    Direct and Indirect Searches for Low-Mass Magnetic Monopoles

    Recently, there has been renewed interest in the search for low-mass magnetic monopoles. At the University of Oklahoma we are performing an experiment (Fermilab E882) using material from the old D0 and CDF detectors to set limits on the existence of Dirac monopoles of masses of the order of 500 GeV. To set such limits, estimates must be made of the production rate of such monopoles at the Tevatron collider, and of the binding strength of any such produced monopoles to matter. Here we sketch the still primitive theory of such interactions, and indicate why we believe a credible limit may still be obtained. On the other hand, there have been proposals that the classic Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian together with duality could be employed to set limits on magnetic monopoles having masses less than 1 TeV, based on virtual, rather than real processes. The D0 collaboration at Fermilab has used such a proposal to set mass limits based on the nonobservation of pairs of photons each with high transverse momentum. We critique the underlying theory, by showing that the cross section violates unitarity at the quoted limits and is unstable with respect to radiative corrections. We therefore believe that no significant limit can be obtained from the current experiments, based on virtual monopole processes.Comment: 20 pages, 1 ps figure, contributed to Kurt Haller's festschrif

    The Effect Of Mesh-Type Bubble Breakers On Two-Phase Vertical Co-Flow

    It is proposed that mesh-type bubble breakers can be used in two-phase gas-liquid vertical cocurrent pipe flow to enhance the heat and mass transfer rates. Two experimental studies were performed to investigate the effect of mesh-type bubble breakers with varying geometries on two-phase flow behaviour. The first used highspeed imaging to measure bubble size and observe the resulting flow regime for two-phase vertical co-flow consisting of air and water. A Froude number correlation that can be used to predict the bubble size generated by mesh-type bubble breakers is proposed. Flow regime maps for two-phase flow in the presence of bubble breakers with varying geometry were produced. The second study investigated two-phase flow heat transfer. A correlation to predict the two-phase Nusselt number (limited to ReSL \u3c 2000 and ReSG \u3c 100) was proposed.     Theoretical and Experimental Status of Magnetic Monopoles

    The Tevatron has inspired new interest in the subject of magnetic monopoles. First there was the 1998 D0 limit on the virtual production of monopoles, based on the theory of Ginzberg and collaborators. In 2000 the first results from an experiment (Fermilab E882) searching for real magnetically charged particles bound to elements from the CDF and D0 detectors were reported. This also required new developments in theory.     Classification Experiences of Para-sport Athletes

    The purpose of this study was to examine the Para sport classification experiences of Canadian high-performance athletes, and how their experiences shaped their embodied perceptions of themselves during classification. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews with five participants. Using interpretive content analysis, the data was analyzed with an embodiment framework. The findings demonstrated that both classification experiences of Para sport athletes, and how athletes constructed their understanding of classification. The results show that athletes accepted the bodily experience of the classification process in different ways; 1) as a necessary pathway to sport, or 2) as a medicalized gaze upon the disabled body. They further reflected on the power imbalances in the experiences where often their own voice was rendered silent. These moments demonstrate disruption to self in embodied experiences. Athlete experiences were shaped by their knowledge surrounding classification, their identity as an individual with disability, and lastly their identity as an athlete. Knowledge from this study offers insights into the embodied experiences and disruptions of Para sport classification. This knowledge may offer insight and shape future classification models and research

    This study documents controversies that have arisen from federally funded art programs and organizations and explores the actions taken by the government and changes made to public policy in the wake of said controversies. These actions include (1) requiring matching funding from other entities, (2) reorganization of programs, changing names of programs, and/or the elimination of programs, (3) oaths/pledges from artists/arts organizations, (4) the denial of funding, (5) the delegation of responsibility/requiring advising panels, and (6) the change or destruction of art. This paper focuses on two federal agencies: the Federal One Program of the Works Progress Administration (1935- 1943) and the National Endowment for the Arts (1965- present). Another example is presented from the General Service Administration’s (GSA) Art-in-Architecture program. The intention of this study is to present federal art funding advocates and policy-makers with information that is useful in the formulation and administration of policy

    Resampling methods for estimating functions with U-statistic structure

    Suppose that inference about parameters of interest is to be based on an unbiased estimating function that is U-statistic of degree 1 or 2. We define suitable studentized versions of such estimating functions and consider asymptotic approximations as well as an estimating function bootstrap (EFB) method based on resampling the estimated terms in the estimating functions. These methods are justified asymptotically and lead to confidence intervals produced directly from the studentized estimating functions. Particular examples in this class of estimating functions arise in La estimation as well as Wilcoxon rank regression and other related estimation problems. The proposed methods are evaluated in examples and simulations and compared with a recent suggestion for inference in such problems which relies on resampling an underlying objective functions with U-statistic structure
