Synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles via sucrose ester micelle-mediated hydrothermal processing route
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized via low-temperature sucrose ester micelle-mediated hydrothermal processing route using titanium isopropoxide as the precursor. X-ray diffractometer revealed that the samples possessed a mixed crystalline phases consisting of anatase and brookite in which anatase was the main phase. Upon increasing the hydrothermal reaction temperature, the degree of crystallinity of the nanoparticles improved and their morphology transformed from bundles of needles to rods and to spheres. Photocatalytic behaviour of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was investigated by photodegradation of methylene blue solution in an ultraviolet A irradiating photoreactor. The as-synthesized nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic performance as compared to the commercial counterpart
PPARs and Tumor Microenvironment: The Emerging Roles of the Metabolic Master Regulators in Tumor Stromal-Epithelial Crosstalk and Carcinogenesis.
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) have been extensively studied for more than three decades. Consisting of three isotypes, PPARα, γ, and β/δ, these nuclear receptors are regarded as the master metabolic regulators which govern many aspects of the body energy homeostasis and cell fate. Their roles in malignancy are also increasingly recognized. With the growing interest in crosstalk between tumor stroma and epithelium, this review aims to highlight the current knowledge on the implications of PPARs in the tumor microenvironment. PPARγ plays a crucial role in the metabolic reprogramming of cancer-associated fibroblasts and adipocytes, coercing the two stromal cells to become substrate donors for cancer growth. Fibroblast PPARβ/δ can modify the risk of tumor initiation and cancer susceptibility. In endothelial cells, PPARβ/δ and PPARα are pro- and anti-angiogenic, respectively. Although the angiogenic role of PPARγ remains ambiguous, it is a crucial regulator in autocrine and paracrine signaling of cancer-associated fibroblasts and tumor-associated macrophages/immune cells. Of note, angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4), a secretory protein encoded by a target gene of PPARs, triggers critical oncogenic processes such as inflammatory signaling, extracellular matrix derangement, anoikis resistance and metastasis, making it a potential drug target for cancer treatment. To conclude, PPARs in the tumor microenvironment exhibit oncogenic activities which are highly controversial and dependent on many factors such as stromal cell types, cancer types, and oncogenesis stages. Thus, the success of PPAR-based anticancer treatment potentially relies on innovative strategies to modulate PPAR activity in a cell type-specific manner

Superposition effect and clan structure in forward-backward multiplicity correlations
The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the link between
forward-backward multiplicity correlations properties and the shape of the
corresponding final charged particle multiplicity distribution in various
classes of events in different collisions. It is shown that the same mechanism
which explains the shoulder effect and the H_n vs. n oscillations in charged
particle multiplicity distributions, i.e., the weighted superposition of
different classes of events with negative binomial properties, reproduces
within experimental errors also the forward-backward multiplicity correlation
strength in e+e- annihilation at LEP energy and allows interesting predictions
for pp collisions in the TeV energy region, to be tested at LHC, for instance
with the ALICE detector. We limit ourselves at present to study substructures
properties in hadron-hadron collisions and e+e- annihilation; they are examined
as ancillary examples in the conviction that their understanding might be
relevant also in other more complex cases.Comment: 16 page
A possible minimal gauge-Higgs unification
A possible minimal model of the gauge-Higgs unification based on the higher
dimensional spacetime M^4 X (S^1/Z_2) and the bulk gauge symmetry SU(3)_C X
SU(3)_W X U(1)_X is constructed in some details. We argue that the Weinberg
angle and the electromagnetic current can be correctly identified if one
introduces the extra U(1)_X above and a bulk scalar triplet. The VEV of this
scalar as well as the orbifold boundary conditions will break the bulk gauge
symmetry down to that of the standard model. A new neutral zero-mode gauge
boson Z' exists that gains mass via this VEV. We propose a simple fermion
content that is free from all the anomalies when the extra brane-localized
chiral fermions are taken into account as well. The issues on recovering a
standard model chiral-fermion spectrum with the masses and flavor mixing are
also discussed, where we need to introduce the two other brane scalars which
also contribute to the Z' mass in the similar way as the scalar triplet. The
neutrinos can get small masses via a type I seesaw mechanism. In this model,
the mass of the Z' boson and the compactification scale are very constrained as
respectively given in the ranges: 2.7 TeV < m_Z' < 13.6 TeV and 40 TeV < 1/R <
200 TeV.Comment: 20 pages, revised versio

Search for lepton-flavor violation at HERA
A search for lepton-flavor-violating interactions and has been performed with the ZEUS detector using the entire HERA I
data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 pb^{-1}. The data
were taken at center-of-mass energies, , of 300 and 318 GeV. No
evidence of lepton-flavor violation was found, and constraints were derived on
leptoquarks (LQs) that could mediate such interactions. For LQ masses below
, limits were set on , where
is the coupling of the LQ to an electron and a
first-generation quark , and is the branching ratio of
the LQ to the final-state lepton ( or ) and a quark . For
LQ masses much larger than , limits were set on the four-fermion
interaction term for LQs that couple to an electron and a quark
and to a lepton and a quark , where and are
quark generation indices. Some of the limits are also applicable to
lepton-flavor-violating processes mediated by squarks in -Parity-violating
supersymmetric models. In some cases, especially when a higher-generation quark
is involved and for the process , the ZEUS limits are the most
stringent to date.Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, Accepted by EPJC. References and 1 figure (Fig.

Multijet production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA and determination of alpha_s
Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have
been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 < Q2 < 5000 GeV2.
The data were taken at the ep collider HERA with centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s)
= 318 GeV using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of
82.2 pb-1. Jets were identified in the Breit frame using the k_T cluster
algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of
differential dijet and trijet cross sections are presented as functions of jet
transverse energy E_{T,B}{jet}, pseudorapidity eta_{LAB}{jet} and Q2 with
E_{T,B}{jet} > 5 GeV and -1 < eta_{LAB}{jet} < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD
calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant
alpha_s(M_Z), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections,
is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1179 pm 0.0013(stat.) {+0.0028}_{-0.0046}(exp.)

Constitutive expression and distinct properties of IFN-epsilon protect the female reproductive tract from Zika virus infection
The immunological surveillance factors controlling vulnerability of the female reproductive tract (FRT) to sexually transmitted viral infections are not well understood. Interferon-epsilon (IFNε) is a distinct, immunoregulatory type-I IFN that is constitutively expressed by FRT epithelium and is not induced by pathogens like other antiviral IFNs α, β and λ. We show the necessity of IFNε for Zika Virus (ZIKV) protection by: increased susceptibility of IFNε -/- mice; their “rescue” by intravaginal recombinant IFNε treatment and blockade of protective endogenous IFNε by neutralising antibody. Complementary studies in human FRT cell lines showed IFNε had potent anti-ZIKV activity, associated with transcriptome responses similar to IFNλ but lacking the proinflammatory gene signature of IFNα. IFNε activated STAT1/2 pathways similar to IFNα and λ that were inhibited by ZIKV-encoded non-structural (NS) proteins, but not if IFNε exposure preceded infection. This scenario is provided by the constitutive expression of endogenous IFNε. However, the IFNε expression was not inhibited by ZIKV NS proteins despite their ability to antagonise the expression of IFNβ or λ. Thus, the constitutive expression of IFNε provides cellular resistance to viral strategies of antagonism and maximises the antiviral activity of the FRT. These results show that the unique spatiotemporal properties of IFNε provides an innate immune surveillance network in the FRT that is a significant barrier to viral infection with important implications for prevention and therapy.Rosa C. Photoproduction of mesons associated with a leading neutron
The photoproduction of mesons associated with a leading
neutron has been observed with the ZEUS detector in collisions at HERA
using an integrated luminosity of 80 pb. The neutron carries a large
fraction, {}, of the incoming proton beam energy and is detected at
very small production angles, { mrad}, an indication of
peripheral scattering. The meson is centrally produced with
pseudorapidity {
GeV}, which is large compared to the average transverse momentum of the neutron
of 0.22 GeV. The ratio of neutron-tagged to inclusive production is
in the photon-proton
center-of-mass energy range { GeV}. The data suggest that the
presence of a hard scale enhances the fraction of events with a leading neutron
in the final state.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
