Probabilistic Simulation of Multi-Scale Composite Behavior
A methodology is developed to computationally assess the non-deterministic composite response at all composite scales (from micro to structural) due to the uncertainties in the constituent (fiber and matrix) properties, in the fabrication process and in structural variables (primitive variables). The methodology is computationally efficient for simulating the probability distributions of composite behavior, such as material properties, laminate and structural responses. Bi-products of the methodology are probabilistic sensitivities of the composite primitive variables. The methodology has been implemented into the computer codes PICAN (Probabilistic Integrated Composite ANalyzer) and IPACS (Integrated Probabilistic Assessment of Composite Structures). The accuracy and efficiency of this methodology are demonstrated by simulating the uncertainties in composite typical laminates and comparing the results with the Monte Carlo simulation method. Available experimental data of composite laminate behavior at all scales fall within the scatters predicted by PICAN. Multi-scaling is extended to simulate probabilistic thermo-mechanical fatigue and to simulate the probabilistic design of a composite redome in order to illustrate its versatility. Results show that probabilistic fatigue can be simulated for different temperature amplitudes and for different cyclic stress magnitudes. Results also show that laminate configurations can be selected to increase the redome reliability by several orders of magnitude without increasing the laminate thickness--a unique feature of structural composites. Vibrations and Berry Phases of Charged Buckminsterfullerene
A simple model of electron-vibron interactions in buckminsterfullerene ions
is solved semiclassically. Electronic degeneracies of C induce
dynamical Jahn-Teller distortions, which are unimodal for and
bimodal for . The quantization of motion along the Jahn-Teller
manifold leads to a symmetric-top rotator Hamiltonian. I find Molecular
Aharonov-Bohm effects where electronic Berry phases determine the vibrational
spectra, zero point fluctuations, and electrons' pair binding energies. The
latter are relevant to superconductivity in alkali-fullerenes.Comment: Latex 11 pages. IIT-00
The Perplexing Problem of Persistently PCR-Positive Personnel
Early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published return-to-work criteria for healthcare personnel who had recovered from severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. These criteria were most recently updated on April 3, 2020.1 The CDC has endorsed 2 different approaches to allow staff to return to work: a symptom or time-based strategy and a test-based strategy. Many institutions initially adopted the test-based strategy, in part because CDC initially recommended it as the preferred option (but no longer does so) and, in part, because it seemed the more definitive or conservative of the 2 CDC options
Superconductivity in Fullerides
Experimental studies of superconductivity properties of fullerides are
briefly reviewed. Theoretical calculations of the electron-phonon coupling, in
particular for the intramolecular phonons, are discussed extensively. The
calculations are compared with coupling constants deduced from a number of
different experimental techniques. It is discussed why the A_3 C_60 are not
Mott-Hubbard insulators, in spite of the large Coulomb interaction. Estimates
of the Coulomb pseudopotential , describing the effect of the Coulomb
repulsion on the superconductivity, as well as possible electronic mechanisms
for the superconductivity are reviewed. The calculation of various properties
within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory and attempts to go beyond this theory are
described.Comment: 33 pages, latex2e, revtex using rmp style, 15 figures, submitted to

A consensus guide to capturing the ability to inhibit actions and impulsive behaviors in the stop-signal task
Multisociety Statement on COVID-19 Vaccination as a Condition of Employment for Healthcare Personnel
This consensus statement by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA), The Association for Professionals in Epidemiology and Infection Control (APIC), the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists (SIDP), recommends that COVID-19 vaccination should be a condition of employment for all healthcare personnel. Exemptions from this policy apply to those with medical contraindications to all COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States and other exemptions as specified by federal or state law. The consensus statement also supports COVID-19 vaccination of non-employees functioning at a healthcare facility (for example, students, contract workers, volunteers, etc.)
Evaluation of sesamum gum as an excipient in matrix tablets
In developing countries modern medicines are often beyond the affordability of the majority of the population. This is due to the reliance on expensive imported raw materials despite the abundance of natural resources which could provide an equivalent or even an improved function. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of sesamum gum (SG) extracted from the leaves of Sesamum radiatum (readily cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa) as a matrix former. Directly compressed matrix tablets were prepared from the extract and compared with similar matrices of HPMC (K4M) using theophylline as a model water soluble drug. The compaction, swelling, erosion and drug release from the matrices were studied in deionized water, 0.1 N HCl (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer (pH 6.8) using USP apparatus II. The data from the swelling, erosion and drug release studies were also fitted into the respective mathematical models. Results showed that the matrices underwent a combination of swelling and erosion, with the swelling action being controlled by the rate of hydration in the medium. SG also controlled the release of theophylline similar to the HPMC and therefore may have use as an alternative excipient in regions where Sesamum radiatum can be easily cultivated
Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018
Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results demonstrate widespread moderate improvements in overall anemia prevalence but identify only three LMICs with a high probability of achieving the WHO GNT by 2030 at a national scale, and no LMIC is expected to achieve the target in all their subnational administrative units. Our maps show where large within-country disparities occur, as well as areas likely to fall short of the WHO GNT, offering precision public health tools so that adequate resource allocation and subsequent interventions can be targeted to the most vulnerable populations.Peer reviewe
