    Inflammatory bowel disease-specific autoantibodies in HLA-B27-associated spondyloarthropathies: Increased prevalence of ASCA and pANCA

    Aims: An association between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and spondyloarthropathies (SpA) has repeatedly been reported. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether serologic markers of IBD, e. g. antibodies against Saccharomyces cerevisiae (ASCA), antibodies against exocrine pancreas (PAB) and perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (pANCA) are present in HLA-B27-associated SpA. Methods: 87 patients with HLA-B27-positive SpA and 145 controls were tested for ASCA, PAB and pANCA employing ELISA or indirect immunofluorescence, respectively. Antibody-positive patients were interviewed regarding IBD-related symptoms using a standardized questionnaire. Results/Conclusion: When compared to the controls, ASCA IgA but not ASCA IgG levels were significantly increased in patients with SpA, in particular in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and undifferentiated SpA (uSpA). pANCA were found in increased frequency in patients with SpA whereas PAB were not detected. The existence of autoantibodies was not associated with gastrointestinal symptoms but sustains the presence of a pathophysiological link between bowel inflammation and SpA. Copyright (C) 2004 S.     Tameness of holomorphic closure dimension in a semialgebraic set

    Given a semianalytic set S in a complex space and a point p in S, there is a unique smallest complex-analytic germ at p which contains the germ of S, called the holomorphic closure of S at p. We show that if S is semialgebraic then its holomorphic closure is a Nash germ, for every p, and S admits a semialgebraic filtration by the holomorphic closure dimension. As a consequence, every semialgebraic subset of a complex vector space admits a semialgebraic stratification into CR manifolds satisfying a strong version of the condition of the frontier.Comment: Published versio

    Revision rates after primary hip and knee replacement in England between 2003 and 2006

    <b>Background</b>: Hip and knee replacement are some of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the world. Resurfacing of the hip and unicondylar knee replacement are increasingly being used. There is relatively little evidence on their performance. To study performance of joint replacement in England, we investigated revision rates in the first 3 y after hip or knee replacement according to prosthesis type. <b>Methods and Findings</b>: We linked records of the National Joint Registry for England and Wales and the Hospital Episode Statistics for patients with a primary hip or knee replacement in the National Health Service in England between April 2003 and September 2006. Hospital Episode Statistics records of succeeding admissions were used to identify revisions for any reason. 76,576 patients with a primary hip replacement and 80,697 with a primary knee replacement were included (51% of all primary hip and knee replacements done in the English National Health Service). In hip patients, 3-y revision rates were 0.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.8%–1.1%) with cemented, 2.0% (1.7%–2.3%) with cementless, 1.5% (1.1%–2.0% CI) with “hybrid” prostheses, and 2.6% (2.1%–3.1%) with hip resurfacing (p < 0.0001). Revision rates after hip resurfacing were increased especially in women. In knee patients, 3-y revision rates were 1.4% (1.2%–1.5% CI) with cemented, 1.5% (1.1%–2.1% CI) with cementless, and 2.8% (1.8%–4.5% CI) with unicondylar prostheses (p < 0.0001). Revision rates after knee replacement strongly decreased with age. <b>Interpretation</b>: Overall, about one in 75 patients needed a revision of their prosthesis within 3 y. On the basis of our data, consideration should be given to using hip resurfacing only in male patients and unicondylar knee replacement only in elderly patients

    Constructible motivic functions and motivic integration

    We introduce a direct image formalism for constructible motivic functions. One deduces a very general version of motivic integration for which a change of variables theorem is proved. These constructions are generalized to the relative framework, in which we develop a relative version of motivic integration. These results have been announced in math.AG/0403349 and math.AG/0403350.     An axiomatic approach to the non-linear theory of generalized functions and consistency of Laplace transforms

    We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume, however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theory of distributions.Comment: 23 page

    Gravitational Collapse in Higher Dimensional Husain Space-Time

    We investigate exact solution in higher dimensional Husain model for a null fluid source with pressure pp and density ρ\rho are related by the following relations (i) p=kρp=k\rho, (ii) p=kρB(v)ραp=k\rho-\frac{B(v)}{\rho^{\alpha}} (variable modified Chaplygin) and (iii) p=kραp=k\rho^{\alpha} (polytropic). We have studied the nature of singularity in gravitational collapse for the above equations of state and also for different choices of the of the parameters kk and BB namely, (i) k=0k=0, B=B= constant (generalized Chaplygin), (ii) B=B= constant (modified Chaplygin). It is found that the nature of singularity is independent of these choices of different equation of state except for variable Chaplygin model. Choices of various parameters are shown in tabular form.     GENERAL AND SPECIFIC COMBINING ABILITY IN EARLY MATURING HIGH YIELDING QUALITY PROTEIN MAIZE HYBRIDS

    Fourteen quality protein maize (QPM) hybrids were generated by crossing seven QPM lines with two testers to estimate combining ability effects for yield and yield attributing traits. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the parents and F1 hybrids for all the characters except anthesis silking interval and number of cobs per plant. Combining ability analysis revealed the importance of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of majority of the characters in maize. Thus these crosses can be used directly or exploited for future hybrid breeding programmes to achieve quantum jump in maize improvement. The GCA estimates identified parental lines VIVEK-33 VF2 and NBPGR 32809 as best combiner for grain yield while YHP-Panth and VIVEK-33VF2 were best combiner for earliness. Hence, these parents may be used in hybridization programmes as donors of the superior traits indicated. The best experimental hybrid, on the basis of per se performance and SCA effect for grain yield per plant and its component were observed in VIVEK-33 VF2 × NBPGR 32809, followed by VIVEK- 33 VF2 × NBPGR 31899 and YHP Panth × NBPGR 32809

    Findings in young adults at colonoscopy from a hospital service database audit

    Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosed at <50 years is predominantly located in the distal colon and rectum. Little is known about which lesion subtypes may serve as CRC precursors in young adults. The aim of this work was to document the prevalence and histological subtype of lesions seen in patients aged <50 years, and any associated clinical features. Methods: An audit of the colonoscopy database at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia over a 12-month period was undertaken. Findings were recorded from both colonoscopy reports and corresponding histological examination of excised lesions. Results: Data were extracted from colonoscopies in 2064 patients. Those aged <50 comprised 485 (24%) of the total. CRC precursor lesions (including sessile serrated adenoma/polyps (SSA/P), traditional serrated adenomas, tubular adenomas ≥10 mm or with high-grade dysplasia, and conventional adenomas with villous histology) were seen in 4.3% of patients aged <50 and 12.9% of patients aged ≥50 (P <0.001). Among colonoscopies yielding CRC precursor lesions in patients under 50 years, SSA/P occurred in 52% of procedures (11/21), compared with 27% (55/204) of procedures in patients aged 50 and older (P = 0.02). SSA/P were proximally located in (10/11) 90% of patients aged under 50, and 80% (43/54) of those aged 50 and older (P = 0.46). Conclusions: SSA/P were the most frequently observed CRC precursor lesions in patients aged <50.     Evidence for the Rare Decay B -> K*ll and Measurement of the B -> Kll Branching Fraction

    We present evidence for the flavor-changing neutral current decay BK+B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^- and a measurement of the branching fraction for the related process BK+B\to K\ell^+\ell^-, where +\ell^+\ell^- is either an e+ee^+e^- or μ+μ\mu^+\mu^- pair. These decays are highly suppressed in the Standard Model, and they are sensitive to contributions from new particles in the intermediate state. The data sample comprises 123×106123\times 10^6 Υ(4S)BBˉ\Upsilon(4S)\to B\bar{B} decays collected with the Babar detector at the PEP-II e+ee^+e^- storage ring. Averaging over K()K^{(*)} isospin and lepton flavor, we obtain the branching fractions B(BK+)=(0.650.13+0.14±0.04)×106{\mathcal B}(B\to K\ell^+\ell^-)=(0.65^{+0.14}_{-0.13}\pm 0.04)\times 10^{-6} and B(BK+)=(0.880.29+0.33±0.10)×106{\mathcal B}(B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^-)=(0.88^{+0.33}_{-0.29}\pm 0.10)\times 10^{-6}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The significance of the BK+B\to K\ell^+\ell^- signal is over 8σ8\sigma, while for BK+B\to K^*\ell^+\ell^- it is 3.3σ3.3\sigma.Comment: 7 pages, 2 postscript figues, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    A Postulate for Tiger Recovery: The Case of the Caspian Tiger

    Recent genetic analysis has shown that the extinct Caspian Tiger (P. t. virgata) and the living Amur Tigers (P. t. altaica) of the Russian Far East are actually taxonomically synonymous and that Caspian and Amur groups historically formed a single population, only becoming separated within the last 200 years by human agency. A major conservation implication of this finding is that tigers of Amur stock might be reintroduced, not only back into the Koreas and China as is now proposed, but also through vast areas of Central Asia where the Caspian tiger once lived. However, under the current tiger conservation framework the 12 “Caspian Tiger States” are not fully involved in conservation planning. Equal recognition as “Tiger Range States” should be given to the countries where the Caspian tiger once lived and their involvement in tiger conservation planning encouraged. Today, preliminary ecological surveys show that some sparsely populated areas of Central Asia preserve natural habitat suitable for tigers. In depth assessments should be completed in these and other areas of the Caspian range to evaluate the possibility of tiger reintroductions. Because tigers are a charismatic umbrella species, both ecologically and politically, reintroduction to these landscapes would provide an effective conservation framework for the protection of many species in addition to tigers. And for today’s Amur Tigers this added range will provide a buffer against further loss of genetic diversity, one which will maintain that diversity in the face of selective pressures that can only be experienced in the wild
