    The influence of Cu7PS6 nanoparticles with the average size 117 nm on the dielectric properties of planar oriented nematic liquid crystal 6CB has been investigated within the frequency range 10(1) ...10(6) Hz and at the temperature 293 K. It has been shown that when changing the concentration of nanoparticles within the range 0 to 1 wt.%, the conductivity of the liquid crystal changes stronger than its dielectric permittivity. It has been shown that the electrical conductivity increases monotonously with increasing the concentration of nanoparticles. However, for this dependence a saturation effect is observed.     Physical structure of the photodissociation regions in NGC 7023: Observations of gas and dust emission with <i>Herschel</i>

    The determination of the physical conditions in molecular clouds is a key step towards our understanding of their formation and evolution of associated star formation. We investigate the density, temperature, and column density of both dust and gas in the photodissociation regions (PDRs) located at the interface between the atomic and cold molecular gas of the NGC 7023 reflection nebula. We study how young stars affect the gas and dust in their environment. Our approach combining both dust and gas delivers strong constraints on the physical conditions of the PDRs. We find dense and warm molecular gas of high column density in the PDRs

    Searching for a link between the magnetic nature and other observed properties of Herbig Ae/Be stars and stars with debris disks

    Among the 21 Herbig Ae/Be stars studied, new detections of a magnetic field were achieved in six stars. For three Herbig Ae/Be stars, we confirm previous magnetic field detections. The largest longitudinal magnetic field, = -454+-42G, was detected in the Herbig Ae/Be star HD101412 using hydrogen lines. No field detection at a significance level of 3sigma was achieved in stars with debris disks. Our study does not indicate any correlation of the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field with disk orientation, disk geometry, or the presence of a companion. We also do not see any simple dependence on the mass-accretion rate. However, it is likely that the range of observed field values qualitatively supports the expectations from magnetospheric accretion models giving support for dipole-like field geometries. Both the magnetic field strength and the X-ray emission show hints for a decline with age in the range of ~2-14Myrs probed by our sample supporting a dynamo mechanism that decays with age. However, our study of rotation does not show any obvious trend of the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field with rotation period. Furthermore, the stars seem to obey the universal power-law relation between magnetic flux and X-ray luminosity established for the Sun and main-sequence active dwarf stars.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in A&

    The origin of hydrogen line emission for five Herbig Ae/Be stars spatially resolved by VLTI/AMBER spectro-interferometry

    To trace the accretion and outflow processes around YSOs, diagnostic spectral lines such as the BrG 2.166 micron line are widely used, although due to a lack of spatial resolution, the origin of the line emission is still unclear. Employing the AU-scale spatial resolution which can be achieved with infrared long-baseline interferometry, we aim to distinguish between theoretical models which associate the BrG line emission with mass infall or mass outflow processes. Using the VLTI/AMBER instrument, we spatially and spectrally (R=1500) resolved the inner environment of five Herbig Ae/Be stars (HD163296, HD104237, HD98922, MWC297, V921Sco) in the BrG emission line as well as in the adjacent continuum. All objects (except MWC297) show an increase of visibility within the BrG emission line, indicating that the BrG-emitting region in these objects is more compact than the dust sublimation radius. For HD98922, our quantitative analysis reveals that the line-emitting region is compact enough to be consistent with the magnetospheric accretion scenario. For HD163296, HD104237, MWC297, and V921Sco we identify a stellar wind or a disk wind as the most likely line-emitting mechanism. We search for general trends and find that the size of the BrG-emitting region does not seem to depend on the basic stellar parameters, but correlates with the H-alpha line profile shape. We find evidence for at least two distinct BrG line-formation mechanisms. Stars with a P-Cygni H-alpha line profile and a high mass-accretion rate seem to show particularly compact BrG-emitting regions (R_BrG/R_cont<0.2), while stars with a double-peaked or single-peaked H-alpha-line profile show a significantly more extended BrG-emitting region (0.6<R_BrG/R_cont<1.4), possibly tracing a stellar wind or a disk wind.Comment: 20 pages; 11 figures; Accepted by A&A; a high quality version of the paper can be obtained at http://www.skraus.eu/papers/kraus.HAeBe-BrGsurvey.pd

    Mid-IR observations of circumstellar disks -- Part III: A mixed sample of PMS stars and Vega-type objects

    We present new mid-infrared spectra for a sample of 15 targets (1 FU Orionis object, 4 Herbig Ae stars, 5 T Tauri stars and 5 Vega type stars), obtained with the TIMMI2 camera at La Silla Observatory (ESO). Three targets are members of the beta Pic moving group (HD 155555, HD 181296 and HD 319139). PAH bands are observed towards the T Tauri star HD 34700 and the Herbig Ae star PDS 144 N. For HD 34700, the band profiles indicate processed PAHs. The spectrum of the Vega-type object eta Corvi (HD 109085), for which a resolved disk at sub-mm wavelengths is known, is entirely stellar between 8--13 micron. Similarly, no indication for circumstellar matter at mid-infrared wavelengths is found towards the Vega-like stars HD 3003, HD 80951, HD 181296 and, surprisingly, the T Tauri system HD 155555. The silicate emission features of the remaining eight sources are modelled with a mixture of silicates of different grain sizes and composition. Unprocessed dust dominates FU Ori, HD 143006 and CD-43 344. Large amorphous grains are the main dust component around HD 190073, HD 319139, KK Oph and PDS 144 S. Both small grains and crystalline dust is found for the Vega-type HD 123356, with a dominance of small amorphous grains. We show that the infrared emission of the binary HD 123356 is dominated by its late-type secondary, but optical spectroscopy is still required to confirm the age of the system and the spectral class of the companion. For most targets this is their first mid-infrared spectroscopic observation. We investigate trends between stellar, disk and silicate properties and confirm correlations of previous studies.     The polarization effects of radiation from magnetized envelopes and extended accretion structures

    The results of numerical calculations of linear polarization from magnetized spherical optically thick and optically thin envelopes are presented. We give the methods how to distinguish magnetized optically thin envelopes from optically thick ones using observed spectral distributions of the polarization degree and the positional angle. The results of numerical calculations are used for analysis of polarimetric observations of OB and WR stars, X-ray binaries with black hole candidates (Cyg X-1, SS 433) and supernovae. The developed method allows to estimate magnetic field strength for the objects mentioned above.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Intraoperative complications in kidney tumor surgery: critical grading for the European Association of Urology intraoperative adverse incident classification

    IntroductionThe European Association of Urology committee in 2020 suggested a new classification, intraoperative adverse incident classification (EAUiaiC), to grade intraoperative adverse events (IAE) in urology.AimsWe applied and validated EAUiaiC, for kidney tumor surgery.Patients and methodsA retrospective multicenter study was conducted based on chart review. The study group comprised 749 radical nephrectomies (RN) and 531 partial nephrectomies (PN) performed in 12 hospitals in Finland during 2016–2017. All IAEs were centrally graded for EAUiaiC. The classification was adapted to kidney tumor surgery by the inclusion of global bleeding as a transfusion of ≥3 units of blood (Grade 2) or as ≥5 units (Grade 3), and also by the exclusion of preemptive conversions.ResultsA total of 110 IAEs were recorded in 13.8% of patients undergoing RN, and 40 IAEs in 6.4% of patients with PN. Overall, bleeding injuries in major vessels, unspecified origin and parenchymal organs accounted for 29.3, 24.0, and 16.0% of all IEAs, respectively. Bowel (n = 10) and ureter (n = 3) injuries were rare. There was no intraoperative mortality. IAEs were associated with increased tumor size, tumor extent, age, comorbidity scores, surgical approach and indication, postoperative Clavien–Dindo (CD) complications and longer stay in hospital. 48% of conversions were reactive with more CD-complications after reactive than preemptive conversion (43 vs. 25%).ConclusionsThe associations between IAEs and preoperative variables and postoperative outcome indicate good construct validity for EAUiaiC. Bleeding is the most important IAE in kidney tumor surgery and the inclusion of transfusions could provide increased objectivity.</p
