Wedge test data for three new explosives: LAX112, 2,4-DNI, and TNAZ
High pressure Pop-plots and inert Hugoniot curves have been measured for three new explosives: LAX112 (3,6-diamino-1,2,4,5-tetrazine-1,4-dioxide), 2,4-DNI (2,4-dinitroimidazole), and TNAZ (1,3,3-trinitroazetidine). LAX112 and 2,4-DNI are of interest because of their insensitivity, while TNAZ is useful for its performance and castability. The shock sensitivity of LAX112 and 2,4-DNI fall between that of pressed TNT and PBX9502, LAX112 being the less sensitive. The shock sensitivity of TNAZ falls between that of pressed PETN and PBX9501. The Pop-plot and Hugoniot data for TNAZ matches well with the lower pressure gas-gun data of Sheffield, Gustavsen, and Alcon. The inert Hugoniots for all three materials are comparable to those of other explosives

Policy relevant results from an expert elicitation on the health risks of phthalates
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The EU 6th Framework Program (FP)-funded Health and Environment Network (HENVINET) aimed to support informed policy making by facilitating the availability of relevant knowledge on different environmental health issues. An approach was developed by which scientific agreement, disagreement, and knowledge gaps could be efficiently identified, and expert advice prepared in a way that is usable for policy makers. There were two aims of the project: 1) to apply the tool to a relevant issue; the potential health impacts of the widely used plasticizers, phthalates, and 2) to evaluate the method and the tool by asking both scientific experts and the target audience, namely policy makers and stakeholders, for their opinions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The tool consisted of an expert consultation in several steps on the issue of phthalates in environmental health. A diagram depicting the cause-effect chain, from the production and use of phthalates to potential health impacts, was prepared based on existing reviews. This was used as a basis for an online questionnaire, through which experts in the field were consulted. The results of this first round of consultation laid the foundation for a new questionnaire answered by an expert panel that, subsequently, also discussed approaches and results in a workshop. One major task of the expert panel was to pinpoint priorities from the cause-effect chain according to their impact on the extent of potential health risks and their relevance for reducing uncertainty. The results were condensed into a policy brief that was sent to policy makers and stakeholders for their evaluation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The experts agreed about the substantial knowledge gaps within the field of phthalates. The top three priorities for further research and policy action were: 1) intrauterine exposure, 2) reproductive toxicology, and 3) exposure from medical devices. Although not all relevant information from the cause-effect chain is known for phthalates, most experts thought that there are enough indications to justify a precautionary approach and to restrict their general use. Although some of the experts expressed some scepticism about such a tool, most felt that important issues were highlighted.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The approach used was an efficient way at summarising priority knowledge gaps as a starting point for health risk assessment of compounds, based on their relevance for the risk assessment outcome. We conclude that this approach is useful for supporting policy makers with state-of-the-art scientific knowledge weighed by experts. The method can assist future evidence-based policy making.</p
Policy relevant Results from an Expert Elicitation on the Human Health Risks of Decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) and Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)
Aim: Apply a recently developed expert elicitation procedure to evaluate the state of the current knowledge of the two brominated flame retardants (BFRs) most commonly used today; decabromo-diphenyl ether (decaBDE) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and their potential impact on human health in order to support policy considerations. This expert elicitation was organized by the HENVINET (Health and Environment Network) Consortium. Method: The HENVINET expert elicitation procedure that was used in the evaluations of decaBDE and HBCD is a rapid assessment tool aimed at highlighting areas of agreement and areas of disagreement on knowledge-related key issues for environment and health policy decision making. Results: The outcome of the expert consultation on BFRs was concrete expert advice for policy makers with specific priorities for further action made clear for both stakeholders and policy makers. The experts were not in agreement whether or not the knowledge currently available on decaBDE or HBCD is sufficient to justify policy actions, but most experts considered that enough data already exists to support a ban or restriction on the use of these compounds. All experts agreed on the necessity of more research on the compounds. Wideband 67-116 GHz cryogenic receiver development for ALMA Band 2
The Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) is already
revolutionising our understanding of the Universe. However, ALMA is not yet
equipped with all of its originally planned receiver bands, which will allow it
to observe over the full range of frequencies from 35-950 GHz accessible
through the Earth's atmosphere. In particular Band 2 (67-90 GHz) has not yet
been approved for construction. Recent technological developments in cryogenic
monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) high electron mobility
transistor (HEMT) amplifier and orthomode transducer (OMT) design provide an
opportunity to extend the originally planned on-sky bandwidth, combining ALMA
Bands 2 and 3 into one receiver cartridge covering 67-116 GHz.
The IF band definition for the ALMA project took place two decades ago, when
8 GHz of on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel was an ambitious goal. The
new receiver design we present here allows the opportunity to expand ALMA's
wideband capabilities, anticipating future upgrades across the entire
observatory. Expanding ALMA's instantaneous bandwidth is a high priority, and
provides a number of observational advantages, including lower noise in
continuum observations, the ability to probe larger portions of an astronomical
spectrum for, e.g., widely spaced molecular transitions, and the ability to
scan efficiently in frequency space to perform surveys where the redshift or
chemical complexity of the object is not known a priori. Wider IF bandwidth
also reduces uncertainties in calibration and continuum subtraction that might
otherwise compromise science objectives.
Here we provide an overview of the component development and overall design
for this wideband 67-116 GHz cryogenic receiver cartridge, designed to operate
from the Band 2 receiver cartridge slot in the current ALMA front end receiver

Re-emergence of enterovirus D68 in Europe after easing the COVID-19 lockdown, September 2021
We report a rapid increase in enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infections, with 139 cases reported from eight European countries between 31 July and 14 October 2021. This upsurge is in line with the seasonality of EV-D68 and was presumably stimulated by the widespread reopening after COVID-19 lockdown. Most cases were identified in September, but more are to be expected in the coming months. Reinforcement of clinical awareness, diagnostic capacities and surveillance of EV-D68 is urgently needed in Europe.Peer Reviewe
Toward visualization of nanomachines in their native cellular environment
The cellular nanocosm is made up of numerous types of macromolecular complexes or biological nanomachines. These form functional modules that are organized into complex subcellular networks. Information on the ultra-structure of these nanomachines has mainly been obtained by analyzing isolated structures, using imaging techniques such as X-ray crystallography, NMR, or single particle electron microscopy (EM). Yet there is a strong need to image biological complexes in a native state and within a cellular environment, in order to gain a better understanding of their functions. Emerging methods in EM are now making this goal reachable. Cryo-electron tomography bypasses the need for conventional fixatives, dehydration and stains, so that a close-to-native environment is retained. As this technique is approaching macromolecular resolution, it is possible to create maps of individual macromolecular complexes. X-ray and NMR data can be ‘docked’ or fitted into the lower resolution particle density maps to create a macromolecular atlas of the cell under normal and pathological conditions. The majority of cells, however, are too thick to be imaged in an intact state and therefore methods such as ‘high pressure freezing’ with ‘freeze-substitution followed by room temperature plastic sectioning’ or ‘cryo-sectioning of unperturbed vitreous fully hydrated samples’ have been introduced for electron tomography. Here, we review methodological considerations for visualizing nanomachines in a close-to-physiological, cellular context. EM is in a renaissance, and further innovations and training in this field should be fully supported
