iPTF16geu: A multiply imaged, gravitationally lensed type Ia supernova
We report the discovery of a multiply-imaged gravitationally lensed Type Ia
supernova, iPTF16geu (SN 2016geu), at redshift . This phenomenon could
be identified because the light from the stellar explosion was magnified more
than fifty times by the curvature of space around matter in an intervening
galaxy. We used high spatial resolution observations to resolve four images of
the lensed supernova, approximately 0.3" from the center of the foreground
galaxy. The observations probe a physical scale of 1 kiloparsec, smaller
than what is typical in other studies of extragalactic gravitational lensing.
The large magnification and symmetric image configuration implies close
alignment between the line-of-sight to the supernova and the lens. The relative
magnifications of the four images provide evidence for sub-structures in the
lensing galaxy.Comment: Matches published versio
Who Needs Good Neighbours?
Abstract: Due to the increasing spatial dispersion of social networks, the association between neighbor relationships and quality of life has become more uncertain. Our analysis used instrumental variable modelling to reduce bias associated with residual confounding and reverse causation, in order to provide a more reliable examination of the effect of interaction with neighbors on subjective well-being than previous work. While the frames of reference for individuals’ socializing may have shifted outside the neighborhood, our analysis provides robust evidence that interaction with neighbors still matters a great deal for subjective well-being. A further important question to ask is if neighboring does affect well-being, then are there certain groups in society for whom contact with neighbors matters more? Our analysis suggests that there are, namely for those in a relationship, unemployed or retired. This means that while fostering contact with neighbors has the potential to significantly improve individual well-being, such policy efforts are likely to matter a good deal more in neighborhoods with relatively large numbers of geographically constrained social groups, such as the elderly and the unemployed. Quark masses and mixings in the RS1 model with a condensing 4th generation
We study the hierarchy of quark masses and mixings in a model based on a
5-dimensional spacetime with constant curvature of Randall-Sundrum type with
two branes, where the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking is caused dynamically by
the condensation of a 4th generation of quarks, due to underlying physics from
the 5D bulk and the first KK gluons. We first study the hierarchy of quark
masses and mixings that can be obtained from purely adjusting the profile
localizations, finding that realistic masses are not reproduced unless non
trivial hierarchies of underlying 4-fermion interactions from the bulk are
included. Then we study global U(1) symmetries that can be imposed in order to
obtain non-symmetric modified Fritzsch-like textures in the mass matrices that
reproduce reasonably well quark masses and CKM mixings.Comment: Minor changes. Version accepted for publication in JHE
Data-Driven Key Performance Indicators and Datasets for Building Energy Flexibility: A Review and Perspectives
Energy flexibility, through short-term demand-side management (DSM) and
energy storage technologies, is now seen as a major key to balancing the
fluctuating supply in different energy grids with the energy demand of
buildings. This is especially important when considering the intermittent
nature of ever-growing renewable energy production, as well as the increasing
dynamics of electricity demand in buildings. This paper provides a holistic
review of (1) data-driven energy flexibility key performance indicators (KPIs)
for buildings in the operational phase and (2) open datasets that can be used
for testing energy flexibility KPIs. The review identifies a total of 81
data-driven KPIs from 91 recent publications. These KPIs were categorized and
analyzed according to their type, complexity, scope, key stakeholders, data
requirement, baseline requirement, resolution, and popularity. Moreover, 330
building datasets were collected and evaluated. Of those, 16 were deemed
adequate to feature building performing demand response or building-to-grid
(B2G) services. The DSM strategy, building scope, grid type, control strategy,
needed data features, and usability of these selected 16 datasets were
analyzed. This review reveals future opportunities to address limitations in
the existing literature: (1) developing new data-driven methodologies to
specifically evaluate different energy flexibility strategies and B2G services
of existing buildings; (2) developing baseline-free KPIs that could be
calculated from easily accessible building sensors and meter data; (3) devoting
non-engineering efforts to promote building energy flexibility, such as
designing utility programs, standardizing energy flexibility quantification and
verification processes; and (4) curating datasets with proper description for

Data-Driven Key Performance Indicators and Datasets for Building Energy Flexibility: A Review and Perspectives
Pattern and process in Amazon tree turnover, 1976-2001
Previous work has shown that tree turnover, tree biomass and large liana densities have increased in mature tropical forest plots in the late twentieth century. These results point to a concerted shift in forest ecological processes that may already be having significant impacts on terrestrial carbon stocks, fluxes and biodiversity. However, the findings have proved controversial, partly because a rather limited number of permanent plots have been monitored for rather short periods. The aim of this paper is to characterize regional-scale patterns of 'tree turnover' (the rate with which trees die and recruit into a population) by using improved datasets now available for Amazonia that span the past 25 years. Specifically, we assess whether concerted changes in turnover are occurring, and if so whether they are general throughout the Amazon or restricted to one region or environmental zone. In addition, we ask whether they are driven by changes in recruitment, mortality or both. We find that: (i) trees 10 cm or more in diameter recruit and die twice as fast on the richer soils of southern and western Amazonia than on the poorer soils of eastern and central Amazonia; (ii) turnover rates have increased throughout Amazonia over the past two decades; (iii) mortality and recruitment rates have both increased significantly in every region and environmental zone, with the exception of mortality in eastern Amazonia; (iv) recruitment rates have consistently exceeded mortality rates; (v) absolute increases in recruitment and mortality rates are greatest in western Amazonian sites; and (vi) mortality appears to be lagging recruitment at regional scales. These spatial patterns and temporal trends are not caused by obvious artefacts in the data or the analyses. The trends cannot be directly driven by a mortality driver (such as increased drought or fragmentation-related death) because the biomass in these forests has simultaneously increased. Our findings therefore indicate that long-acting and widespread environmental changes are stimulating the growth and productivity of Amazon forests
Exclusive Leptoproduction of rho^0 Mesons from Hydrogen at Intermediate Virtual Photon Energies
Measurements of the cross section for exclusive virtual-photoproduction of
rho^0 mesons from hydrogen are reported. The data were collected by the HERMES
experiment using 27.5 GeV positrons incident on a hydrogen gas target in the
HERA storage ring. The invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system ranges
from 4.0 to 6.0 GeV, while the negative squared four-momentum Q^2 of the
virtual photon varies from 0.7 to 5.0 GeV^2. The present data together with
most of the previous data at W > 4 GeV are well described by a model that
infers the W-dependence of the cross section from the dependence on the Bjorken
scaling variable x of the unpolarized structure function for deep-inelastic
scattering. In addition, a model calculation based on Off-Forward Parton
Distributions gives a fairly good account of the longitudinal component of the

ENIGMA and global neuroscience: A decade of large-scale studies of the brain in health and disease across more than 40 countries
This review summarizes the last decade of work by the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta Analysis) Consortium, a global alliance of over 1400 scientists across 43 countries, studying the human brain in health and disease. Building on large-scale genetic studies that discovered the first robustly replicated genetic loci associated with brain metrics, ENIGMA has diversified into over 50 working groups (WGs), pooling worldwide data and expertise to answer fundamental questions in neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, and genetics. Most ENIGMA WGs focus on specific psychiatric and neurological conditions, other WGs study normal variation due to sex and gender differences, or development and aging; still other WGs develop methodological pipelines and tools to facilitate harmonized analyses of "big data" (i.e., genetic and epigenetic data, multimodal MRI, and electroencephalography data). These international efforts have yielded the largest neuroimaging studies to date in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. More recent ENIGMA WGs have formed to study anxiety disorders, suicidal thoughts and behavior, sleep and insomnia, eating disorders, irritability, brain injury, antisocial personality and conduct disorder, and dissociative identity disorder. Here, we summarize the first decade of ENIGMA's activities and ongoing projects, and describe the successes and challenges encountered along the way. We highlight the advantages of collaborative large-scale coordinated data analyses for testing reproducibility and robustness of findings, offering the opportunity to identify brain systems involved in clinical syndromes across diverse samples and associated genetic, environmental, demographic, cognitive, and psychosocial factors
Action potentials in abscisic acid-deficient tomato mutant generated spontaneously and evoked by electrical stimulation
Action potentials generated spontaneously (SAPs) and evoked by electrical stimulation (APs) in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cv. Micro-Tom ABA-deficient mutants (sitiens—MTsit) and its wild type (MTwt) were characterized by continuous monitoring of electrical activity for 66 h and by application of an electrical stimulation supplied extracellularly. MTsit generated SAPs which spread along the stem, including petioles and roots with an amplitude of 44.6 ± 4.4 mV, half-time (t½) of 33.1 ± 2.9 s and velocity of 5.4 ± 1.0 cm min−1. Amplitude and velocity were 43 and 108 % higher in MTsit than in MTwt, respectively. The largest number of SAPs was registered in the early morning in both genotypes. MTsit was less responsive to electrical stimuli. The excitation threshold and the refractory period were greater in MTsit than in MTwt. After current application, APs were generated in the MTwt with 21.2 ± 2.4 mV amplitude and propagated with 5.6 ± 0.5 cm min−1 velocity. Lower intensity stimuli did not trigger APs in these plants. In MTsit APs were measured with amplitude of 26.8 ± 4.8 mV and propagated with velocity of 8.5 ± 0.1 cm min−1
