United States
There are well-established disparities in cancer incidence and outcomes by race/ethnicity that result from the interplay between structural, socioeconomic, socio-environmental, behavioural and biological factors. However, large research studies designed to investigate factors contributing to cancer aetiology and progression have mainly focused on populations of European origin. The limitations in clinicopathological and genetic data, as well as the reduced availability of biospecimens from diverse populations, contribute to the knowledge gap and have the potential to widen cancer health disparities. In this review, we summarise reported disparities and associated factors in the United States of America (USA) for the most common cancers (breast, prostate, lung and colon), and for a subset of other cancers that highlight the complexity of disparities (gastric, liver, pancreas and leukaemia). We focus on populations commonly identified and referred to as racial/ethnic minorities in the USA—African Americans/Blacks, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asians, Native Hawaiians/other Pacific Islanders and Hispanics/Latinos. We conclude that even though substantial progress has been made in understanding the factors underlying cancer health disparities, marked inequities persist. Additional efforts are needed to include participants from diverse populations in the research of cancer aetiology, biology and treatment. Furthermore, to eliminate cancer health disparities, it will be necessary to facilitate access to, and utilisation of, health services to all individuals, and to address structural inequities, including racism, that disproportionally affect racial/ethnic minorities in the USA.Fil: Zavala, Valentina A.. Large-scale genome-wide association studies and meta-analyses of longitudinal change in adult lung function.
BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous loci influencing cross-sectional lung function, but less is known about genes influencing longitudinal change in lung function.
METHODS: We performed GWAS of the rate of change in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) in 14 longitudinal, population-based cohort studies comprising 27,249 adults of European ancestry using linear mixed effects model and combined cohort-specific results using fixed effect meta-analysis to identify novel genetic loci associated with longitudinal change in lung function. Gene expression analyses were subsequently performed for identified genetic loci. As a secondary aim, we estimated the mean rate of decline in FEV1 by smoking pattern, irrespective of genotypes, across these 14 studies using meta-analysis.
RESULTS: The overall meta-analysis produced suggestive evidence for association at the novel IL16/STARD5/TMC3 locus on chromosome 15 (P = 5.71 × 10(-7)). In addition, meta-analysis using the five cohorts with ≥3 FEV1 measurements per participant identified the novel ME3 locus on chromosome 11 (P = 2.18 × 10(-8)) at genome-wide significance. Neither locus was associated with FEV1 decline in two additional cohort studies. We confirmed gene expression of IL16, STARD5, and ME3 in multiple lung tissues. Publicly available microarray data confirmed differential expression of all three genes in lung samples from COPD patients compared with controls. Irrespective of genotypes, the combined estimate for FEV1 decline was 26.9, 29.2 and 35.7 mL/year in never, former, and persistent smokers, respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: In this large-scale GWAS, we identified two novel genetic loci in association with the rate of change in FEV1 that harbor candidate genes with biologically plausible functional links to lung function
2013 Review and Update of the Genetic Counseling Practice Based Competencies by a Task Force of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling
The first practice based competencies (PBCs) for the field of genetic counseling were adopted by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), 1996. Since that time, there has been significant growth in established and new work settings (clinical and non‐clinical) and changes in service delivery models and the roles of genetic counselors. These changes prompted the ABGC to appoint a PBC Task Force in 2011 to review the PBCs with respect to their current relevance and to revise and update them as necessary. There are four domains in the revised PBCs: (I) Genetics Expertise and Analysis (II) Interpersonal, Psychosocial and Counseling Skills (III) Education and (IV) Professional Development and Practice. There are 22 competencies, each clarified with learning objectives or samples of activities and skills; a glossary is included. New competencies were added that address genomics, genetic testing and genetic counselors’ roles in risk assessment, education, supervision, conducting research and presenting research options to patients. With PBCs serving as the pre‐defined abilities or outcomes of training, graduating genetic counselors will be well prepared to enter the field with a minimum level of skills and abilities. Evaluating the Benefits of Aphasia Intervention Delivered in Virtual Reality: Results of a Quasi-Randomised Study
Introduction
This study evaluated an intervention for people with aphasia delivered in a novel virtual reality platform called EVA Park. EVA Park contains a number of functional and fantastic locations and allows for interactive communication between multiple users. Twenty people with aphasia had 5 weeks’ intervention, during which they received daily language stimulation sessions in EVA Park from a support worker. The study employed a quasi randomised design, which compared a group that received immediate intervention with a waitlist control group. Outcome measures explored the effects of intervention on communication and language skills, communicative confidence and feelings of social isolation. Compliance with the intervention was also explored through attrition and usage data.
Results
There was excellent compliance with the intervention, with no participants lost to follow up and most (18/20) receiving at least 88% of the intended treatment dose. Intervention brought about significant gains on a measure of functional communication. Gains were achieved by both groups of participants, once intervention was received, and were well maintained. Changes on the measures of communicative confidence and feelings of social isolation were not achieved. Results are discussed with reference to previous aphasia therapy findings
